1 . No one is born a winner. People make themselves into winners by their own experience. I learned this lesson from an experience many years ago. I took the head coaching job at a school in Baxley, Georgia. It was a small school with a weak football program.

It was a tradition for the school's old team to play against the new team at the end of spring practice. The old team had no coach, and they didn't even practice to prepare for the game. Being the coach of the new team, I was excited because I knew we were going to win, but to my disappointment we were defeated. I couldn't believe I had got into such a situation. Thinking hard about it, I came to realize that my team might not be the number one team in Georgia, but they were depending on me. ________

I started doing anything I could to help them build a little confidence. Most importantly, I began to treat them like winners. That summer, when the other teams enjoyed their vacations, we met every day and practiced passing and kicking the football.

Six months after suffering our failure on the spring practice field, we won our first game and our second, and continued to improve. In the end, we faced the number one team in the state. I felt that it would be a victory for us even if we lost the game. But that wasn't what happened. My boys beat the best team in Georgia, giving me one of the greatest excitements of my life.

From the experience, I learned a lot about how attitude(态度)of the leader can influence the members of a team. Instead of seeing my boys as losers, I pushed and encouraged them. I helped them to see themselves differently, and they built themselves into winners.

Food came from all our neighbors to show that they were worried about him, too. A friend of mine said to me, “How I wish my grandfather was alive. You’re lucky to have him there.”

4 . Several years ago, Ed’s teacher asked him to take part in a volunteer activity. It brought normal children and disabled children together. Each week Ed spent an hour in the special school helping the disabled children with their schoolwork, games and eating. Ed’s mother was a teacher, so he often met a lot of children. At first, Ed thought it would be scary to be with children who were so different, but later he found there was something special with those children.

Every Wednesday, Tom, Susan and Anna couldn’t wait to see Ed. Tom had to sit on the wheelchair. He was only able to say some simple words like yes or no. Susan, a deaf girl, always welcomed Ed with a big smile. As for Anna she was born with an illness, and it made her really small for her age. 5 . A school bus is used to take children to and from school. In the USA, about 350, 000 school buses take more than 25 million children to and from school. Yellow became the color of school buses in the USA in 1939. Dr. Frank got the good idea. He said it was easy for people to see yellow buses and the black letters on them in early morning or late afternoon. That would make children safer.

There are not many school buses in Britain, and they are not yellow. They have trackers(追踪器)on them. The trackers let parents know where the school bus is and whether their kids are on the bus.

Kindergarten(幼儿园)is a difficult time for some kids. It’s the first time for them to go away from their parents. To make kids love their school, Japanese kindergartens and schools have colorful buses. The buses can easily make children want to take them--and then, go to school. Even some parents want to take them too!

6 . New York is a very large city with 8 million people. How do so many people move about the city on their way to work and school? So, we should know something about its transportation.

8 . Reading can be a social activity. Think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now, the website BookCrossing.com turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group.

Members go on the site and register (注册) the books they own and would like to share. BookCrossing provides an identification number (标识号) to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure (冒险), traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.

Bruce Pederson, the managing director of BookCrossing, says, "The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read. BookCrossing brings them together."

Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.

People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. E-mails are then sent to the BookCrossers to keep them updated (更新) about where their books have been found. Bruce Pederson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.

BookCrossing is popular with people who want to get back to the "real" and not the virtual (虚拟). The site now has more than one million members in more than one hundred and thirty-five countries.

9 . Perhaps you've seen the English letters "WC" in your city. They show public toilets. But do you know it is far from elegant English? In fact, foreigners from English-speaking countries rarely use the letters.

Workers in our city are changing "WC" signs all over the city. The government is spending much money changing all the bad English on signs and restaurant menus. Many other places in China are following our steps.

"WC, or water closet, is old-fashioned English. It sounds dirty to me, " says Charlie Shifflet, a young man from the US. The old sign will become "Gents/Men" and "Ladies/ Women".

"I see lots of poor English in everyday life, and not only on signs, " he says. "I know what they mean. But they are Chinglish, not real English. For example, when someone says to me ‘My hometown is Henan Province’, I know he would say: ‘My hometown is in Henan Province’. ‘Hometown’ is a smaller place in a province.” The common mistakes he picked up include "Not Entry", which should be "No Entry", "Direction of Airport" should be changed to "To the Airport". And it is "room rate", not "room price". And remember to "Keep off the grass", rather than "Care of the green".

1. What is not true about "WC"?
A.It is not elegant English.B.It stands for water closet.
C.It is old-fashioned English.D.It is often used in the USA.
2. Which of the following is real English according to Charlie Shifflet?
