A new term means a new start. What do you like to do to welcome the beginning of your new study life? | |
David | I do a special thing on the first day of every term. On the night before, I use a piece of paper and coloured pens to make a “first day of school” sign. I draw pictures on it. The next day, I take a picture with the sign in front of the school. To me, this is a meaningful way to welcome the beginning of a new term. |
Mary | At the beginning of the school year, I will write down some words about study and life. For example, now as a freshman in middle school, I write “Dreams big and work hard” on a piece of white paper. After finishing all these, I will put up this piece of paper on the wall by my bed. Whenever I look at it when I’m tired, it can encourage me to learn. |
Mike | The most important thing to do at the start of the new term is to look back at the happy memories (记忆) of the summer holiday. I’ll turn on the camera and open my notebook the night before the new term starts. |
Susan | I will have a haircut at the beginning of a new term. The day before I go to school, I’ll go to the barber shop (理发店) near my neighbourhood by myself. I feel really relaxed and have fun during the haircut. After I get a new hairstyle, I feel like everything is new from now on. |

4 . Teachers help us be good students and people. So we should thank them for their hard work. In China, we have Teachers' Day on Sept 10th. On that day, we say thanks to our teachers and sometimes give them small gifts. But how do US students thank their teachers? US schools have a whole week in May to appreciate their teachers! Teacher Appreciate Day is on Tuesday of that week. They have parties with gifts and snacks that week. There are also signs everywhere to show their thanks for teachers. US students like to give small gifts to their teachers, and their teachers love getting thank-you notes from their students. One day, I’m on my way to work. Then I saw a little girl carrying a small Cambridge schoolbag. Businessmen(商人) in Britain make the bag for students. It can hold a lot of things, such as textbooks, pens, snacks and water! So it is very popular among students in the UK.
My first bag was a green cloth bag. It was a present from my mum. My mum made it for me by herself. It wasn’t that pretty, but strong. At that time I was short, so my mum made the rope shorter. After eating all the meals prepared by my mum, I ran to school with my classmates. At that time, this schoolbag was so light. When I jumped, it jumped. All things in this bag had a collision(碰撞). They gave out many sounds all the way along. At that time I was so happy.
As I grew older, my green schoolbag became heavier and older. The mouth of the bag was opened, and it came to an end. My mum bought me another bag. The bag was big and pretty. I was happy to go out every day with the new bag. The long trip to school seemed quite close. That year I was 12 years old. Though my first schoolbag wasn't made in the UK, it was still a real Cambridge schoolbag in my mind.

How are things with you? It was great talking to you yesterday by phone. As I told you yesterday, I am in Rome today. Tomorrow we are getting the train down to the south of Italy(意大利) and then a ship to Greece.(希腊)
Let me tell you something about where we have visited. I know you want to come here one day, too. We started in England and spent two days in London. We visited many places and enjoyed its history. And the only bad thing was the weather --- it rained the whole time we were there. Can you believe it? When we got to Paris, the sun was shining! We only stayed for one afternoon there because my friends really wanted to visit Euro Disney. It is to the east of Paris. Well, I have to say I like the American Disneyland better. We met some nice people from Canada and spent two great days with them. One of them, Clive, is going to your school next year. What a coincidence! Clive and his wife left us when we took a train to Germany. They went up into Denmark but we continued to Munich (慕尼黑). Wow, what a great city! I bought you a surprise gift there. I hope you like it.
After that, we went south into Switzerland. It was very expensive and we couldn’t stay as long as we wanted, so that's why we're in Italy now!
OK. I want to post this letter now so you can get it by the weekend.
See you soon
Mike

8 . Rivers are one of our most important natural resources (自然资源). Many of the world’s great cities are located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river flowing through it that plays an important part in the lives of its people.
Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation (交通). The longest one in the United States is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation; ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in southeast Asia. The greatest of all for navigation (航海), however, is the Amazon in Brazil. It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles upon it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and recreation for the people who live along their bands. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam (大坝) across a river and let a lake form behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to irrigate (灌溉) their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and industries. However, large cities and industries that are located upon rivers often cause problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers become polluted with chemicals and other materials. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits (利益) of this natural resource.
