文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍西红柿的好处。

1 . Tomatoes were first planted in 700 AD by Aztecs and Incas. Explorers returning from Mexico introduced the tomato into Europe, where it was first mentioned in 1556. The French called it “the apple of love”,the Germans “the apple of paradise(乐园)”.

Tomatoes are rich in vitamins A and C and fiber, and are cholesterol(胆固醇)free. An average size tomato (148 grams or so) has only 35 calories. Furthermore, new medical research suggests that the consumption of lycopene(番茄红素) ,the stuff that makes tomatoes red,may prevent cancer. Besides, the fruit now appears to have two more health giving benefits. Protection against sunburn and helping keep the skin looking youthful are the latest pluses, a study has found.

Professor Mark Birch-Machin said tomatoes could provide a cheap and easy way of improving health. Researchers at Manchester and Newcastle universities recommend two tomato-based meals a day for health. Possible menus include a glass of tomato juice with breakfast and a salad later or tomato soup for lunch and pasta(意大利面)with a tomato sauce for dinner.

To test the fruit’s ability to protect the skin, ten volunteers were asked to eat five tablespoons of tomato paste mixed with olive oil every day for three months. Another ten had a daily dose of olive oil - minus the tomato paste. The tests showed the tomato-eaters were a third better protected against sunburn at the end of the study than at the start, the British Society for Investigative Dermatology’s annual conference heard.

The researchers stressed, however, that their findings were not an excuse to throw away the sun cream. Professor Lesley Rhodes, a Manchester University dermatologist, said: “People should not think tomatoes in any way can replace sun creams but they may be a good additive.”

4 . You probably take many steps to protect your computer from getting a virus, but what about your cell phone? Cell phones are basically mini-computers, so, believe it or not, they too can get viruses.

“Viruses and malware(恶意软件)should not be a major concern to the average consumer who uses their device to make phone calls, take pictures, and download a few well-known apps from the major app marketplaces,” Tim Katsch Vice President of iDropped said. “If a user is downloading a lot of apps, changing and exploring settings within the device, and visiting a large number of websites from unknown sources, virus and malware protection should be kept on their mind.” If your phone gets a virus it can mess up your data, put random charges on your bill, and get private information such as your bank account number, credit card information, passwords, and your location.

The most common way that you could get a virus on your phone would be through downloading an infected app. Viruses can also get on your phone when you click on strange links or open up an email that contains a virus. Connecting to an unsecured wireless network in a public place is also a way for hackers(黑客)to get private information from your device.

If you're still convinced that your phone might get a virus, there are anti-virus apps that you can download that will constantly scan your phone to make sure it hasn't developed a virus, Apps like these will also check things before you download them to ensure that they are safe. Another tip is to always look over your cell phone bill every month to make sure there aren't charges from apps that you never downloaded.

Technology is getting smarter, but so are hackers, and it's important to always be cautious with anything you do on your phone. Many people store a lot of personal information on their phones, and while that might make life a little more convenient, it can also do a lot of damage if hacked.

1. What can we learn from Tim Katsch's words?
A.The wireless network in the public places is safe to use.
B.Viruses and malware will most probably attack average phones.
C.Downloading a lot of apps will protect your phone from being hacked.
D.The average consumer needn't worry much about a virus or malware.
2. What's the most common way that your phone gets a virus?
A.Downloading an infected app.
B.Clicking on close friends' links.
C.Connecting to your mobile data.
D.Changing your private information.
3. What does the last paragraph convey?
A.Harm set, harm get.
B.Every coin has two sides.
C.Kill two birds with one stone.
D.Technology makes life smarter.
4. What may be the best title for the text?
A.Anti-Virus Apps Make Your Cell Phone Safe?
B.Viruses and Malware Damage Your Cell Phone?
C.Worried About Your Cell Phone Catching a Virus?
D.Ready to Fight Against the Hackers to Your Cell Phone?

5 . When you walk on a sandy beach, it takes more energy than walking down a sidewalk, because the weight of your body pushes into the sand. It turns out that the same thing is true for vehicles driving on roads.

