Wax printing (蜡染) is an ancient way of producing dyed textiles (染色纺织品). It is an important part of traditional Chinese culture. It is believed that wax printing appeared in China as early as the Qin and Han Dynasties and got popular in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. There is an interesting story about how wax printing was invented. Once upon a time, a girl was fond of dyeing white cloth blue and purple. One day, while she was working, a bee (蜜蜂) landed on her cloth. She got the bee away and found there was beeswax on the cloth. After she dyed the cloth, she saw a round white mark on the cloth. It looked very pretty. Her discovery later led to the use of wax in dyeing.
Wax printing has many steps. First, draw some pictures of flowers, birds, fish, etc. on a piece of white cloth. Then use a special knife-like tool to spread melted (熔化的) wax on the pictures. After that, put the cloth into a dye bath so that the unwaxed parts take on the color. Finally, wash the dyed cloth in boiling water and wait for the wax to melt, leaving clear picture s in white on the dyed.
Today, wax printing is mainly used in some ethnic minority (少数民族) areas in Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan and Guangxi. Some girls in those areas are highly skilled at wax printing.

2 . Once there was a famine（饥荒）. A rich old man sent for 20 of the poorest children in the town and said to them, “In this basket there is a steamed bread（馒头）for each of you. Take it, and come back to me every day at this hour till we live through this famine.”
The hungry children quickly gathered around the basket and started to fight over the bread. But Gretchen, a poorly-dressed little girl, did not join in the fighting. She stood far away quietly and waited until the children left. Then, she took the only steamed bread in the basket, kissed the old man’s hand, and went home.
The next day the children acted the same as before, and poor Gretchen got an even smaller steamed bread. When she came home and her mother cut the steamed bread open, many pieces of silver（银子）fell out of it. Her mother was very much ashamed, and said, “Take the money back to the good old man at once. It must have got into the bread by accident.”

Winter vacation is coming.

The People’s Republic of China celebrated the 70th anniversary of its founding in October last year. China held its largest military parade (阅兵仪式) in Tian’anmen Square on October 1st. I think reading is important in the whole life for people. It has many advantages.
If you’re feeling hungry, what’s the easiest way to satisfy your hunger? Many of us will reach for a takeaway menu (外卖菜单) and order some delicious but possibly unhealthy food.
