Dogs like living with people. They are very friendly. They can do many things for people.
Some dogs help people take care of sheep, and other dogs help them find the lost children. Some of the dogs can even help the blind.
There is a kind of dog “Seeing Eye dog”. Now we can see this kind of dog all over the world. They work for the blind. The Seeing Eye dogs are strong and easy to train. They help the blind to walk from place to place. Before a dog becomes a Seeing Eye dog, he must go to a training school for about three months. The dog has many things to learn. First, he has to learn to sit or stay when he hears the trainer’s call. In his next lesson, the dog learns to take his trainer across busy streets. At the end of the training school, he must take tests. When he passes the tests, the Seeing Eye dog will do things by himself. Now he can help the blind people. The new owner may be a man, a woman, or even a child. It takes the dog and his blind owner about a month to learn to work and live together.

2 . How Fast Can Animals Shake?
When we get wet, we need a towel (毛巾) to get ourselves dry. When a dog gets wet, all it needs is to shake its body. A study shows that a wet dog can shake off half the water on its body in less than a second. In fact, this common act of a dog works better than a washing machine.
The study found that animal shaking begins with the head and ends with the tail. During a shake, the animal’s head and skin all move. Smaller animals must shake faster than bigger animals to get water off. For example, in one second, a rat can shake 18 times, a dog 6 times, and a bear 4 times. Bigger animals can get their body with fewer shakes.
For animals, shaking is not just about getting themselves dry. It is also about saving their lives. Being wet makes animals heavier, and that makes them harder to run. In the animal world, how fast an animal can run often decides whether it will live or not. Maybe that is why the “wet-dog shake” has become a common habit of many animals.

Sea turtles (海龟) live in the sea most of the time. The beaches in Florida are home to sea turtles. Female sea turtles come here from the ocean to lay eggs. Then they return to the ocean. However, the number of some of these turtles is falling. They are in danger. So people in Florida work together as a community to protect them.
Some volunteers take direct action to help the turtles. They look closely at the sand to find out where the sea turtles lay their eggs. Then they help bury (埋藏) the eggs in order to save them from being killed. They also help people who are studying sea turtles.
Florida’s government has passed laws to save the turtles. One of these laws is “Florida’s Marine Turtle Protection Act”. This law stops anyone from killing sea turtles or taking away their eggs. It helps protect the turtles from dying out.
People also work together to save the turtles through organizations like the Sea Turtle Conservancy. For example, the bright light from buildings near the beach can influence sea turtles. The baby turtles may get lost. Many of them do not make it to the ocean and die. The Sea Turtle Conservancy works with house owners to make the lighting in their building’s sea turtle friendly. They also advise people to turn off their lights at night if they live close to a beach.
In a word, everyone can do their part to protect sea turtles and their living places. People in Florida can work as volunteers to clean up the beaches and pick up their own litter. Everyone in the community has the power to make a difference!

Helping Birds in a Changing World
Do you think birds are interesting? Do you like spending time outdoors? Do you care about wildlife and the environment? If you answered yes to these questions. you might think about becoming a bird biologist. Bird biologists are scientists who study birds.
Birds are interesting for many reasons. Birds have a lot in common, but at the same time, they can be very different from one another. All birds have feathers (羽毛), and most of them can fly. They are in different sizes from hummingbirds (蜂鸟) smaller than your fist (拳头) to ostriches (舵鸟) taller than the tallest person. Ostriches can’t fly, but they can run up to 70 kilometers an hour! Bird biologists work to understand more about birds, their habits, and their homes. Some kinds of birds are dying off because they travel a long way during migration (迁徙). In North America, birds travel to northern places in the summer and to more southern places for the winter. Bird biologists are studying how and where birds get hurt along the way and trying to help them. But that’s not all bird biologists do! Beth Flint is a bird biologist in a wildlife refuge (保护区) near Hawaii. She tracks (追踪) all the different kinds of seabirds in the refuge. She enjoys working outside, but she also works in an office. She reads research studies about all the animals in the wildlife refuge, and makes plans to help protect them, especially the birds. She talks to volunteers about the wildlife in the refuge, too.
To become a bird biologist, Dr. Flint studied many fields that all connect. She learned about wildlife, forestry, biology, zoology (the study of animals), botany (the study of plants) and ecology (生态学). Her interest in seabirds started when she was a student. She saw a photo of Atlantic Puffins on arock and wanted to learn more about them.
You never know where your interests may lead (引领) you. They may lead you to become a scientist who studies wildlife!

Monkeys live all around the world. They love living in trees in warm rainforests. Monkeys are clever and lovely.
Sadly, the world of monkeys is in danger. They’re losing their homes because people are cutting down the trees in the forest where they live. The warmer and warmer weather also causes lots of trouble for them.
Another thing to note is that monkeys are used in scientific research. Monkeys share a lot of genes (基因) with humans and scientists study them to learn about our bodies and diseases. But this raises questions: Are they being taken care of well? What’s right or wrong in the name of science? Keeping a balance is really important.
Facing so many problems, there is still hope. Governments are working together to protect them by planting trees to create new homes, making rules to reduce carbon emissions (碳排放), and looking for other ways to do research without using animals.
You can help too! Saving monkeys means we’re making a better future for everyone!
