1 . What can be both red or green, round or sharp, big or small, and more importantly, loved or hated by someone? Yes, the answer is chilies. Humans eat chilies even though they sometimes cause us discomfort.
About 600 million of Chinese, almost half of the national population, are chili eaters. However, did you know that this spicy(辣的)vegetable could put you in danger? A 34-year-old US man recently ended up in hospital after eating a Carolina Reaper, the spiciest chili people have known so far. After taking just a single bite of one, the man suffered from serious headaches in the following days, reported BBC News.
It is a fact that rating spicy food causes stomachache and headache. But if chilies ae truly harmful, why do people like to eat this vegetable? So what makes people love chilies so much? The secret lies in a natural chemical reaction within human bodies. After eating chilies, the human body reacts to some natural chemicals that produce "a sense of happiness", noted BBC News.
What's more, chilies do good to people in another way. Scientists found that the death rate of those who eat spicy food once or twice a week is 10 percent lower than those who eat it less than once a week. The death rate is 14 percent lower for those who eat spicy food six to seven times a week. This encourages people to eat more spicy food to improve health and bring less death risk at an early age. So, don't worry if you love spicy food. It seems that chilies are actually good for us.

There were three big fish in the lake. One of them, Demo, was wise; another one, Jimmy, was half-wise; Martin, the third one, was stupid.
Some fishermen came to the bank of the lake with their nets. The three fish saw them.
Demo decided at once to leave, to make the long and difficult trip to the ocean. He thought, "I won't discuss with these two about this. They love this place so much that they call it home and will stay on. How silly they are! They still haven't realized we are in great danger now. Their ignorance will cost them their lives."
Seeing the wise fish had left, Jimmy thought, "My guide has gone and now I've lost my chance to escape." He felt sorry for it and then thought, "What can I do to save myself from these men and their nets? Perhaps I should pretend(假装)to be already dead, giving myself totally to the water." So he did that. He went up and down with the water, helpless, within arm's reach of the fishermen.
"Look at this! The best and biggest fish is dead." One of the men lifted him by the tail, and threw him up on the ground. He rolled(滚动)over and over and moved secretly toward the water, and then, back in.
The third fish was aimlessly jumping about, trying to escape with his speed and cleverness. The net, of course, finally closed around him, and as he lay in the hot frying-pan bed, he thought, "If I get out of this, I'll never live again in the limits of the lake. Next time, the ocean! I'll make it my home."

Suddenly I ran to my mother and said, “Tony fell from the open window!” She was very worried and ran out of the kitchen. Then I said, “Don’t worry, I’m just joking.” My mother shouted at me, “If you do it again, I’ll hit you.”
Another day I went swimming with my friends in the sea. I wanted to play a joke on them. In the beginning I swam fast and I called out “Help!”. All my friends came to help me. However, they found that I was joking. But half an hour later I wasn’t joking. I was so fast, soon I got tired and couldn’t swim on in water. I tried my best to call my friends for help, but this time nobody came to help me.

How do you feel when your teacher asks you to work in a group with other students? Do you like to work together with others or work alone?
The Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA, did a survey of students’ ability to work together in groups. They found that students who do well on tests by themselves are also possibly better at working with other people.
This finding was true for many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, where test scores are high, also did well in working together to solve problems. But this was not always the same in every country. Chinese students, who have high scores as well, however, showed average collaborative ability.
“One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers pay too much attention to scores,” said Zhao Zhongxin, former vice president of the Chinese Family Education Association. “Students have to face a lot of exams and they think school is a place for competition.”
“However, collaborative ability is very important for preparing students for today’s society,” he added. “Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers have known the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students with this ability.”
Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls are better than boys at working together. They said girls are more positive to collaborate, which means they are ready to listen to others’ ideas.
PISA also found that the classroom environment will influence how well students collaborate. Students may do better towards collaborating if there are a lot of activities, such as class debates, group work.

5 . Light travels at a speed which is about a million times faster than the speed of sound. You can get some idea of this difference by watching the start of a race. If you stand some distance away from the starter, you can see smoke from his gun before the sound reaches your ears.
This great speed of light produces some strange facts. Sunlight takes about 8 minutes to reach us. If you look at the light of the moon tonight, remember that the light rays left the moon 1.3 seconds before they reached you. The nearest star is so far away that the light that you can see from it tonight started to travel towards you four years ago at a speed of nearly 2 million km/per minute. In some cases, the light from one of tonight’s stars had started on its journey to you before you were born.
Thus, if we want to be honest, we can’t say, “The stars are shining tonight”. We have to say instead, “The stars look pretty. They were shining four years ago, but their light has only just reached the earth.”
1. Light speed is ________ sound speed.A.as fast as | B.a million times slower than |

6 . Language students often think they have memory(记忆) problems. They worry because they can't remember words. In fact, the problem usually isn't with their memory. The problem is with how they study.
To remember words better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. When you see, hear, or read something, it goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it's organized(有条理的). When you put away a book or memory, you can't just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again.
How can you do this with vocabulary? The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences that include it. Even better, you can make up a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is "height", you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.

