文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了猴子面临危险的原因以及政府采取了哪些措施来保护猴子。
1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词(每空一词)并回答第5题。

Monkeys live all around the world. They love living in trees in warm rainforests. Monkeys are clever and lovely.

Sadly, the world of monkeys is in danger. They’re losing their homes because people are cutting down the trees in the forest where they live. The warmer and warmer weather also causes lots of trouble for them.

Another thing to note is that monkeys are used in scientific research. Monkeys share a lot of genes (基因) with humans and scientists study them to learn about our bodies and diseases. But this raises questions: Are they being taken care of well? What’s right or wrong in the name of science? Keeping a balance is really important.

Facing so many problems, there is still hope. Governments are working together to protect them by planting trees to create new homes, making rules to reduce carbon emissions (碳排放), and looking for other ways to do research without using animals.

You can help too! Saving monkeys means we’re making a better future for everyone!

Monkeys are in 1
Monkey’s situationThey are 2 homes because of smaller forests and the rising temperature.
They are studied in science because they have many genes that are the 3 as those in people.

文章大意:本文讲述通过对实验鼠进行实验,发现了动物在年轻时运动越多,年老时的记忆力就越好。

2 . ①Can exercise during childhood protect you against memory loss many years later? Exercise early in life seems to have lifelong benefits (好处) for the brain, in rats at least.

②“This is an animal study, but it shows that physical activity at a young age is very important—not just good for your body, but for the mind during ageing,” says Martin of the University of Toronto, Canada. “In humans, it may put off the appearance of Alzheimer’s (阿兹海默症) symptoms, possibly to the point of stopping them.”

③Martin’s team divided 80 young male rats into two groups, and placed running wheels in the cages of one group for six weeks. Around four months later—when the rats had reached middle age—the team taught all the rats to connect an electric shock with being in a specific box. When placed in the box, they froze with fear.

④Two weeks later, the team tested the rats in three situations: exactly the same box in the same room, the same box in a different room , and a completely different box in a different room.

⑤The rats without a running wheel when they were young now froze the same period of time in each of these situations, suggesting they couldn’t remember which one was dangerous. But those that had been able to run when they were young froze 40 to 50 percent less in both changed box settings.

⑥“The results suggest the amount of exercise when we’re young, at least for rats, has influence on brain and health—in the form of better memories—when we’re older,” says Arthur Kramer of Northeastern University in Boston, who has found that, in humans, exercise improves the growth of new brain cells (细胞).

_____.

1. Which of the following is TRUE about the study?
A.Exercise when young can stop memories from losing when older in rats.
B.Physical activity is important for physical health.
C.Using the running wheels is of benefit to the rats’ growth.
D.Physical activity can help human’s Alzheimer’s symptoms.
2. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Study.B.Animal.C.Rat.D.Exercise.
3. How are Paragraph 3 and 4 mainly developed?
A.By listing numbers.B.By giving an example.

Emperor penguins are the largest penguins on the earth. The largest emperor penguin is over a meter tall and up to 40 kilograms heavy.

For many months each year, emperors live near the sea in large groups called colonies. However, in May, the weather gets colder and ice covers large part of the sea. Each colony moves many kilometers from the water. There, each mother penguin lays just one egg. Then all the hungry mothers must walk back to the sea to find food. The father penguins put their eggs on top of their feet, under a special piece of skin called the brood pouch.

Working together

For two months, the father penguins keep the eggs safe and warm. They do this through some of the coldest weather on Earth. By July, it is winter in Antarctica. Most animals leave for warmer places, but the father penguins stay. In this time, without food, a father penguin can lose almost half of his body weight, so he is thinner.

New Life

By August, the babies begin to hatch. The mother penguin returns just in time to see her baby come out of its egg. The chick is then moved to her brood pouch. This can be difficult. If the chick falls, it may freeze quickly because of the really cold weather, so the penguin parents must be very careful. Once the chick goes into its mother’s brood pouch, the father penguin can go back to the sea to find food.

Growing up

Over the next few months, penguin parents take turns going to the sea for food. They each make the trip over a few times, bringing back food for the chick. The chick grows quickly and is always hungry.

Into the Water

By December, winter is ending. The chick is five months old and can live by itself. Soon it goes into the water for the first time. It will swim and eat. By next April, it goes back here. After a few more years, it, too, will start its own family.

