School uniforms are common in primary and secondary schools in many countries. Here’s a list of countries below.
In Brazil, students wear uniforms in private schools. But in public schools, students don’t have to wear uniforms although they might have one. In general, the uniforms are a pair of blue pants and a white T-shirt with the school symbol printed on it.
School uniforms are used in Cuba. All students wear school uniforms with the color as a symbol of grade level. Children also wear scarfs because they are young pioneers.
Japan introduced school uniforms in the late 19th century. Today, school uniforms are very common. Many boys wear white shirts, short pants and caps. Girls’ uniforms might include a gray pleated (褶) skirt and a white blouse.
In Singapore, all students must wear uniforms. Though the colors are different from school to school, the normal uniform for boys is short or long pants, with a shirt (often white), while girls wear white pinafores or skirts.

I don’t like my school uniform. After school my first thing to do is to take off (脱下) my uniform. I don’t like skirts! I always play sports after school with my friends, and skirts are not good for sports. I like wearing trousers, shorts, T-shirts, jackets and sports shoes. I like baseball caps, too.
I don’t wear skirts out of school. My mom asks me to wear skirts. She thinks girls look beautiful (美丽的) only in skirts. But I don’t think so. Girls can be beautiful in T-shirts and trousers.

5 . Dark blue jackets, striped ties, gray trousers, these are all too familiar to students at Australian Kingswood College—they are part of the school uniform. But the 130-year-old school has introduced some changes. As from 2021, its students will wear polo shirts, shorts and tights(紧身裤)to school.
Elisabeth Lenders is the headmaster of the school. She said the change had been in the works for nearly three years. By replacing its old uniform with activewear (运动服), the school wants to encourage students to exercise more.
According to the WHO, 56% of young Australians are not getting enough physical activity. At the same time, they spend more time using smart phones or computers. Lenders said wearing uniform was a big barrier(障碍)to physical activities. In the 21st century, it is more important for students to be comfortable and healthy. Luckily, with the new “uniform”, students can exercise whenever they want to.
Most students and their parents welcome this change. They are pleased with the new “uniform” and believe it will help their children lead happier and healthier lives.

Kennedy: The school uniform is very important, because it always reminds me that I am supposed to go out of my way to study hard. It also helps prevent school bullying (欺凌). If everyone wears the same clothes, it is impossible to laugh at other people’s clothing. ________
Manson: Students should start school with no uniforms. As they make progress at school, they start wearing it. I always think children need to be proud of their school. The uniform is important for that. So, make students earn (获得) it! If they don’t perform well, they should not be allowed to get one.
Moorhead: In my opinion, kids don’t have to wear uniforms. There should be more choices open to kids in education. They ought to develop their own independence and just be themselves.
1. Why did the junior high school send several students back home?2. In Manson’s opinion, how can students earn the school uniform?
3. Should students wear school uniforms? Why or why not?
7 . Some people think that the debate (辩论) about school uniforms is just about whether students look cool. In fact, this problem is connected with other topics, such as student performance (表现), money, and personal choice. The school uniform debate is very important to parents, teachers, and school official — and to students, too!
Many students argue (争论) that school uniforms would save their parents’ money. According to Nahla, an eighth-grader, “Kids whose families don’t have a lot of money wouldn’t be teased (嘲笑) for their unfashionable clothes.” Besides, some students think that uniforms would help them give much attention to learning. “I think it’s a great idea. Wearing uniforms would teach students that schoolwork is more important than looking good,” argues tenth-grader, Heba. Others believe that school uniforms would help students study better. In the words of a twelfth-grader named Aziza, “If all students have to wear the same uniform, they will try to impress others with their schoolwork and grades, not their clothes.”
Some students are against school uniforms. They argue that uniforms would cost their parents more money, “Uniforms are expensive and can only be worn at school. My parents would still have to buy me other clothes to wear on weekends and after school,” explains ninth-grader, Sherine. According to a twelfth-grader named Susan, “School uniforms don’t allow personal choice.” She feels that uniforms don’t allow students to be creative or express their own decisions about what to wear. Finally, many students like eleventh-grader Reema say that uniforms are uncomfortable. “Students like to wear comfortable clothes,” she says.
In a word, there are strong arguments on both sides of the school uniform debate. Whatever the result is, one thing is important: before making a decision about whether to require uniforms, school officials must consider the opinions of everyone — especially the students.

9 . School uniforms are a part of the British education system whether the students like them or not. My first uniform included a grey skirt, a white shirt, a green and white striped tie, and a green jumper. I was four years old then. Although I didn’t like wearing it at that time, looking back, I now strongly believe it was a good thing.
A uniform stands for not only equality(平等), but also a sense of community. For example, the FC Barcelona team wear the same uniforms and they stand for their club. Similarly, students wear the same uniforms and look smart representing their schools. I would rather be judged(评判)by my actions and personality than the clothes I wear, and I am certain that a football player would rather be judged by his or her ability and skill level over what they wear to practice.
Uniforms are also very practical to both teachers and students. In a teacher’s view, not only is it easier for them to pick us out in crowded areas on school trips, but it is also easier for them to know us in the classroom, because we wear the same clothes every day. To students, we can stay in bed a little longer in the morning as we don’t have to worry about what to wear.

Now in the United States, I am trying to learn new school rules. My school has clear rules.
As for clothes, we must wear school uniforms. We can wear brown, black or gray trousers and shoes. Our shoes must be made of leather or canvas (帆布). No trainers or boots can be at school. We must change into the PE uniform and trainers before doing sports.
The break time between each class is only four minutes. We need to get to the classroom for the next class on time. Sometimes, there is even no time to go to the restroom. We usually put all the books in school bags two minutes before class is over.
If we are late, we must give a good reason or a permission (允许) card from the teacher of the last class. Or we will get lower scores. If we are late five times in one term, then we will be called truants (逃学者). This may bring us a detention (课后留校).