7 . Medical experts say most Americans do not get enough sleep. They say more Americans need to take a nap—that is to rest for a short period in the middle of the day. They give people advice to sleep lightly before continuing with other activities. The experts say naps might improve health by reducing pressure.
Some European and Latin American companies have supported the idea of napping for many years. They ask people to leave work, go home and have a nap before returning. In the United States, some companies let workers rest simply in their offices. They believe this can help workers make fewer mistakes and also increase the amount of work that a person can do.
Sleep experts say it is likely that people make more mistakes at work than at other times. They say people should not carry out important tasks when they feel sleepy. And they say the best thing to do is to take a nap. About twenty minutes of rest is all you need. Experts say this provides extra energy and can increase your effects until the end of the day. But experts said that a nap should last no more than twenty to thirty minutes. A longer nap will put the body into deep sleep and waking up will be difficult.

AI is a double-edged sword. It can help us, but also cause us harm. Who is using AI? Is AI replacing humans? What should we do to avoid the risks and dangers that AI might bring?
Artificial intelligence is set to benefit mankind in many ways. It will make everyday tasks easier and bring efficiency to various industries. It might just prove to be one of man's greatest inventions.
And yet, like any other technology, ▲ . In February 2018, a group of AI experts got together to discuss the possible misuse of AI. What they found was that "Every AI advance by the good guys is an advance for the bad guys, too," according to Quartz.
Their biggest concern was that criminals (罪犯) could use AI for wrongful purposes. One of the areas they looked at was the use of AI to create websites that could be used to steal people's personal information. Another possibility is that AI programs could be taught to hack software and break into computer secure systems.
There are some other concerns as well. It is possible that AI could be used to create fake images and videos. Chinese tech giant Baidu, in fact, has developed a program called Deep Voice that can "clone" anyone's voice by studying a 3.7-second audio sample.
Many leading figures in the tech world have expressed concern about AI. People like Bill Gates and Elon Musk have called for the industry to be more strictly regulated, as there are few laws right now on the use of AI.
However, this is set to change. In March 2018, the European Union plans to set up a group that will discuss the moral and ethical dangers of advanced AI – and hopefully, suggest some regulations that will help us keep it safe for mankind.
1. Which of the following can be put in ▲ in Paragraph 3?A.AI makes our life easier | B.AI will also bring risks |

C.it will replace workers in the future | D.some people may use it to do bad things |
A.how AI is developed | B.what AI can do in the future |
C.why Baidu is a tech giant | D.how AI can copy voices |
A.there may be new laws to regulate the use of AI. |
B.AI will bring more harm than benefit to mankind. |
C.many AI programmers will become criminals. |
D.there will only be fake news and videos online. |
A.tell readers that AI is a new invention | B.introduce what AI is really about |
C.show that AI also has disadvantages | D.suggest some rules for AI |
10 . Lots of kids love video games. In fact, they like them so much that they might hear something like this from Mom or Dad. “Enough! Find something else to do!”
It can be good advice. Why? Too much of anything is just too much. It’s true that some studies have shown certain video games can improve hand-eye coordination, problem-solving skills, and the mind’s ability to process information. But playing too much video games may lead to health problems.
It’s hard to get enough active play and exercise if you’re always inside playing video games. And without enough exercise, kids can become overweight.
Really overdoing video games also could affect other important things, like friendships and how well a kid does in school. And kids who play violent(暴力的) video games might act more aggressively.
But here’s the good news. Playing video games some of the time can be OK. Just choose quality games and limit(限制) screen time — which includes TV, computer, smartphone, tablet, and video game time combined to no more than two hours a day.
A good game will be the right one for how old you are. If you can choose one that gets you up and moving, that’s even better.
根据短文内容,判断下列句子正误。正确的用“A”表示,不正确的用“B”表示。
1. According to the second paragraph playing video games can improve us in three ways.
2. Playing too much video games can make you clever.
3. Overdoing video games could affect friendships and how well a kid does in school.
