A set of photos of a boy carrying his tennis rackets in a bamboo basket has gone viral (走红).
Wang Fa, a 14-year-old boy, is a member of the Va ethnic group (佤族) from Yunnan. After winning the under-14 title (冠军) at the ASICS Tennis Junior Tour in Guangzhou, an audience (观众) member from Yunnan gave him the bamboo basket as a gift and the photos were taken.
“The bamboo basket is a typical farming tool of the Va ethnic group. We always carry bamboo baskets when we work in the field. I carried my rackets in this basket to honor my hometown,” Wang said after the match.
Before tennis, Wang was just an ordinary boy from a village. But in 2016, he was chosen by a local club as one of the first 10 local children to learn to play professional tennis. “I was nervous at the beginning because the outside world was so different from my home,” he said, adding that tennis can help him make more friends and get a better education.
Wang, along with other players at the Yunnan Wild Elephants Tennis Club, trained hard to improve his skills and physical strength (体力). The children would get up at 6:30 am. and practice for more than six hours a day. “If it were not for tennis, I would still be helping out my family with farmwork back home,” Wang said.
For Wang, winning the ASICS Tennis Junior Tour title was the beginning of a hopeful future. “I will aim for the top spots (位置) on the professional stage,” he said.

15 dead in building fire in East China

NANJING—15 people were killed and 44 seriously hurt after the building fire broke out on Friday morming, February 23, 2024, in Nanjing, the capital city of East China’s Jiangsu province.
At around 4:39 am that day, the local fire department received an alarm about the fire in a residential building in the Yuhuatai district, which has 6 buildings and the fire broke out in unit 2 of Building 6 with 256 households and 762 residents (居民). Immediately, the local government has ordered all-out efforts to save the injured (伤员) after the fire. 25 fire trucks and 130 firefighters have bcen sent to offer help. They have helped 516 people get out of the building. Unfortunately, 15 of them were dead and 44 were seriously hurt. At around 6 am the firefighters put out the fire which lasted more than 1 hour. All the injured are receiving treatment at hospital.
It’s reported that an electric bicycle parked on the first floor of building 6 caused the fire. In order to prevent similar fire accidents, the government should strengthen the standard management of electric bicycle parking and charging facilities (充电), and strengthen the fire safety education for residents.
