Booking a museum ticket this past summer was not easy. Visitors often found that tickets for the following week had been fully booked. Across China, museum halls were filled with visitors during the summer vacation. To many museums, such crowds had not often been seen before. So, what was behind this “museum craze (狂热)”?
Part of the reason is a growing interest in traditional Chinese culture, according to Guo Sike, leader of the Confucius Museum in Shandong province.
“Nowadays, young Chinese love traditional Chinese culture,” said Guo. He added that modern technologies have also played a role. They allow people to experience traditional culture in more ways.
The Shaanxi History Museum in the city of Xi’an also saw an increase in visitors. The museum can only allow 12,000 people to visit each day. Its ticket booking app, however, received more than 600,000 clicks a day. To solve the problem, the museum called off its Monday rest. It was also open for more hours on Sundays.
Popular study tours also helped bring more people to museums. The Confucius Museum saw many of these tours. In Xi’an, the Qinqiang Opera was a popular subject of study tours. Local museums offered chances to learn the culture.
“Museums are bridges. They connect the past, present and future,” said Yang Chaoming, a professor at Shandong University. “More and more people wish to better learn about traditional Chinese culture through museum visits.”

(A) In the past 20 years, astronauts have done nearly 3,000 scientific experiments (实验) aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Many breakthroughs (突破) have been made, including research on drugs for Alzheimer’s disease (老年痴呆症) and cancer (癌症), and the effects of living in space on the human body. There was a time when China had little chance to do such research. Now China can.
On July 24, Wentian (问天), the first space lab (实验室) of China’s space station, blasted off. (B) It later docked (对接) with the Tianhe core module (天和核心舱), reported China Daily.
Wentian will be mainly used for studying space life sciences. Astronauts will use fruit flies, zebra fish (斑马鱼), thale cress (拟南芥) and other animals and plants to study how they grow and age in space. Experiments on cells (细胞) and organs (器官) in weightless conditions will also be done. These studies “could pave the way for humans to live in space and the future treatment of diseases in space”, said Zhao Liping, chief designer of the Wentian Space Application System.
The lab is open to scientists from other countries, too. Canadian cancer scientist Tricia Larose posted on Twitter that she would “happily” travel to the Tiangong space station to do research. Larose’s project of “tumors (肿瘤) in space” was chosen as one of nine projects to be carried out in Wentian. It was chosen by the United Nations and China from 42 applicants (申请者) from 27 countries.
Her project tries to study if tumor growth could slow or stop in weightless conditions and how space radiation (辐射) (C) affects our DNA.
