1 . Founded in 1942,the Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS) competition is America’s oldest and most famous science and mathematics competition. Unique among high school competitions,the Regeneron STS focuses on identifying and inspiring the most promising scientists among the nation’s high school seniors. For the first time in its 78-year history, the competition took place virtually this year in order to keep finalists and their families safe during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Forty finalists were honored during the virtual award ceremony. More than $1.8 million was awarded to the finalists.

This year, Lillian Kay Petersen of New Mexico won the top prize of a quarter million dollars. The 17-year-old invented a simple and remarkable tool for predicting (预测) harvests early in the growing season. She had tested it in Africa and successfully predicted harvests when compared with reported yields. This tool offers an important resource for organisations working on global food aid.

Second place and $175,000 went to Jagdeep Bhatia, 18, of Green Brook, New Jersey, for developing two fast and simple machine learning algorithms (算法) for computer programs. His algorithms do not only ask random (随机的) questions but ask just the right ones. His AI algorithms could help train robots and other devices faster and more easily.

Third place and $150,000 went to Brendan Crotty, 18, of Muskogee, Oklahoma for his project where he designed and built an efficient gas burner that could help reduce the ill impact of industries. His specialized burner system operates at higher temperatures than current industrial burners yet sends out 19 percent less polluting gas.

“Congratulations to the Regeneron Science Talent Search winners. They will be solving the world’s most difficult problems and have a significant impact on the development of the world,” said Maya Ajmera, President and CEO of Society for Science & the Public, Publisher of Science News and 1985 Science Talent Search alumna. “With these finalists in the leading position of scientific and engineering discovery, I know we are in good hands.”

Julie Jeppsen

Wildlife artist Julie Jeppsen is known for her paintings combining realism and atmosphere of wild animals in landscape. Julie is a self-taught artist, whose subject matter is a wide range of animals. She has been involved in art all her life and will continue doing it because it’s a major part of who she is.

4 . My wife, Hannah, and I don’t usually keep houseplants. Anything in pots gets either overwatered or underwatered, but after my diagnosis (诊断) with brain cancer, I loved the idea of having something green around.

A friend gave me what he said was a lucky bamboo plant in a deep-green bowl. We placed the plant in the living room and I told Hannah I wanted to care for it myself. When it didn’t immediately turn yellow or lose leaves, I was pleasantly surprised. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment when I sometimes felt useless. As a family physician, I was used to offering care, not receiving it.

Since my diagnosis, I had to rely on help from other people. Watering the plant, small act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity.

After I recovered from the operation and returned to work, I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it had nearly doubled in height. Both the tree and I were thriving (茁壮成长). Then, without any reason, it began to show signs of stress. Its leaves kept browning and dropping to the floor. Hannah reminded me that we’d seen houseplants die before, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that the plant had become a symbol of my health. I grew increasingly depressed and fearful.

Looking back, I realized I had wrongly connected my caring of the plant—something I could manage—with my own survival—something I couldn’t. Knowing I couldn’t control my fate (命运), my anxiety actually lessened. I began to search online to figure out how to care for my plant. Following the instructions, I transplanted the tree to a larger pot, giving it room to grow. When it was back in the sunny window, we both began to thrive again. Whenever I look at the plant in its new pot, I make a point to think of those who have cared for and supported me.

8 . Young adults often have a lot to learn in school. However, occasionally, the life skills needed for them to become successful outside of school aren’t learned. This may be why the years after high school can sometimes be the most uneasy and tense times for young adults.

Some may say that life skills are to be taught by their household rather than school, but that’s not exactly true. Some students don’t have a parent figure to teach them the necessary moral lessons needed and habitually rely on school to propound them with this essential knowledge. This is why courses of life skills should be set up in schools.

Over the course of history, students generally go to an educational institution of some sort to find themselves spending their entire time learning math and science, instead of what is required for real world-communication, which is through behaviors and manners. Manners are important when having a conversation with family, friends, teachers perhaps or even employers. Schools should find a way to teach manners as a way for students to have respect and be open-minded when it comes to other individuals.

In addition, the handling of finances is one of the major life skills for students. For people, especially young people, to survive in today⁵s financial environment, knowledge of personal finance is a necessity. For example, schools educating students about building credit scores and keeping up with a credit card is helpful. 10 . Here are some pet-friendly universities in the UK and US.

University of Illinois

Students are allowed up to two pets in each apartment, as well as a fish tank of no more than 50 gallons.

To keep a pet, you will need to get approval from the Family & Graduate housing department at the University of Illinois. You will have to provide proof that your pet is up to date with its vaccinations(疫苗), and pay a monthly US$30 pet fee, which is non-refundable(不可退款的).

The students told him they were homesick and missed their pets, which encouraged Binfet to establish B. A. R. K as a way of fighting their loneliness.

University of Oxford

The University of Oxford is famous for its resident pets, who happily wander around college grounds. Many Oxford colleges have their own tortoise and take part in the annual Corpus Christi tortoise race.

Although you are not allowed to keep your own pet as a student, several Oxford colleges hold dog petting and walking therapy sessions.
