2 . Imagine the situation. You are driving along a desert or on a mountain. You have no idea where you are. You passed the last house two hours ago. Then your car breaks down. It is night and it is cold. You have no mobile phone. What do you do? Well, next time take a GPS with you. This invention may be able to help you. It is a device (装置) which uses satellites (卫星) to find the user's position (位置). It can find your position to within 20 metres. A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are.

GPS, which means Global Positioning System, is a small radio receiver. It looks like a mobile phone. You can hold it in your hand, or put in your pocket. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, planes, or boats. Some of these devices have electronic maps, so you know where you are. For example, in a city they can tell you the name of the street.

There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand, or have it fixed into your car, plane, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting the Earth. The receiver contacts at least four of the satellites and calculates (计算) its position. The third part of the system is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world. They control the satellites and make sure they are working well.

Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile. They are becoming cheaper and more and more accurate (精确的). There are also new uses for the GPS. Perhaps they will become like watches. Everyone will have one and you will never be lost again.

4 . Wearing a white blouse, Ai-Da studies her subject and begins to draw. She looks like any artist at work. However, the "beep ... beep ... beep" noise from her arm gives her away. Ai-Da is, in fact, a robot.

Ai-Da has been described as the world's "first AI (人工智能) robot artist". She takes her name from Ada Lovelace, the world's first female computer programmer. Scientists at Oxford University developed AI systems (系统) for Ai-Da. The robot has cameras in her eyeballs. After she has studied a subject, she will use her left arm to draw. Now, Ai-Da can only use a pencil for sketches (素描). The plan is for her to paint.

Ai-Da is not the first AI system to produce artworks. Since 2006, scientists have been developing software (软件) to turn photos into drawings. Last year, an artwork created using AI was sold in New York for $132,500. However, Ai-Da's human-like appearance brings something new to the field.

In June, Ai-Da opened her first exhibition at Oxford. There were about 30 drawings by the robot. Ai-Da, standing next to her artworks, attracted (吸引) many visitors.

Ai-Da's inventor, Aidan Meller, talked about the importance of the robot. "Ai-Da brings a new voice to the art world," she said. "AI is going to be the big thing of the 2020s. That influences us greatly." Meller hopes the exhibition was just the start and that more will follow to show how AI is influencing human life.

7 . When she was 16, Joanne Loewenstern learned that her parents weren’t her birth parents. She was also told that her birth mother was a woman named Lillian Feinsilver and she had died days after giving birth to her in New York. Feeling sad and doubtful, Joanne spent nights crying, wondering what her birth mother had been like. And yet, some part of her believed her mother was still alive. The doubts troubled Joanne for years.

Shelley, Joanne’s daughter-in-law, suggested taking DNA test to find her birth family. That was in 2017, and Joanne was 79 years old. Joanne took the test, and about a year later Shelley received a message from a man named Sam Ciminien, whose genetic report had matched him with Joanne.

Shelley immediately wrote back to Sam, asking whether he knew a Lillian Feinsilver. “Yes,” Sam said, “that’s my mother’s name.” Almost unbelievably, she was alive, at age 100- Joanne had been right all along.

But there were more shocks to come. Sam said that Lillian lived in an assisted-living facility in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Joanne lived in Boca Raton, more than 80 miles away.

The families quickly planned a reunion at the facility. A month later, Joanne found herself sitting across from the mother she had searched for her whole life. Lillian, who has dementia, was silent in a wheelchair.

“I don’t know if she recognizes me,” Joanne said.

Joanne said to Lillian that she’d been told her birth mother had passed away. No expressions on Lillian’s face, Joanne started to cry. At that point Lillian’s eyes brightened. Joanne excitedly began telling Lillian all about her family. Lillian smiled. Then she said the words Joanne had waited more than 60 years to hear: “This is my daughter.”

Joanne learned that over the years, Lillian had repeatedly told her family that she “lost her daughter”. Everyone, including Lillian, believed that the baby had died.

The two women spent that first afternoon together joyfully. “I’m proud,” Joanne said. “This is something wanted to do all my life.”

Antarctica (南极洲) is the coldest, driest and windiest place on our planet. What would it be like to live and work there? On Oct. 15th, 2019, 50 Chinese scientists set sail from Shenzhen, heading for Antarctica. This was our country's 36th Antarctic expedition. The ship, Xuelong 2, is the first icebreaker made in China. Xuelong 2 is one of the world's best research icebreakers.

It can sail to any place around the world in one trip without refueling (加燃料). It can work in temperatures as low as -30%℃. It is the first in the world to use two-way ice-breaking technology, which means that it can break the ice while moving forward or backward.

Because of Antarctica's special environment, scientists from around the world have been there to do studies for many years. The study of Antarctica's geology (地质) is also important. Rock in Antarctica can tell scientists what the weather was like a long time ago. And they can help scientists understand how the earth has changed over time. There are also many wild animals, such as penguins and seals. Scientists can learn how animals live in cold places by studying them.

As we all know, life in Antarctica is not easy-it's cold and sometimes dangerous. But scientists say it's still quite fun. For example, some scientists study how penguins walk, what they eat and why they move from one place to another. They are excited to see the cute animals playing around. They hope their studies can help protect them.

Xuelong 2 finished its tasks and returned to Shanghai on April 22, 2020.

9 . Print a mobile phone at home. Download a film in just one second. Amazing things like these might become reality in 2019 as new technology enters our lives. Check out a few examples here.

Iron Man Suit

Have you ever imagined what fun it would be to fly to school? This Iron Man-style suit from a British company could make your dreams come true. The suit allows users to fly just like Iron Man. It can reach a top speed of 80 km per hour. There is a long way to go before this technology is available to everyone, as the suit is still quite expensive — one model is sold for $440, 000 (about 3 million yuan). It is also very noisy.

3D-printed houses

There are 1.2 billion people in the world who don't have a proper house to live in. The 3D-printed houses made by ICON in Texas may help to solve this problem. The company can print a single-storey house of 60m2 in just 12 to 24 hours. The walls of the house are made of a special cement (水泥) that looks like cream. The 3D-printed houses use less cement than normal houses. 100 homes will be built for people in the Republic of Panama this year. Each house costs only $10,000.

Huawei Mate X

Is it possible to fold your phone screen? Huawei's newest phone, the Mate X, is foldable. You can fold it in half as if you are closing a book. The Mate X is very thin, working as both a phone and a tablet (平板电脑). When folded, it works as a phone. When unfolded, it is a tablet. The other highlight of Mate X is that it supports 5G which means users can download a whole movie in just a second. But users can take selfies only when the phone is folded, because the phone doesn't have a front camera.

1. Why is the Iron Man suit not available to everyone now?
A.Because of its flying speed.B.Because of its flying distance.
C.Because of its price and noise.D.Because of its fashionable design.
2. What is the advantage of a 3D-printed house?
A.The 3D-printed walls are made of special cream.
B.The new technology is green but quite expensive.
C.The new technology will make the poor people rich.
