Paul was a rich young man. When his father died, he left Paul a beautiful forest manor (庄园). Unluckily, before Paul could sell it for lots of money, lightning (闪电) caused a fire and burnt (烧) the manor.     1     In order to bring back the beauty of the manor, Paul tried to borrow money from a bank. But the bank refused him because the bank didn’t believe he could pay it back.     2     So he hid himself in his room. His wife was worried about him and advised that he should go outside and take a break.

    3     When he turned the first corner (角落), he saw a store with a huge crowd. It turned out that the housewives were waiting in line to buy charcoal (木炭) used for winter heating (取暖).     4     He ran home and hired (雇佣) workers to turn the burnt trees into charcoal. Soon, he sold more than 1,000 boxes of charcoal.     5     In the spring of the following year, he used the money to buy a large number of seedlings (树苗). After a few years, the manor that everyone thought had disappeared came to life again.

3 . One afternoon last year, I walked with my friend along the road in my hometown. He was not a clever student but worked harder than any other student when we studied at school. And now, he is an excellent worker in his company. When we came to a wide bridge, we met a blind man who went to the same direction (方向) as us. He walked very slowly, finding the way with a stick in his hand. I talked with my friend as we were walking. I talked about my five job-hopping (跳槽) experiences within two years and complained (抱怨) the trouble I was still going through. My friend just nodded (点头) and smiled, but he kept silent all along. After a while, I looked forward and found that the blind man walked farther than we did. I couldn’t believe it. I asked, “How did the blind man walk faster than we did?” My friend said. “Because he put his whole heart into walking.” That was for sure. He was just absorbed (专注的) in walking, but I was always talking and complaining while walking. I suddenly learned an important lesson that whatever I want to do well, I must put my whole heart into it.

9 . You’ve heard of space rockets, but have you heard of a space balloon? A company called Space Perspective is planning to use its new balloon called Space Neptune to take people to the edge (边缘) of space. It is expected to take common people on an out-of-the-world vacation in 2024.

Taking off from Kennedy Space Center, the trip will take six hours—two hours travelling up, two hours enjoying the view and two hours travelling back. Below the hydrogen (氢气)-filled balloon, a spaceship is large enough for eight travelers to stand and walk freely within. Inside the ship are comfortable seats, free Wi-Fi and even a bar. During the six-hour trip, the guests will be able to send photos or videos to people on the ground while enjoying food and drinks.

Although the balloon won’t really fly into space, this won’t be a problem for the guests. At 20 miles above earth, they will experience 360° views of the planet earth and stars, feeling like they are in space, tickets are expensive, though-seats onboard sold for $125,000 each.

Unlike rockets, Space Neptune doesn’t give out carbon dioxide (二氧化碳), which always results in hotter temperatures on the earth. The spaceship will also get its hydrogen from clean and renewable (可再生的) energy. This is why space travel with hydrogen balloons is thought to be the most environmentally friendly so far.

The great news is that no special training is needed for this ride, but the bad news is, you’ll probably have to wait until 2025 because the first year’s tickets are sold out already. So, start saving up!
