“Good luck. Matt! ” Mum called from the beach as I paddled my kayak (划皮艇) into the sea. She was excited to watch me compete in my first kayak fishing competition. I was excited too, but I was also nervous because it was cloudy and the wind was blowing (刮) hard.
To win the competition, I would need to catch a big halibut. The winner would win a new kayak. The halibut is a big sea fish, and it can be 2.5 meters long. I knew how and where to catch a halibut, but today, it would take luck because of the bad weather.
I slowly paddled to an area where I had caught halibut before. When I arrived, I noticed that five kayakers (皮划艇运动员) were already there. I thought that it would not be the best place today.
I went on paddling to another area. When I got there, I took out my favorite fishing pole (鱼竿). That was when I realized (意识到) that I had left all my baits (鱼饵) on the beach with Mum.
What could I use? I got more nervous, but I knew that I had to do something about it. Suddenly, I remembered that I had a lure (假饵). I threw the lure out and started to wait. After about 10 minutes, my fishing pole moved down towards the water suddenly. I pulled back hard on the pole and the fight was on! I could tell right away this was a big fish!

8 . Livestreaming (直播) has become very common in China. Viewers can interact with hosts by messaging them, buying them gifts, or sending them tips(打赏).
However, some children are spending too much money on livestream platforms. Earlier this year, a 17-year-old boy in Jingmen, Hubei province, sent tips that added up to 150, 000 yuan to a host, said Chutian Metropolis Daily. That sum of money was his parents’ life savings.
To prevent things like this from happening again, the National Radio and Television Administration introduced a new rule on Nov. 23 to better manage livestreaming services.
The rule bans children from tipping or sending gifts to livestream hosts and performers. It also requires people to log on livestreaming sites with their real names. This new regulation has been welcomed by parents. According to Legal Daily, about one-fifth of five stream viewers in 2019 were children.
“Online shows and livestreaming have become so popular. I always feel worried that my son might become addicted to them or do something that is harmful to his growth.” said Wang Haifeng, a mother of a 15-year-old boy in Beijing. “Stricter management makes me feel safer.”
In addition to the rule, there are some other measures that will be put in place to help manage livestreaming services.
For example, livestreaming platforms will be required to put a limit on how much money people can send to livestreamers. Once the limit is reached, viewers will not be able to send gifts or tips.
Other rules include stopping livestreaming platforms from encouraging viewers to send gifts or tips. Any host who is found doing this will be added to a blacklist, China Daily reported.

Dear Max. Please help. I live in Germany with my wife and three kids. My parents live in the U.K. I want my kids to have as much contact with their grandparents as possible. The kids all use e-mail, Skype and SMS, but my parents won’t. I’ve bought them a laptop, given them both mobile phones and a digital but they won’t use them. My parents say they hate computers, new camera and technology. My kids call them “The Technophobes.” What can I do? Daniel, Nuremburg, Germany |
You should give them a copy of the film Witness. The film shows the life of the Amish people, who are genuine technophobes. The Amish live in the US states of Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana. They live simple lives and do not usually use many types of modern technology like cars telephones, and electricity. Corey, New York, U.S.A. |
Actually the earliest technophobes were the Luddites, a group of cloth workers in the 19th century in Britain during the Industrial Revolution (工业革命). The Luddite cloth workers, who traditionally made cloth by hand, were worried that machines would take away their jobs. because machines could make cloth much faster and cheaper than humans. In 1811 and 1812, the Luddites attacked and destroyed the machines, but the British government supported the factory owners. Many Luddites were arrested and killed. The novel Shirley will tell your parents all about it. Laura, Valencia, Spain |
You’re not alone, Daniel. There are millions of technophobes out there. A recent survey in the U.K. found that 23% of the adult population in the U.K. are technophobes. Of that group 54% are men and 46% women. 55% are over 55 years old. Rex, Oxford, U.K. |
One thing you could try is to find hardware that is designed for older people to use. An example is the mobiles made by the U.S. company Jitterbug. Instead of icons and menus, the Jitterbug phones ask users simple “yes/no” questions and have larger keypads. The company realized that there are about 100 million older users in the U.S. So designing technology for them was a good business idea. Graham, Patras, Greece |
A.Parent-child relationship. | B.Growth problem of teenagers. |
C.Health problems of old people. | D.Problems with using technology. |
A.People who dislike new technology. |
B.People who destroy new technology. |
C.People who can invent new technology |
D.People who are interested in new technology. |
A.Corey and Rex. | B.Corey and Laura. | C.Rex and Graham. | D.Laura and Graham. |
