Will you come and see us?
Tiger: Hey, my brothers, have you heard the news? The Shanghai Students’ Post has finally decided to write about our show in Shanghai. The editors are going to put us on the front page.
Monkey: Front page! Really? That would be cool. Shall we take this chance and say something to their readers?
Pig: Of course! But what should we say?
Monkey: Ah, Piggy, does your big head ever produce any good ideas? Let me begin first, then. Ahem, boys and girls, it is nice to meet you here in Shanghai! We’re now on display at the Minhang Museum. The exhibition, “Return in Golden Age”, will last until December 18.
Tiger: So, let’s help them learn about our history, shall we?
Ox: Sure. Although you can only see four of us here right now, there were actually twelve of us in total in the beginning. Each of us was based on one of the zodiac animals that could be found in traditional Chinese culture. We used to be part of a water clock fountain in the Old Summer Palace in Beijing. Throughout the day, we took turns shooting water out of our mouths, and at noon, we would do this all together at the same time.
Pig: Ah, yes, we helped people to tell the time.
Monkey: But in 1860, during the Second Opium War, a group of British and French soldiers came to the Old Summer Palace. They burned it down and ran off with many valuable treasures, including the twelve of us. Fortunately, our motherland has grown to be much stronger now, and its people have never really abandoned us. Over the past few years, they’ve made continuous efforts to have us returned home. Rat and Rabbit are now lying at the National Museum of China in Beijing. The four of us and a replica of Horse are now welcoming visitors in Shanghai.
Ox: But our brothers Dragon, Snake, Goat, Rooster and Dog are still unaccounted for. I miss them so much!
Pig: So do I!
Tiger: Aargh...boys and girls, bear in mind that seeing is believing. Come and get a close look at all of our details—such as our lifelike hairs. Only then will you feel truly amazed by the wisdom of ancient Chinese craftspeople.
