文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍的是社区青年俱乐部的活动以及现状。

1 . Our local Community Youth Club is a very popular organization with young people in my town. I have been a member for four years now and I’ve taken part in a lot of interesting projects. These include fun activities such as holiday camps and discos. We have organized sports competitions and we even made a video.

But it isn’t all just enjoyment, we have also started doing social work to help people in our neighbourhood. We have organized activities for small children during the holidays. We have also formed a social support group to help young people stop smoking.

We are particularly proud of the most recent group we have created. It organizes regular visits to the local old people’s home. This idea came from a school visit to an old people’s home. My class spent an afternoon at a home and everyone found the visit very rewarding.

The old people at the home were very excited by our visit. They were very talkative and they told us their personal stories. During our visit, the home was filled with the sound of laughter. We sang songs and played games with the old people and had tea together. But we realized that life wasn’t always easy. Some of them were in poor health and were very unhappy. They couldn’t go outside and the visits by children brought some sunshine into their lives.

Many young people like me do not live with our grandparents and we have very little contact with elderly people. As a result, many young people don’t know what they are like and we have a lot of wrong ideas about them. We have little or no idea of the kind of lives they lead in their homes. After this visit, my friends and I decided we should do something to help improve the quality of their lives.

Since the creation of our visiting group, over twenty volunteers have joined us. Up to now, we have organized three group evenings and a concert. But it is the individual (单独的) visits which are the most important. Club members regularly visit old people and everyone finds the experience rich and rewarding.

1. As for Community Youth Club’s future, the author’s attitude to it is ________.
A.positiveB.negative
C.neutralD.indifferent
2. The writer ________.
A.works at an old people’s home
B.lives with her grandparents
C.lives in an old people’s home

3. The Community Youth Club________.

B.has made a video about life in an old people’s home

A.are not interested in how old people live
B.do not want to get to know old people
C.have very little contact with old people
D.live with their grandparents

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了J.K. Rowling的新书“The Ickabog”的故事情节以及特点。

2 . J-K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, said that she had kept a fairy tale on her bookshelf for almost ten years. The story is called The Ickabog. She said that the story was the one that she wrote years ago in between writing the Harry Potter novels. She stressed, “It isn’t Harry Potter and it doesn’t include magic. This is an entirely different story.”

Ms Rowling had always thought of the story as one that belonged to her children since she read it to them when they were younger. In recent weeks, she’s worked to bring the book to a final version.

Several weeks ago, the author said she came up with the idea of publishing the novel for free on her website to amuse children who were stuck at home because of lockdown (活动限制). She discussed the idea with her children, who are now teenagers, and they thought it was a good idea.

The Ickabog is a fairy tale set in a kingdom known as “Cornucopia”. The author described The Ickabog as “a story about the misuse of power”. She said the story wasn’t written about anything going on now but could be about any time or any country. And she hoped children could learn the results of people misusing their positions.

Because the book was first written as a read-aloud one, Ms. Rowling thought it was well-suited to being published in parts on the Internet. The book will be officially published in November as a regular book, as well as an eBook and an audiobook. The money from the sales of those books will go to support groups that have been hit hard by the pandemic (流行病). Many fans said that they liked the idea. And they thought what J,K, Rowling was doing would make The Ickabog a second Harry Potter.

1. What did J.K. Rowling say about The Ickabog?
A.It took her almost ten years to finish it.
B.It wasn’t good enough to get published.
C.It might be a book suitable for all her fans.
D.It didn’t keep the style of her well-known works.
2. What did J.K. Rowling intend to do with The Ickabog later?
A.Show it on her website for free.
B.Keep it until her children grow up.
C.Rewrite it according to her children’s advice.
D.Sell it to support the bored children during the lockdown.
3. What does J.K. Rowling want to tell children through The Ickabog?
A.Caring for the weak is important.B.They should respect their own cultures.
C.They should learn from powerful people.D.Using power in the wrong way can be harmful.
4. What does the underlined part in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.J.K. Rowling’s good action will make The Ickabog a best-seller.
B.J.K. Rowling hopes her new book will attract young readers.
C.The Ickabog will become more popular than Harry Potter.
D.The Ickabog has something to do with Harry Potter.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了英国泰晤士河南岸的摩天轮——伦敦眼。

3 . The London Eye, formerly known as the Millennium Wheel, is on the South Bank of the River Thames. At an overall height of 135 meters, the London Eye was the world’s tallest Ferris wheel from 1999, when it was built, until 2006, when it was surpassed (超过) by the Star of Nanchang, in Nanchang, China. It is one of London’s most popular tourist attractions.

