Sometimes, as they say, there is a very thin line between the greatness and the ridiculous. I never really thought about it until a clear winter morning when I was relaxing in the sun and burying my nose in a novel. Suddenly and rudely, I was pulled back to reality.
“Madam!” It was a strange cry. I put my book down. “Madam!” It was coming from the kitchen. I hurried in to it and found Ramu, our soldier.
“I found him, madam! And I’ve got him!” He cried and pointed to a drawer that was shaking.
A human could not hide in a drawer. A snake wouldn’t make sound like that, I thought. Ah! It must be that rat! “Good for you, soldier, I thought. But now what?”
He smiled and said, “I’ll bag it.” Expertly, he caught the rat, tied its neck, like the way you’d put a rope on a dog.
Something must have shown on my face. “Cannot kill the rat, madam,” Ramu apologized softly. “I’ll take it to the other side of the river and leave it.” Clearly, he did not think it was necessary to hurt this small rat.
Before I could reply, he had let the rat out of the bag, and — to my surprise — began walking it out of the kitchen.
“Wait!” I shouted, “it’s just going to come back.”
Ramu stopped and turned back to me. “Then I’ll catch it again, madam.” He promised.
I watched, as the two, man and rat, set off, and walked together? It was a sight I’d never seen: a small rat walking down the road behind a strong man.
When I calmed down, I looked over the wall to make sure they were really going all the way to the river. Then, to my amazement, Ramu handed over the rope to a boy on the bike. I watched to my further surprise as the rat began to run to keep up with the boy.
When I retell this story at parties I often play up the funny part. As I write this, however, I thought deeper: the unexpected kindness I saw, between man and the rat, proved the soldier’s deep belief —

That afternoon, when he stopped once again, another stable boy came up and said, “Sir, a shoe is missing from your horse’s foot. Shall I get him a new one?”
“Let it be,” answered the businessman. “The shoe will stay on for a few hours. I’m in a hurry.” He rode on, but the horse began to limp (跛行). Then it fell down and broke a leg. Last year, I did not like my English class. Every class was like a bad dream. The teacher spoke very quickly and I couldn’t understand her most of the time. I was afraid to ask questions because I didn’t know how to read the words correctly. I just hid behind my textbook and never said anything in class.
Then one day I watched an English movie—Toy Story. I fell in love with this exciting and funny movie. So I began to watch other English movies, too. Although(尽管) I could not understand everything the characters(角色) said, their body language and the expressions(表情) on their faces help me get the meaning(意思). I understood I could get the meaning by listening for just the key words. I found out that listening to something interesting is the secret to the language learning. I also learned some useful sentences like “It’s a piece of cake.” and “It serves you right.” I did not understand these at first. But because I wanted to understand the story, I looked them up in a dictionary.
Now I really enjoy my English class. Do you want to learn English like this?

When we talk about archaeology (考古学), we usually picture a group of people digging in the dirt. They put together the things they collect and find out the stories behind them.
These are all things archaeologists do. According to Encyclopedia Britannia (《大英百科全书》), archaeology is the study of things that people made, used, and left behind. Its goal is to understand what people of the past were like and how they lived. For example, archaeologists study tombs, city ruins and cultural relics (文物). They try to find out how ancient people made tools, why they moved around, and what customs were like in their times.
But what about dinosaurs (恐龙) and fossils (化石)? Do archaeologists study these as well? Actually, that is a misunderstanding. It is paleontologists who study ancient animals. Although “paleontology” and “archaeology” both mean the study of old things, archaeologists just study ancient humans. There is another common misunderstanding about archaeology. Many people think archaeologists only try to find beautiful relics that they can keep for themselves.
First, professional archaeologists do not keep, buy or sell any relics, according to the Kentucky Heritage Council. And second, “archaeologists care about the stories behind the relics more than the relics themselves,” Liu Huiyun, an archaeology student at Peking University, told TEENS. For example, even burned grain can be valuable to archaeologists. I can show them what ancient people ate.

One day, a letter brought Andy a new job. This job changed both his feeling about animals and his way of hunting. The letter said, “I want to write a story about bighorn sheep. I need pictures to go with my story. Will you get pictures of the sheep for me?”
Andy’s two sons wanted their father to take the job. “We will help you!” they said. Bighorn sheep are very wild. Andy knew it would be hard to get their pictures. “But why not try?” they said.
