1 . There is plenty of entertainment on Sundays in New york.
If the weather is bad you might turn to the Entertainment Section of a newspaper to see what movies are on. Sunday afternoon is good time for seeing film, but movies are rather expensive in New York, so making good choice may take time and care. Read the movie reviews to discover what the critics(批评家) have to say. No one wants to make an expensive mistake, nor does anyone want to stand in line a long time, which is very possible if the movie is new and gets good reviews. If you’re not sure that there is a movie interesting enough for you, look at the museum listings to see what exhibitions are on in town. Some museums are free, others are not.
But if the weather is good, you might glance through the section which lists outdoor activities. Almost every Sunday in the springtime some residential neighborhoods (居民区) will request permission from the Police Department to close off street for “street fairs”.There will be food for sale made by local residents or restaurants, handicrafts (工艺品) for sale, music provided by local band (often high school kids) and perhaps dancing. If the fair is in Little Italy you can expect to find tasty Italian food, pizza in cafes, imported Italian leather goods and traditional Italian music and performances. If the fair is in Chinatown, you can expect to find egg rolls, music played on the erhu (二胡) and dragon dances.

3 . I was blind, but I was ashamed of it if it was known. I refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help. After all, I was a teenager girl, and I couldn’t bear people to look at me and think I was not like them. I must have been a terrible danger on the roads. Coming across me wandering through the traffic, motorists probably would have to step rapidly on their brakes. Apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work.
One evening, I got off the bus about halfway home where I had to change buses, and as usual I ran into something, “I’m awfully sorry,” I said and stepped forward only to run into it again. When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost. This was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. So I carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldn’t stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. No one else was there and I had to try to guess if the bus had arrived.
Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help, I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. In the end, I usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help.
But on this particular evening no one joined me at the stop. It seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. Of course I heard plenty of buses pass or I thought I did. But because l had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, I let them all go by, I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. Then I gave up. I decided to walk on to the next stop.

4 . Uncle Jeremiah sighed. He wondered if he had made the right decision in agreeing to looking after Ant and Cleo over the school holidays while their parents went to London to catch a month-long festival of Shakespeare plays.
Ant and Cleo were having a waste of time staying with their research scientist uncle. They easily bullied (欺负) him into letting them stay up to watch the late-night creature features. It was fun, they said, being scared socked by vampires (吸血鬼), wolfmen and other not-to-nice people. They could handle the late nights; what they couldn’t were the nightmares (梦魇). Watching such fearsome movies as the Curse of the Yeti, the Dread of Dracula (雪人), Fangs of the Wolfman and More Dread of Dracula had resulted in the most terrifying nightmares imaginable.
Once Cleo dreamed she at a dico wearing a fur coat which turned into a yeti that totally ruined her evening by eating her boyfriend. Ant had a frightful dream about being a wolfman, going all hairy and getting locked in the dog house where he was bullied by a brainsick huge dog. And the nightmare that caused Cleo to wake up in a cold sweat was all about a pale, toothy plumber (水暖工)who kept trying to fit a tap to her neck.
Uncle Jeremiah sighed again. He trailed back to bed and buried his head under the pillow. Ant and Cleo settled down to watch The Great, Great Nephew of Frankestein.

5 . Many instructors believe that an informal, relaxing classroom environment is good for learning and innovation. It is not uncommon for students to have easygoing and friendly relationships with their professors. The casual professor is not necessarily a poor one and is still respected by students. Although students may be in a subordinate (从属的) position, some professors treat them as equals. However, no matter how equal professors would like to be, they still are in a position of authority.
Professors may establish social relationships with students outside of the classroom, but in the classroom they maintain the instructor’s role. A professor may have coffee one day with students but the next day expect them to meet a deadline for the submission (提交) of a paper or to be prepared for a discussion or an exam. The professor may give extra attention outside of class to a student in need of help but probably will not treat him or her differently when it comes to evaluating school work. Professors have several roles in relation to students; they may be counselors and friends as well as teachers. Students must realize that when a teacher’s role changes, they must appropriately adapt their behaviour and attitudes.
1. Generally speaking, relationships between students and their professors are ________.A.common | B.friendly | C.poor | D.equal |

