2 . I went through some difficult times, dealing with the pressures of growing up. I found it hard to communicate with my mother. Relations between us became difficult.
One day, I ran away from home and stayed away for many hours. When I returned home at night, I saw all the pain, anger and disappointment on my mother’s face. We knew that we were in great need of a talk. We agreed to have breakfast together the next morning. It was a turning point in both of our lives and our relationship.
We decided to go to a restaurant. On our way to the table I noticed my mother had two notebooks. I asked her what they were for. She explained to me that sometimes it was easier to write down our feelings rather than talk about them. We would write down our feelings in the form of a letter. It could be as long or as short as we wanted.
Our first topic was “Why I’m so angry?” I wrote a half page, and my mom filled up nearly three pages. I watched tears run down her face as she wrote. I never realized anyone could hide so much anger. After we finished writing, we exchanged our notebooks. As soon as I started reading my mother’s words, I began to cry and so did she. When we finished reading, we discussed our feelings. Amazingly enough, it felt like all the anger inside me went away from my body. Our talk helped me realize so many things I had never thought of before, not only about my mother but also about other people.
My mother and I continue to use our notebooks as a way of communicating our anger and worries, and our happiness as well. We know that no matter how we feel about each other, our notebooks are a safe place to express our feelings. We have come to an agreement that at the end of each letter we write, “I love you.”

One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift. Unlike other gifts, it came without wrap(包装).

One morning, however, I found its bed empty. I cried for it. Mom was sad and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard Mom and Dad talking in a low voice such words as “hopeless” and “dying”, which sounded unlucky.
Christmas was coming. “Sally, don’t expect any presents this year,” Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room. I’d never seen him cry before.

I believe that family fights are unenjoyable. Whether you are dealing with(应付)a loud sister or a mom or a dad who can’t communicate with easily, the situation can be bad. Family fighting is, on one level, about power. Someone is telling someone else what to do. In a short moment, emotions(情绪)can be brought out and the fight is on. You can go down that old road or you can try something different.
In any fight, you have a need to be listened to and understood. People raise(抬高)their voices(嗓门)and shout at each other because they’re not being listened to. It’s completely unconscious(无意识的). You want your mom or dad to listen and understand. You want your brother or sister to listen and care.
But you always seem to forget that the person you’re fighting with has the same need to be listened to. So if you can put aside(撇开)your need for a few minutes, the situation will change quickly. Give the other person some time to express(表达)his or her feelings, and you will get your turn to be listened to.
And while you are listening, you have to listen for the right information. In emotional(激动的)situations, the best way is not to pay attention to most of the words. Because many people can’t express what they are feeling with words alone, especially when they are upset.
But if the situation starts to get out of control, it would be clever to just keep quiet and leave the problem until later because many fights happen at the wrong time. The situation will die down(平息)quickly, usually in no more than 30 seconds(秒钟). You can either move on to problem solving or reach an agreement to work on it at a better time.
This way, everyone will feel respected(受尊重的)and listened to, even when there is conflict(冲突). Emotions will be understood and respected, and it will bring your family closer together.
1. What does the writer think of family fights?2. What does the writer advise to do when the emotions are brought out and the fight is on?
3. How soon will the situation die down if it starts to get out of control?
4. Do family members need to be listened to and understood in the fight?

8 . Food waste is common in many schools. Students at Whitewater Middle School in the US once found 200 pounds (90.7 kg) of food had been thrown away after just one of their school’s daily meals. They said it was both unpleasant and educational.
A student said, “You don’t realize how much food waste you’re making till you see it.” To deal with this problem, Whitewater has added environmental science as a new school program this year. Teachers will lead students to do research about how food connects with the environment, poverty (贫穷) and people’s health.
Whitewater teachers make sure students know how their own eating habits are part of bigger problems. In environmental literature ( 文 学 ) classes, students read books such as Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal.
Teacher Lyman says that in language arts classes, students discuss why poor people often have less healthy food. Lyman says she wants students to ask themselves some basic questions: “What do we eat? What do we waste?

Jimmy Chipolata is a famous face at Nottingham Trent University. He is a therapy(治疗) dog there. He’s very friendly. When students feel stressed or upset, Jimmy helps cheer them up. His owner, Debra Easter, also works at NTU. Debra said, “Since Jimmy came here, I’ve seen people come forward, including some shyer students. Lots of our staff and students’ health can improve by stroking(抚摩) Jimmy.” She added that quite a lot of students missed their pets at home, and had a hard time with their studies and exams. After spending time with Jimmy, they felt more comfortable.
Jimmy was saved by Debra from a broken home two years ago. When she first saw him, he looked heavy and couldn’t walk. However, with hard work, Jimmy overcame(克服) the difficulties in his life. And now he's able to help stressed-out university students do the same! Jimmy really enjoys his work and loves all the attention he gets. In fact, he’ll get down if people don't take notice of him.
Although the staff and students love Jimmy, not everyone believes in his therapy ability. Chris McGovern said: “If students are getting to 18, 19 and 20 and need a dog to cheer them up, they’ve got a real problem.” But many people think Jimmy is really helpful.

10 . Are you shy? If you are, you are not the only one. You don’t need to worry about it. In fact, about 50 percent of people are shy. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies act shyly. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. Scientists think that some shyness is genetic(遗传的).
Family size might cause(导致) people to be shy as well. Scientists found that 66 percent of shy children had older brothers and sisters. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well. They are not able to learn the same social skills(社交技能) as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. Scientists found surprising differences about shyness in different countries. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in India, only one of three people said so. One scientist says the Japanese and Indians have different ideas of failure(失败).
For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They advise trying new things. And don’t forget—if you are shy, you are not the only one.