"The weight of the vehicles creates a very shallow indentation(凹陷)in the pavement, and it makes it such that it's continuously driving up a very shallow hill," said Jeremy Gregory, a scientist at MIT. He modeled with his teammates how much energy could be saved, and greenhouse gases avoided, by simply hardening the nation's roads and highways.

And they found that hardening 10 percent of the nation's roads every year could prevent emissions equal to 440 megatons of carbon dioxide over the next 5 decades—that amount is equal to how much CO2 you'd spare the planet by keeping a billion barrels of oil in the ground or by growing 7 billion trees for a decade. It reduces 0.5% of projected transportation emissions over that time period.

As for how to harden roads, Gregory says you could combine small amounts of certain fiber with high technology into paving materials. Or you could pave with specially-made concrete, which is harder than ordinary construction materials.

This system could also be a way to shave carbon emissions without some of the usual barriers. "Usually, when it comes to reducing emissions in the transportation department, you're talking about changing policies related to vehicles and also driver behavior, which involves millions and millions of people---as opposed to changing the way we design and preserve our pavements. That's just on the order of thousands of people who are working in transportation agencies." And when it comes to improving our streets and highways, those agencies are where you might say the rubber meets the road.

1. What's the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.It's valuable to harden roads.
B.It's necessary to reduce carbon dioxide.
C.We should harden roads to protect oil and trees.
D.We should take measures to prevent CO2 emissions.
2. According to Gregory, which could be the possible way to harden roads?
A.Using regular building materials.
B.Creating hi-tech computer models.
C.Changing traditional paving materials.
D.Mixing fiber with special-made concrete.
3. Which of the following is one of the benefits of hardening roads?
A.It profits transportation agencies.
B.It avoids involving too many people.
C.It offers people more job chances.
D.It creates new policies on vehicles.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.How to Harden Roads.B.Sandy Beaches or Sidewalks?
C.Harden Roads to Save Energy.D.Ways to Cut Down Carbon Emissions.

9 . People used to say that British food was boring and bland (乏味的). Nowadays people in Britain have a world of food to choose from.

Travel around London and you'll find food from around the globe. You might come across restaurants and cafes serving foreign food from Armenia, Bangladesh, China, France, etc. Take a look on the Internet and you'll find even more, from Africa, South and Central America and the Pacific. Some restaurants mix different cuisines (烹饪) to create fusion (融合) food. It is similar across the rest of the UK, and growing.

It hasn't always been the case. Once upon a time, other Western Europeans described British food as boring and bland, too heavy and full of fat, with tasteless soups and puddings only the British could love. Sixty years ago, there were only four Indian restaurants in the UK. Now there are over 9,500. There were Italian restaurants in Britain in the nineteenth century but no real Chinese restaurant until the 1930s. The first Indian restaurant opened three hundred years ago.

So why did the British grow bored with their food? Firstly soldiers, administrators and planters who had worked overseas encouraged others to try out new food. In the 1970s, the British began to take holidays abroad and discovered new tastes. And at the same time, people from around the world settled in the UK to live and work, bringing food from home which attracted the British.

Traditionally, Britain's national dish has always been fish and chips, but it is more exotic (异国风味) than that. Many people, including former Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, now consider chicken tikka masala the national dish. It contains chicken in creamy sauce, Indian style. It has come to symbolize (象征) multicultural Britain and could be considered as an example of "fusion" food.

B.Western Europeans used to enjoy British food.
C.Four Indian restaurants opened in the UK three hundred years ago.

3. Which is the reason why British People grew bored with their food?
A.British people working abroad encouraged others to try out new food.
B.Travel offered British people opportunities to change their diet.
C.Non-British people working in the UK brought food from their countries.
D.Above all.
4. Why did Robin Cook consider chicken tikka masala the national dish?
A.Because it was invented by an Indian chef.
B.Because it is a traditional British dish and more exotic.
C.Because it is a kind of fusion food and the sign of a multicultural Britain.
