As the society is developing fast, tolerance (容忍) is more important. It will make everyone get on better     1     each other. Getting to know someone may help you understand     2     they do things differently. Something different does not exactly mean that it is bad. Tolerance teaches us to keep     3     temperate (温和的) and open mind.

You need to remember an old saying, “Treat others how you want to be treated”. If you tolerate something, it does not mean that you have to like it. No one is asking you to change who you are or what you believe in. Tolerance just means that you should respect the differences in others     4     not try to make them change.

It is important to practice tolerance, because it will make everyone’s life easier. Learn     5     accept people’s different abilities and interests. The world is very different, and practicing tolerance in your own school and city can help make a difference.

4 . A doctor was once teaching a class of students at a famous hospital in London. An injured (受伤) man was brought in, and the doctor turned to one of his     1     (student) and asked him, “What’s wrong     2     this man?”

7 . Are you nervous?     1     you afraid of speaking to anyone? Do everybody in your class laugh at you? How can you deal with it? The following is my own story:

When I was young, I used to     2     (be) very nervous. I was terrified of speaking to anyone. My classmates often laughed at me. There     3     nothing I could do but to be sad. Later, a speech contest changed my life. It was an English speech contest. My English teacher asked me to take part in the contest.

8 . As a fossil (化石) scientist, Mary Anning (1700—1847) made great c    1     to her field in the 19th century. Her name is now widely known in Britain and even Europe. But that was not always the case.

Anning was a talented woman. She was born in a poor family in Lyme Regis, Britain. She did not receive any p    2     education and had to teach herself geology (地质学) and paleontology (古生物学).

Anning grew up by the sea. At a young age, she showed great i    3     in studying the fossils along the coastline. Anning worked very hard. She went out in all weathers to search for fossils. At the age of 12, she uncovered a skeleton that looked like a crocodile. Then, after ten years of tireless e    4    , she m    5     an amazing discovery. It was a huge fossil of something that the world had never seen before.

They formed the basis for Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species (《物种起源》) .

The BBC’s one-hour documentary (纪录片) Du Fu: China’s Greatest Poet, introduces the Great poet to Western audiences.