6 . Too often young people get themselves employed quite by accident, not knowing what lies in the way of opportunity for promotion, happiness and security. As a result, they are employed in doing jobs that afford them little or no satisfaction. Our school leavers face so much competition that they seldom care what they do as long as they can earn a living. Some stay long at a job and learn to like it; others leave one for another looking for something to suit them. The young graduates who leave the university look for jobs that offer a salary up to their expectation.
Very few go out into the world knowing exactly what they want and realizing their own abilities. The reason behind all this confusion is that there never has been a proper vocational (职业的) guidance in our educational institution. Nearly all feel their way in the dark. Their chief concern when they look for a job is to ask what salary is like. They never bother to think whether they are suited for the job or, even more important, whether the job suits them. Having a job is more than merely providing yourself and your dependants (受赡养者) with daily bread and some money for leisure and entertainment. It sets a pattern of life and, in many ways, determines social status in life, selection of friends, leisure and interest.
In choosing a profession you should first consider the type of work which will suit your interest. Nothing is more pathetic than taking on a job in which you have no interest, for it will not only ruin your talents but also discourage your desire to succeed in life.
1. The difficulty in choosing a suitable job lies mainly in that________.A.certain fierce competition has to be faced |
B.many employee have no working experience |
C.the young people only care about how much they can earn. |
D.schools fail to offer students appropriate vocational guidance |
A.have ruined their talents |
B.have taken on an unsuitable job |
C.think of nothing but their salary |
D.are not aware of their own potential |
A.unsatisfactory | B.miserable |
C.annoying | D.astonishing |
7 . Are you interested in robot-science? What do you think robots are capable of? Let’s have a review of world-leading technology gathered at the World Robot Conference (WRC) 2022.
Technology in agriculture
A fruit-picking robot attracted visitors’ attention. With the help of various sensors and an AI system, the robot can collect fruit according to its ripeness, quality and size. The robot first locates the fruit and then uses sensors to decide whether it is ripe, with a robotic arm picking the fruit gently. The fruit is then categorized, ending up in a basket according to its size. It is said that more robotic technology will be used in agriculture in the future, including robots for daily inspection and weeding.
Robots fighting Covid-19
Medical staff conducting nucleic acid tests often find their work toilsome, especially under the summer heat. A nucleic acid test robot developed by Tsinghua University and a Chinese biotech company was presented at the WRC. It looks like a vending machine, but the robot can collect throat swabs (拭子), process samples, as well as produce and upload the results within 45 minutes. The whole process will not require the involvement of humans or laboratories.
Inventions of the youth
Those visiting the exhibit also witnessed the intelligence of a new generation. Wang Zirun, a junior student at the school, designed a three-dimensional parking facility model. Since there are usually too few parking spaces in older residential areas, Wang’s work aims to fit more cars into current parking spots. The facility works like a sky wheel with six parking spots. When cars need to be picked up, the facility rotates steadily, placing the car on the ground.
1. Where is the text probably taken from?A.A travel brochure. |
B.A technology textbook. |
C.A science magazine. |

B.The WRC is intended to inspire the intelligence of a young generation. |
C.All the inventions mentioned have been put into practical use. |
D.Human can be replaced by the robot in the future. |
8 . France is a country of great food, great fashion, and great art. It is also the birthplace of various painting movements and has been home to the world's most influential painters.
Claude Monet
Claude Monet started the Impressionist movement that completely changed the face of French painting in the second half of the 19th century. He first started out with selling charcoal pictures in Paris and started painting with oil after meeting Eugene Boudin. Eugene, who taught him to use oil paints, also encouraged him to paint outdoors. Later he mastered the technique and painted with his own style.
Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh was a post-Impressionist French painter of Dutch origin, whose work had a huge influence on the 20th century art. His early works consisted more of somber(忧伤的)earth tones. However, influenced by Gauguin, Monet, Pissarro, and Bernard, he adopted brighter colors in his works, started experimenting with various techniques and formed his own one. Having produced more than 2,000 works of art, the artist sold only one painting during his lifetime-The Red Vineyard at Arles.
Edouard Manet
As one of the first artists to paint modern life, he began to paint in his own style, maintaining some of Couture's technique like the use of thick lines and dark colors. He was greatly influenced by Claude Monet and Berthe Morisot, which can be seen in his use of light shades. Most of his paintings show scenes from daily life on the streets of Paris.
Camille Pissarro
In his early years, Pissarro painted scenes of rivers or paths from memory. After meeting Paul Cezanne, who shared his interest of painting in a more realistic style, he changed his course to Impressionism. During his career, he experimented with various styles and formed his own one.

9 . Have you ever run into a careless cell phone user on the street? Perhaps they were busy talking, texting or checking updates on WeChat without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of this new “species” of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name — phubbers (低头族).
Recently, a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities bury themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty woman takes selfie (自拍) in front of a car accident site, and a father loses his child without knowing about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events eventually leads to the destruction of the world.
Although the ending sounds overstated, the damage phubbing can bring is real. Your health is the first to bear the effect and result of it. “Constantly bending your head to check your cell phone could damage your neck,” Guangming Daily quoted doctors as saying, “the neck is like a rope that breaks after longterm stretching.” Also, staring at cell phones for long periods of time will damage your eyesight gradually, according to the report.
But that’s not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from your friends and family. At reunions with family or friends, many people tend to stick to their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange atmosphere, Beijing Evening News reported.
It can also cost you your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death, suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.
1. For what purpose does the author give the example of a cartoon in Para.2?A.To advertise the cartoon made by students. |
