文章大意:本文讲述通过对实验鼠进行实验,发现了动物在年轻时运动越多,年老时的记忆力就越好。

7 . ①Can exercise during childhood protect you against memory loss many years later? Exercise early in life seems to have lifelong benefits (好处) for the brain, in rats at least.

②“This is an animal study, but it shows that physical activity at a young age is very important—not just good for your body, but for the mind during ageing,” says Martin of the University of Toronto, Canada. “In humans, it may put off the appearance of Alzheimer’s (阿兹海默症) symptoms, possibly to the point of stopping them.”

③Martin’s team divided 80 young male rats into two groups, and placed running wheels in the cages of one group for six weeks. Around four months later—when the rats had reached middle age—the team taught all the rats to connect an electric shock with being in a specific box. When placed in the box, they froze with fear.

④Two weeks later, the team tested the rats in three situations: exactly the same box in the same room, the same box in a different room , and a completely different box in a different room.

⑤The rats without a running wheel when they were young now froze the same period of time in each of these situations, suggesting they couldn’t remember which one was dangerous. But those that had been able to run when they were young froze 40 to 50 percent less in both changed box settings.

⑥“The results suggest the amount of exercise when we’re young, at least for rats, has influence on brain and health—in the form of better memories—when we’re older,” says Arthur Kramer of Northeastern University in Boston, who has found that, in humans, exercise improves the growth of new brain cells (细胞).

_____.

A.Exercise when young can stop memories from losing when older in rats.
B.Physical activity is important for physical health.

We know people can be nice, but what about animals?

Scientists say that some animals are capable(有能力的) of being nice. Animals that live in groups like foxes, chimpanzees(大猩猩), and elephants—follow rules. They have to follow rules to get along and to survive(生存). The animals can act nicely even when they don’t have to. Here are some surprising stories about animal behavior.

Most people usually walk away when someone is unkind to them. Marc Bekoff, a researcher at the University of Colorado, saw a female(母的) red fox do just that. The female fox was unhappy because a male(公的) fox played roughly(粗鲁地) with her. When she walked away, the male fox showed her that he wanted to play nicely. He lowered his head and rolled on his back. The female fox gave him another chance, and this time he played more gently.

Geza Teleki is a scientist who studies chimpanzees in Tanzania. One day, Teleki hiked far away from his campsite. He didn’t have any food. Teleki wanted some fruit from a tree, but the tree was too tall. A young chimpanzee watched him with surprise as he tried to get something to eat. The chimpanzee climbed the tree, picked the fruit and gave it to him!

An elephant in Kenya hurt his trunk(象鼻子). He needed help because he couldn’t put food into his mouth. Researcher Kayhan Ostovar watched silently. He saw the hurt elephant show his sore trunk to a healthy elephant. The healthy elephant didn’t need any more information. He took a bush and put it carefully into his new friend’s mouth.