What is now called the London Eye originated as a work sent by David Marks and Julia Barfield of Marks Barfield Architects in 1993 to a competition. The competition is supported by The Sunday Times and Great Britain’s Architecture Foundation, for a new landmark in memory of the millennium (千禧年) in London. Although no winner was declared, Marks and Barfield carried out the development of the project themselves and found the site where the wheel now stands. Most of the money was provided by British Airways.

Construction began in 1998, and the wheel was put together over the river before being pulled up.The London Eye was ceremonially “opened” by Prime Minister Tony Blair on December 31, 1999, but didn’t admit its first paying passenger until March 9,2000. Originally scheduled to be taken apart after five years, it was kept in place because of continued popularity. In 2006 an LED lighting system was installed in order to make the wheel more noticeable after dark.

The wheel rests on two supports, which are fixed firmly to a foundation on the riverbank and lean (倾斜) out over the river at an angle of 65°. The power to turn the wheel is sent through rubber tires that are placed on the base of the structure. Placed on the wheel are 32 eggshaped “capsules”, as the cabins that carry the passengers are called. Their number agrees with the 32 boroughs (自治市) that (together with the City of London) make up Greater London. Each capsule can hold as many as 25 passengers. The wheel moves so slowly — two circles per hour — that it needn’t stop for passengers to get on or off, except for those with disabilities.

1. When was the London Eye the tallest Ferris wheel in the world?
A.In 1993.B.In 1998.
C.In 2004.D.In 2016.
2. Why did Marks and Barfield design the London Eye?
A.To compete for a prize.
B.To memorialize the start of their business.
C.To attract more visitors to the River Thames.
D.To realize their dream of riding on a Ferris wheel.
3. What happened to the London Eye in 2006?
A.It leant out more than 65°.
B.It was officially open to the public.
C.It was decorated with brighter lighting.
D.It faced the threat of being taken apart.
4. What does the last paragraph imply?
A.Greater London consists of 32 cities.
B.The London Eye spends an hour spinning around once.
C.Disabled people are forbidden to get on the London Eye.
D.The London Eye can hold eight hundred passengers at most.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍新的研究推翻了2015年的一个研究,表示火星上的深色印记代表的是沙流,而不是原来以为的水,不可以作为火星上有生命存在的证据。

8 . A new study suggests that dark markings on the planet Mars represent sand—not water. The research in 2015 suggested that lines on some Martian hills were evidence of water.Yet American scientists now say these lines appear more like dry flows of sand. If water is present, it is likely to be a small amount.Water in liquid forms would be necessary for microbial(微生物的) life.

NASA, the American space agency, said more research is needed. Michael Meyer is the lead scientist for NASA’s Mars’ exploration programme. He noted that the latest study does not reject the presence of water. But he admitted, “It just may not be as exciting as the idea of rivers going down the sides of cliffs(悬崖).”

The new findings come from a team led by Colin Dundas of the United States Geological Survey. His team measured 151 of these lines in 10 areas. Most of the lines end with slopes between 28 degrees and 35 degrees. These measurements are similar to active sand dunes(沙丘) on both Mars and Earth. A small covering of dust that moves and sometimes becomes lighter might help explain the markings. They usually appear in the Martian summertime, and then disappear until the next year. If these lines are dry, this suggests that recent Mars has not had large volumes of liquid water. Dundas and his research team say that many questions remain.

“I still think that Mars has a great potential for having had life early on in its history,” Meyer said. “As long as that’s true, we also have a reasonable possibility of life still being on Mars. It just happens to be cryptic or well hidden.”

NASA currently has no robotic vehicle—either on Mars or in development—with the ability to climb steep slopes. The lack of such equipment has engineers coming up with ideas like Martian helicopters or planes without pilots.

