1 .

A bird diary is a record of all the birds you have seen. Here’s how you can prepare information for your bird diary:

●Find a quiet place where there are lots of birds. Birds like places where they can find food and water.

●Sit in a place where you will stay quiet. Don’t scare the birds with sudden movements or loud noises.

●Make notes about the birds. Look at one bird at a time. What can you see? Write about it in a small notebook. At home copy your notes up clearly into your bird diary.

●Draw pictures of the birds. Do quick drawings in your notebook. You can also take photos of the birds. At home, copy the drawings into your bird diary. Put photos into your bird diary, too.

It’s easy to forget things. Here are some questions you should ask yourself:

●What color is the bird? Some birds have bright colors to attract (吸引) other birds. Some birds are the same color as the land they live on, so that enemies don’t see them.

● ______? Some birds have wide powerful wings. Others have small wings that move quickly when they fly. You can stick feathers (羽毛) in your bird diary. Remember never to steal eggs from them.

●What is the bird’s beak like? Birds with short beaks, like finches (雀类), eat seeds. Some birds, like hoopoes (戴胜鸟), have long sharp beaks to catch worms. Hawks and eagles (鹰) have strong beaks. They eat meat.

●What are the bird’s feet like? Can they catch the tree? Are they good for walking or swimming?

文章大意:本文是改编自《白牙》,文中介绍小狼崽如何帮助母狼与山猫战斗及自己如何捕食。
2 . 阅读短文,回答下列问题。
Answer the questions in no more than eight words.

He was the only grey cub (幼崽) the she-wolf had. The other cubs had red in their hair. He was grey like his father. He was also the strongest cub.

There were living things and non-living things in the forest. He learned that most living things ran away from him. By accident, he ate some baby birds. The taste was good. They were the first meat he found for himself.

He met an animal about his own size. It was a weasel, a rat-like animal. It ran at him and bit him. He tried to shake the weasel off, but it held on, soon he was nearly dead. The she-wolf arrived just in time and killed it and ate it. She bent down and took care of her cub. He followed her back to the cave. When he felt strong again, he left the cave and went into the forest. He knew the forest could be dangerous. A large bird nearly killed him. It came out of the sky and caught a squirrel near him. He knew he must watch out for it.

He began hunting for his own food, but he was not good at hunting yet. He still needed food from his mother. One day, she brought him a lynx kitten. He was eating it when he heard a great noise from the mouth of the cave. The kitten’s mother followed the she-wolf to the cave. The she-wolf and the she-lynx started to fight. They would fight to the death. The cub ran forward. He bit one of the lynx’s legs. It was not a big bite, but it was enough to give the she-wolf the chance she needed. Soon the lynx was dead, but the she-wolf was badly hurt. For a week, she did not move. The grey cub had to find food for both of them.

Without his mother to take care of him, he learned what life was about. It was about meat. Without meat there was no life. Animals had to eat other animals to survive. The law was: EAT OR BE EATEN. It was a hard life.

3 . 阅读短文, 然后根据内容回答问题。

Have you ever read the famous novel Robinson Crusoe (《鲁滨逊漂流记》)? Do you know that it was based on a real life story of a Scottish sailor, Alexander Selkirk?

Selkirk was born in Scotland in 1676. As he grew up, he became a sailor (海员). One day, he was asked to fight around South America, while the ship was damaged by the Spanish. He was surprised that the ship would sink, so he tried to land on the next island. The island was Mas a Tierra and it is known as “Robinson Crusoe Island” today.

The island in the Pacific was far away, with nobody around, but Selkirk managed to live there alone for over 4 years. At first, he didn’t realize it would be more than 4 years. He mainly passed the time by reading his Bible (圣经). Though there was nobody else on the island, there were animals, including rats, cats and goats. The rats were such fierce animals that he had to use wild cats to protect himself during the night. During the days on the island, there were at least two ships coming close. Unluckily, they were not friendly and even opened fire on Selkirk, but he escaped successfully.

Finally, on the first of February 1709, when two British ships arrived at the island, Selkirk was rescued. It turned out that his choice was right because no long after his landing on the island, the ship sank. The archaeologists (考古学家) today discovered a campsite of a European on this island and it proved the story true.

"Halloa, little girl!" a young man called out cheerfully," How far is it from the mainroad?"

8 .

When my brother and I were children, we spent a few weeks each summer in the countryside with our uncle. He was a geologist and loved to go on long walks to find stones to add to his collection at the university. More often than not, we followed him.

One day, we left early and this time, our uncle gave us two backpacks. "You can help me carry the samples, " he explained.

Sure, why not? The whole day, we walked around the countryside, and every now and then, our uncle put stones in our bags.We were a bit surprised that sometimes he also took some stones out from our bags, but thought he had just found better samples.

We reached the house in the late afternoon. The backpacks were so heavy that we were really tired out when we put them on the ground. Yet our uncle's backpack was half-empty.

"Why did you give us so many stones? " we asked. "I didn't. You did, " he said, waiting for a while before continuing. "You did not know it, but made you go through a little attitude test today."

"What do you mean an 'attitude test'?" we wanted to know.

"It is something someone once did to me. You see, I listened to every word you said. And whenever   you complained about anyone or anything, I added a stone to your bags. And whenever you talked about something in an attitude of positive thinking, I took out a stone. And now look at your backpacks.

We did. They were full. "I hope you remember this little attitude test. You see, your negative thoughts are like stones. You carry them in your mind just like those stones in a backpack. The more negative thoughts you have, the heavier your mind is. So look at those bags and start paying attention to what you say and how you say things."

This little lesson was one of the most important I ever had. And I remember my uncle with great love for teaching us one of the most important lessons in life—the power of attitude.
