Long time ago, people from other cultures used their hands to eat food, while the ancient Chinese invented chopsticks to keep their hands clean. Early chopsticks were used mainly for cooking until 400 A.D. when people began eating with chopsticks.
We don’t know exactly when chopsticks were invented. There’s a research showing that they didn’t come into wide use until about 300 B.C. Chinese thinker Confucius was an important person in the history of chopsticks, because he thought peace would not appear if people used knives during a meal.
The “no-knives-on-the-table” rule led to a big change in Chinese cooking. Food had to be cut into small pieces. This was the birth of Chinese cooking and it has made Chinese food popular around the world.
However, many Westerners find it difficult to use chopsticks. Eric, a foreign teacher, had the experience of learning to use chopsticks. “I need to hold them properly to be able to put the food carefully into my mouth.” Eric’s Chinese friends taught him patiently, but it still took him months to learn this skill. “But it’s worth learning. I have learned a lot from this experience,” Eric said.
Cultures can often be understood through food. For Chinese, food doesn’t just provide energy. It also brings happiness. And chopsticks also mean a lot. As a good example of Chinese culture, they show the Chinese wisdom (智慧).

Plastic pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems all over the world. Many countries are looking for ways to solve the problem. On November 7, 2022, China started a “Bamboo instead of Plastic” project with the International Bamboo Organization. It will hopefully reduce plastic pollution.
Bamboo is a plant of great value, such as cleaning air and preventing soil going away. Unlike trees which usually need a long time to fully grow, bamboo can be put into use in 3 to 5 years. As long as it is protected well, bamboo can be cut every year and doesn’t have to be replanted. Bamboo can be used to make different kinds of products. These products can take the place of plastic products in many ways. And the cost of these products are usually quite low compared to the plastic ones.
China is one of the countries with plenty of bamboo in the world. The Chinese are a pioneer in the use of bamboo. Zhejiang Province has set up companies to produce and develop bamboo products. Many of them have been sold to over 100 countries. China is also sharing its technology to help India and Japan, the countries which are rich in bamboo. It is hoped that countries around the world will work together for global green development.

The third largest country in the world
China is the third largest country in the world. In the north-west, you can find the hottest and driest places in the country. In the west, the countryside is beautiful, and the mountains are high. Some of the mountains are more than 7000 metres high. They are covered with ice and snow all year round, so people cannot live there. Qomolangma is the highest mountain in the world. It is also in the west. Every year people from all over the world try and climb it.
Some of China’s most important rivers begin in these mountains. In the west, they are very small. Then they become bigger as they flow to the east. Rivers like the Changjiang River and the Yellow River begin in the west of China.
In some places, the rivers are connected to big lakes, like Dongting Lake in Hunan Province. Most of the rivers run to the east and the south. In time, they run into one of China’s seas—the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea or the South China Sea.

Dear big brothers and sisters,
Hello, my dear big friends. I am a 5-year-old girl called Amber. Can you believe I am so busy on weekdays?
In the morning, my mom cooks breakfast for me and I help to clean the table and wash the dishes. After that, my father takes me to the kindergarten. My friends and I exercise, play games, sing and dance. It is interesting. Because I like dancing and my teacher, Miss Huang, is kind to us. In the afternoon, I have an English class and we have fun playing ball games. Before I go home, I go to the farm to feed some chickens, ducks and rabbits. They are so cute that I love them so much. In the evening, I go running with my elder sister. Because she needs to keep fit. After that I feel tired but happy. At night, my mom sings to me but I don’t even listen to her for long, because I am so tired. I have such busy but interesting weekdays. Don’t you have interesting weekdays?

Amber

These days, Dr. Hunt made a survey (调查) about middle school students in Guangzhou. The result shows that 18% of the students have mental (心理) problems. Some students have lots of worries and feel unhappy because they have problems in learning and getting on with people like their parents and classmates. Here are two students talking about their problems.
Chen Han, 14-year-old girl
I am very afraid of the exams. I always study the hardest in my class, but I can’t get good grades. I can’t think of anything when I am having an exam. And before exams, I can’t sleep well for days.
Su Ning, 15-year-old boy
I do well in my studies. However, I hardly have friends. Because I’m from a poor family, I don’t have enough money to buy expensive shoes and my classmates laugh at me. I always feel sad.
Many students who have problems won’t go for advice or help. Some think they will look stupid (愚蠢的) if they go to see a doctor. How to help these students? Mr. Ma, an expert from Beijing has the following suggestions (建议) for students:
☆Talk to your parents or teachers often.
☆Take part in group activities and play sports.

Why should you set goals (目标)? Because goals can help you do and experience everything you want in life. Instead of just letting life happen to you, you should have goals that allow you to make your life happen.
A successful person knows what his life will be like and set many goals. It’s like a map to show you where you want to go. With it, you can get there easily. Think of it in this way. There’re two drivers. The first one has a destination (目的地) in mind, which can be found on a map. So he can drive straight there. But the second driver has no destination. He starts at the same time from the same place as the first driver, but he drives around and doesn’t know where to go. Which driver do you want to be?
Winners in life set goals and follow them. Unsuccessful people just let go of their life. Goals aren’t difficult to set and reach. It’s up to you to find out what your goals really are.
Research tells us that when we write goals down, it will be easier for us to make it. And we can see them over and over again. So they are harder to forget. When you write your goals down in a special way, they will bring you nearer to what you want.
1. Why should we set goals?2. Who knows what their life will be like and set many goals?
3. Which driver would you like to be if you want to get to the destination easily?

Hello, everyone! My name is Mike Brown. I’m from America and I’m 14. My birthday is on October 15th. I’m a middle school student. I learn many subjects in school. My favorite subject is science. The science teacher, Mrs. Green, is my friend Jill’s mother. She is nice and she explains (解释) everything very well. I also like math. I work hard at math because I think it’s very interesting. I always do very well in the math tests. My friends say I am clever, but I don’t think so. I just work very hard. I also like geography. Because I like learning about people and places. I don’t like English very much. Because the teacher doesn’t make the language fun. We read a lot, sometimes write, but we don’t often speak or listen. It’s not very interesting. Most of the children are bored with English. My classes finish at 4:30, and after that I usually play soccer with my friends on the playground.
I like making friends. Do you want to be my pen friend? Please write to me!