1. What do American scientists find on Mars now according to their study?
A.A lot of little life.
B.An amount of water.
C.Some Martian hills.
D.Dark markings are sand.
2. When do the markings come out?
A.In Martian spring.
B.In Martian summer.
C.In Martian autumn.
D.In Martian winter.
3. What’s Meyer’s opinion about having life on Mars?
A.Doubtful.B.Trustful.
C.Indifferent.D.Objective.
4. What does the underlined word “cryptic” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Undiscovered.B.Strange.
C.Magical.D.Icy.

TUESDAY AND THURSDAY

WEAVER HOUSE GYM

FIRST LESSON FREE

Hardly any of us have experienced real violence, but, over the last few years, attacks on innocent people have increased. Each of us has some ability to defend ourselves, and by learning a form of self-defence, we are not only increasing that ability, but also doing something to build our own sense of respect. Karate will show you a lot of simple and effective techniques to protect yourself, giving you increase self-confidence.

Far too many people think martial arts (武术) are about violence. Martial arts training is based on a lot of respect, self-discipline, self-control and non-violence. We learn basic etiquette (礼节), courtesy (礼貌) and tolerance. Good manners and consideration for others are expected at all times.

Karate is the practice of blocking and striking techniques for the purpose of self-defence, health and self-development. Karate exercises the entire body. Techniques are practised on both sides of the body, therefore muscle imbalances do not occur and the strength, coordination, flexibility and agility of both sides of the body are improved. Regular training in Karate improves the body’s physical endurance and flexibility. It also helps concentration and produces the mental calm and assurance that come from knowing we can defend ourselves.

Karate has many benefits but they do not come easily or overnight. Training requires ongoing commitment and hard work. Some of you will give up, but a few of you will get your black belt.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。一项研究表明,狗朝不同的方向摆动尾巴取决于它们的情绪,这一发现有助于人们通过摇尾变化来判断狗的心情。

10 . Dogs wag(摇摆) their tails in different directions depending on whether they are excited and wanting to move forward or threatened and thinking of moving back, a study has found.

Researchers in Italy examined the tail wagging behavior of 30 dogs, catching their responses to a range of stimuli(刺激物) with video cameras. To conduct the study they chose 15 male dogs and 15 female ones aged between one and six. The dogs were all family pets whose owners had allowed them to take part in the experiment at Bari University. The dogs were placed in a large wooden box with an opening at the front to allow them to view various stimuli. They were tested one at a time.

The researchers led by Professor Giorgio Vallortigara of the University of Trieste found that when the dogs were shown their owners—a positive experience—their tails wagged energetically to the right side. When they were shown an unfamiliar human they wagged to the right, but with somewhat less enthusiasm. The appearance of a cat again caused a right-hand side wag, although with less excitement again. The appearance of a large unfamiliar dog, similar to a German shepherd dog, changed the direction of tail wagging to the left. Researchers supposed the dog was thinking of moving back. When the dogs were not shown any stimuli, they tended to wag their tails to the left, suggesting they preferred company. While the changes in the tail wagging were not easily noticed without the aid of a video, it was thought that the findings could help people judge the mood (心情) of dogs. Computer and video systems, for example, could be used by professional dog trainers to determine the mood of dogs that they were required to approach.

1. Why were the video cameras used to catch the dogs’ responses?
A.It was easier to catch the dogs’ response changes in the tail wagging.
B.The dogs were put in the wooden boxes and tested one at a time.
C.They enabled the dogs’ owners to know about their dogs’ habit.
D.The dogs wagged their tails in different directions when they were in different moods.
2. When there were no stimuli, the dogs would .
A.wag their tails to the left
B.wag their tails to the right
C.not wag tails at all
D.wag tails to the left and then to the right
3. What does the underlined word “they” refer to in the last paragraph?
A.The dogs.B.The trainers.
C.The systems.D.The researchers.
4. What’s the purpose of doing the experiment?
A.To train dogs for their owners.
B.To help people judge the mood of dogs.
C.To help dogs find company.
D.To help people choose their pet dogs.
