John: Hey, Kate, why weren’t you at the school basketball competition yesterday? I called you so many times, but you didn’t answer.
Kate: Sorry, John. I left my phone at home.
John: What were you doing at the time of the competition?
Kate: Well, I left my house late and when the competition started, I was still making my way to school.
John: Then what happened?
Kate: When I got to the bus stop, I realized that my bag was still at home!
John: But why didn’t you just go home to get your bag?
Kate: I did, but while I was running back home, I saw a dog by the side of the road and it was hurt.
John: Oh, so I’m sure, you helped the dog. I know how much you love animals.
Kate: Yes, I wanted to call the Animal Helpline, but I didn’t have my phone so I had to wait someone to walk by. Then I used his phone to call the helpline.

Dreams may make you smart. This was discovered by scientists who do research on dreams. What is a dream exactly? Scientists explain that during sleep time your brain reviews your experiences in the day. It tries to connect your new experiences with the old memories (记忆). As your brain connects things, it turns them into a story, and then you get a dream. Dreams may help you deal with worries and fears. What has happened during the day may be painful. While you are sleeping, however, the brain will replay the painful memories in a safe dream space. There the bad memories become less painful. And you will feel better after waking up. Dreams also seem to be able to help you learn. This idea is supported by a study. So scientists advise you not to stay up all night studying, especially when an exam is coming. They say a sweet dream might help you get higher marks. Dreams may make you more creative, too. It was reported that a famous songwriter came up with his best song in a dream, and wrote it down as soon as he woke up. However, dreams alone can’t bring about creativity. In fact, the songwriter spent a lot of time thinking about the song before the dream. In a word, hard work matters more for creativity, though dreams also have a role to play. |
2. When does the brain review your experiences in the day?
3. Where does the brain replay the painful memories?
4. What might help you get higher marks according to the passage?
5. Which matters more for creativity, hard work or dreams?

An Interesting Dream
By Li Ming
I have an interesting dream to share with you.
We all know doing exercise makes us healthy. But many of us don’t know which is better, to exercise in the day or at night. Dr. Yang, a famous sleep doctor, advises people to do outdoor exercise for at least 30 minutes a day in the daytime.
Dr. Yang has been doing research on sports and sleep for years. He finds out that those who exercise in natural light for half an hour every day have better sleep and more energy(能量). Dr. Yang himself gets up at 6:30 a.m. Then he usually takes a walk outside. Sometimes, he walks his two dogs in the park in the afternoon with his sunglasses left at home.
Many schools put Dr. Yang’s findings into practice. They made it a rule that students should do outdoor exercise once or twice a day. In some schools, students even formed outdoor running clubs. After some time, most students said they benefited(受益) a lot from outdoor exercise. Now they sleep better and concentrate(集中) more on their studies.
Some students are now thinking about inviting their teachers to join them in their daily runs.
1. According to Dr. Yang, when is it better to exercise, in the day or at night?2. What is Dr. Yang’s research about?
3. What does Dr. Yang usually do after he gets up?
4. How often do students do outdoor exercise in many schools?
5. Who will some students invite to join in their daily runs?

More about Little Free Library:
The idea was started in 2009 in Hudson, Wisconsin, when Todd Bol placed a homemade wooden box in his front yard. The box looked like a one—room schoolhouse. Inside were a dozen or more books free for the taking. It was put there in memory of Todd’s mother, a teacher who loved reading. She had died several years earlier.
His neighbors and friends loved it, so he built several more and gave them away. Later, more people joined Todd in starting the project called Little Free Library.
In 2017, the were more than sixty thousand Little Free Libraries in over eighty countries around the world.

7 . The Value of Negative Results
We all avoid failure(失败), and most of us fear it. However, without failure, progress would be impossible. What does success usually come after? Failure. It seems that one cannot exist(存在)without the other.
Accepting failure is not easy for many, though we are often unwilling to accept failure because our professional fame depends on success.
In fact, one of the business world’s most famous failures became one of its biggest successes, in part because the product’s makers learned from their mistakes.
All in all, there is a lot we can learn by studying mistakes. Perhaps the most important lesson is that failure and success are two sides of the same coin.
A. One truly cannot exist without the other.
B. We are brave enough to face difficulties.
C. In the early 1990s, Apple created a phone called the Apple Newton.
D. The business world already understands the value of negative results.
E. The Apple Newton has won popularity with people all over the world.
F. However, things are slowly changing, especially in business and science.
G. The story of the Apple Newton can teach us an important lesson about failure.
