1 . The global climate (全球气候) has been changing over thousands of years. The global average temperature (平均气温) today is about 15℃. Scientists find that the planet is warming faster than ever before. The 20 warmest years on record have been in the past 22 years. If this situation continues, temperatures may rise by 3—5℃ by 2100.
Scientists say we should try to stop the situation and not allow the global average temperature to rise more than 1.5℃. Even a 2℃ rise will be bad for us all. Now, 0.5℃ doesn’t sound like much—but it could make a big difference to the planet.
A 2℃ rise means that all the coral reefs (珊瑚礁) will disappear, but a 1.5℃ rise means that there will still be some. Also, 18 percent of the insects (昆虫) on the earth will disappear if the temperature goes up by 2℃. But only 6 percent will disappear at 1.5℃. A 2℃ rise will also mean that 37 percent of people will be influenced by dangerous heatwaves. That’s twice the number compared to at a 1.5℃ rise.
Do you want to know what scientists say? They say that everyone and everything is far better off in a world that limits the rise to 1.5℃.
So, what can we do? Please return to us in our magazine next month, you will read about the advice given by the world’s top scientists, researchers and leading environmental protectors. We’d also like to hear about your ideas and suggestions. Please write to us at 123socialmagazine@yahoo.co.uk. Let’s work together to limit the temperature rise to 1.5℃.

With Sora, you may soon be able to find out. The latest AI model can generate videos up to a minute long from some key words in seconds. It was built by OpenAI, the company behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT.
The public cannot use Sora now. OpenAI is asking experts to test it for possible risks (风险). The model is also open to a small group of artists. The company hopes to make Sora better.
Before Sora, the leading text-to-video AI model was made by Runway. The videos it produced were short and often frightening. So most people were surprised by the high quality of Sora’s videos.
Sora model isn’t perfect now because it may not understand cause and effect. “For example, a person may take a bite out of a cookie, but then the cookie may not have a bite mark,” OpenAI says on its website. What’s more, Sora cannot tell left or right. In a video on the OpenAI website, a man is running on a treadmill (跑步机) in the opposite direction. At the same time, some people have other worries. They are afraid that some people may not use AI-generated content in a correct way. Unreal AI-generated information is the biggest risk the world faces. To solve this problem, OpenAI says that it’s also building tools to help users to find out videos made by Sora.

6 . In 1621, the Plymouth colonist (殖民者) and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest festival that is known today as one of the first Thanksgiving Celebrations in the colonies (殖民地). For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by colonies and states themselves. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln made it known to the public that a national Thanksgiving Day will be held each November.
In many American families, the Thanksgiving celebration now centers on cooking and sharing a big meal with family and friends. Turkey has become a symbol of the holiday. Today, however, nearly 90 percent Americans eat the bird—whether roasted, baked or deep-fried on Thanksgiving. Other traditional foods include stuffing (火鸡填料), mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Volunteering is a common Thanksgiving Day activity, and communities often hold food drives and host free dinners to the people in need.
Parades have also become an important part of the holiday in cities and towns across the United States. Presented by Macy’s department store since 1924, New York City’s Thanksgiving Day parade is the largest and most famous, attracting some 2 to 3 million people along its 2.5-mile route and drawing a huge number of television audience.
Beginning in the mid-20th century and perhaps even earlier, the president of the United States has “pardoned” (赦免) one or two Thanksgiving turkeys each year, sparing the birds from slaughter (屠杀) and sending them to a farm to live a happy life. A number of U.S. governors also perform the turkey pardoning activity every year.

7 . During the COVID-19 pandemic (疫情), many people under lockdown (防范禁闭)feel lonely (孤独的) and bored. “There is a loneliness epidemic,” said John Dattilo from Pennsylvania State University, US. So he, together with an international team of researchers, studied how to reduce (减少) loneliness and increase positive feelings during the pandemic.
According to their new study, reduced loneliness has something to do with doing enjoyable activities that require both concentration (注意力) and skill.
“When people lose themselves in what they are doing, they enter a state (状态) called ‘flow’,”
Dattilo explained. “Flow can be achieved by doing activities that we value and that require us to pay full attention to using our skills.”
To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance between the challenge of the task and your skill level. For example, if you’re trying to create a complex computer program but your skill level is low, then you’re possible to feel stressed out instead of achieving “flow”. On the contrary (相反地), if the task is too easy, then boredom will set in and “flow” will not appear, either.
If you have artistic skills, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow. So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.
“When we enter a state of flow, we become focused, and we experience enjoyment,” Dattilo said. “When we leave a state of flow, we are often surprised by how much time has passed.”
However, watching television usually doesn’t help people enter flow, because there aren’t any challenges.
“People tend to thrive (茁壮成长) on healthy activities and challenge,” said Dattilo. “We hope this research will help people live fuller, happier, healthier lives.”
1. The underlined word “complex” in the passage is used to describe something ________.A.is made of many different things or parts | B.is finished or done |

C.we become focused |