1. The underlined word “hatch” in Paragraph 4 means ________.
A.pushing out from its bodyB.putting the egg on top of its feet
C.coming out of an eggD.moving to the brood pouch
2. What may happen if the chick falls onto the ice?
A.Mother penguin will feed it.
B.The chick will die because of the cold.
C.Father penguin will play with it.
D.The chick will sleep on the snow.
3. The best title for this passage would be ________.
A.How Emperor Penguins Find Food
B.Emperor Penguins and Cold Weather
C.Different Kinds of Penguins
D.How Emperor Penguins Look After Babies
4. How does Father penguin help during the growing of the baby penguin?(40-50 words)

There are about 250 kinds of turtles. Most turtles live near fresh water. However, land turtles, also known as tortoises, do not swim at all. Sea turtles live nearly their whole lives in salt water.

Tortoises

Tortoises are slow. They have short, thick back legs. Their front legs are very good for digging. Many tortoises can pull their heads, legs, and tails inside their shells. They quickly do so at any sign of danger. Their strong shells can protect them. Unlike most other turtles, tortoises eat only plants. Tortoises hatch from eggs. The mother tortoise digs a hole, lays some eggs, and covers them with earth. When the baby tortoises hatch, they must dig their way out of the hole. The largest tortoises can grow to four feet long. They may weigh up to 600 pounds.

Sea Turtles

Like tortoises, sea turtles lay their eggs on land. The mother turtle comes out of the ocean onto the beach. She digs a hole, lays her eggs, and returns to the sea. When the baby turtles hatch, they head straight for the water. Sea turtles can swim very fast. They use their front legs like wings to “fly” through the water. Although most turtles can pull their heads and legs inside their shells, sea turtles cannot. The green sea turtle eats only plants. Other sea turtles eat both plants and animals. The largest of all sea turtles can weigh over 1,000 pounds.

Get to know different kinds of turtles and compare them.

9 .

“Come on, boys.” Grandpa said to me and my friend Aslam. “Tonight we work like men.”

The air felt heavy. I wished I were at home, studying… But Grandpa was counting on me. We needed the money so I could stay in school.

As we went into the forest, two women were carrying loads of firewood home.

“What if there were snakes?” Aslam said. “I’m not like you, Rahim. Like last week when you saved that snake those boys were about to kill…”

“But I’m here now.” I knew what the traders would do with the pangolin if we found one. I wished…

“A den* is near. You stay here. I’ll go for another one,” Grandpa handed Aslam a box.

“Remember, the traders won’t pay for an empty box.”

“If we get caught hunting pangolins, we could go to prison*, right?” “Why do people pay so much for pangolins?” Aslam asked me.

“People think they are magical and can cure all diseases.”

We waited until we heard a noise. In the moonlight, we saw a small pangolin, riding along on its mother’s tail.

“Get it, Rahim!”

Sensing danger, the mother curled up around the baby like a ball, protecting it from us. “I can’t.”

“You have to be a man,” Aslam said.

“I know!” I was almost shouting.

I picked up the ball. “Tonight I will be a man.” I held the pangolin ball, feeling its heart beating. Then I did what I must do to be a man.

Grandpa cheered when he saw the box. “You found one! Let’s go home.”

However, two policemen had been waiting for us.

“These boys have nothing to do with it!” Grandpa stepped forward.

One officer took the box out of my hand. “Firewood?” He kept searching in the leaves.

“I can explain,” Aslam piped up. “This boy, Rahim, is a top student. He is always studying plants.”

The officer shook his head. “At midnight?”

“They are especially full of life at night,” Aslam said.

Grandpa looked from Aslam to me, to the box. I didn’t know whether he was proud of me or disappointed.

When we reached home, I bowed my head, “I’m sorry, Grandpa.”

“Rahim, you are soft-hearted. I hope you know I never liked the work either. You must stay in school so you will never have to do work you are ashamed of.” His arms curved around me, protective as a mother pangolin.

1. What did Rahim’s Grandpa ask him to do that night?
A.To study plants.B.To save snakes.C.To carry firewood.D.To catch pangolins.
2. According to Aslam, how was Rahim different from him?
A.Rahim enjoyed adventures.B.Rahim was soft-hearted.
C.Rahim wasn’t afraid of wild animals.D.Rahim didn’t like following orders.
3. Why did the policemen set the boys free?
A.Because Aslam told the reasons to the police.
B.Because the boys apologized for what they did.
C.Because Grandpa protected the boys from the police.
D.Because Rahim had replaced the pangolin with firewood.
4. At the end of the story, did Rahim become the man as Grandpa expected? Why do you think so? (About 40 words)
