文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。社会全年都需要志愿者,这些志愿者不会出现在你的社交媒体上,他们不会获奖,也没有人在当地报纸上报道他们,但他们是英雄,文章呼吁我们行动起来。

2 . My busiest period comes from November each year, when I will receive a number of emails and texts from friends who want to volunteer with their families on Thanksgiving as a way to give back. I also field phone calls from organizations who want to donate to local programs that provide Thanksgiving meals.

As an official who still works in the nonprofit sector, however, I also feel deeply anxious because I know the other 51 weeks of the year, these critical programs that provide food access to residents in need are starving for both volunteers and donations. Hunger is a year round problem, and each week volunteers are the necessary part to ensure that programs are able to serve the community.

At Food For Free, we rely on about 100 volunteers per week, and each of those volunteers is extremely important to providing fresh, healthy food to people in the Greater Boston area who need it. School children who take backpacks of food home on Fridays, community college students who rely on our Family Meals program to get stronger in class, elderly and disabled residents who receive twice monthly deliveries of food to their doors through our Home Delivery program, — they all rely on us ensuring enough volunteers show up to do the work. These volunteers don’t show up in your social media feeds, they don’t win awards and no one writes about them in the local newspapers. But they are heroes. And you can be too.

If everyone made a promise to volunteer once a month, or even once a quarter, I know that we could reduce some of the anxiety these organizations feel, as a more reliable volunteer network allows them to focus on helping people, not filling volunteer slots.

You can look through our list of a few organizations who are doing critical work in Cambridge to address food insecurity. Offer your time to an organization, they will be deeply grateful—and I am going to bet that you will feel pretty good about yourself too.

A.To ask something related emails.

A.the need for fresh food
B.the duty of Food For Free
C.the value of voluntary work
D.the difficult life of local people
3. What should we learn from the volunteers?
A.Showing up in social media.
B.Winning some useful awards.
C.Spreading our life stories.
D.Serving the poor for nothing.
4. What is the author’s aim to write the passage?
A.To call readers to be volunteers.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了圈养繁殖项目促进了加州秃鹰数量的增加,而作者通过与美国鱼类和野生动物管理局合作,从事拍摄秃鹰的工作。

4 . Finding a California condor in the wild would be the most unusual treat. perhaps even more unusual than finding a wolf in Yellowstone National Park. In fact, the wolf was what opened my eyes to the fact that humans could bring an animal back to the place where it had disappeared.

In 1987, there were only 27 California condors left, none of which were in the wild, only in captive breeding programs, It was those breeding programs that contributed to their population rise, enough that by 1991 some of them could be freed into the wild.

Still, the hope of seeing a California condor, which remains an endangered species, is very low, let alone getting a photo of one. California condor population dropped mostly due to human factors, such as poaching and living areas destruction-these are challenges California condors still face today.

Although this is just a bird’s-eye view of the challenges California condors face and there are many others, it is part of why the opportunity to work with the US Fish and Wildlife Service team and their partners helping their recovery is so special to me as a photographer. I am not only able to photograph the birds in their wild living areas, but also understand and record how difficult the work is of those people on the front lines of the protection.

I am grateful for the work of the team, and my hope is that California condor population will continue to rise allowing future generations an opportunity I never had when I first got here-to look to the sky and see one flying around.

1. What helped the increase of the California condor population in 1987?
A.Rules for hunters.B.Captive breeding programs.
C.The improved natural environment.D.The enlargement of wild living areas.
2. What does the author say about taking photos of a California condor in the wild?
A.It is difficult.B.It is easy.C.It is boring.D.It is dangerous.
3. What did the author do when working with the US Fish and Wildlife Service team?
A.He guided ways for them.B.He made records by photos.
C.He helped the birds to recover.D.He rebuilt the birds’ living areas.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.New Way, New HopeB.Wolves and California Condors

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了园艺是一个用来锻炼的好方式。

5 . A lot of people find it difficult to do exercise regularly, even though they know it’s good for their physical and mental (身心上的) health. Yet keeping on a workout routine doesn’t necessarily go to the gym or run around your neighborhood. Gardening is a great example of a popular hobby that can be used as a workout.

Nashville resident Tom Adkinson, 72, is on board with the idea of gardening to stay fit. He has three gardens, which he uses primarily to grow tomatoes, sweet banana peppers and okra. Like traditional exercise, Adkinson does a lot of preparation before gardening, and then he spends hours watering and weeding (除草) all three gardens, involving bending and stretching, which he compares to performing garden yoga.

“It is wise of Adkinson to do so. Even though gardening may not appear difficult, using the body in new ways can make you hurt if you don’t warm up beforehand,” said Zeller, who teaches at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County in New Jersey.

Working in your garden just two hours a week could improve your mood. And the communal gardening, which is done by a number of people as a group in communities and schools, provides social benefits that can reduce stress and help fight against loneliness and even dementia according to studies.

“With all these benefits, gardening for fitness will be a trend (趋势) in the coming year,” announced Mandal, CEO of the fitness coaching app Future, “Our users at Future have already been asking their coaches to add gardening and landscaping activities into their routines because it’s easy to get and fit into their lifestyle.”

1. What do the underlined words “on board with” mean in paragraph 2?
A.In support of.B.At the risk of.
C.Under the control of.D.In opposition to.
2. What did Zeller probably suggest doing before gardening?
A.Having a good rest.
B.Getting enough water ready.
C.Doing warm-up exercise.
D.Preparing tools for weeding.
3. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.Tips for gardening.
B.The benefits of gardening.
C.The process of garden management.
D.The difference between personal and group gardening.
4. Which activity may be added to the app Future according to Mandal?

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了第一位女性诺贝尔和平奖获得者Bertha von Suttner。

6 . Bertha von Suttner received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905 — she was the first woman to receive it, and also the inspiration for the creation of the Nobel Prize.

She met Alfred Nobel, a rich millionaire, by answering his newspaper ad for a secretary. Although she only worked for him for a few weeks, she remained good friends with Alfred Nobel for the next 20 years. When she became involved in the peace movement in Europe, she promised to keep Nobel informed of its progress. When Alfred Nobel died in 1896, his will included the establishment of a peace prize, thanks to Bertha von Suttner’s influence.

Bertha von Suttner was born in an aristocratic military family, but she spent the second half of her life working for peace. She wrote books, attended peace conferences, gave lectures and helped organize peace societies in Austria, Germany and Hungary, as well as the International Peace Bureau in Switzerland. Her novel, Lay Down Your Arms, was one of the most influential antiwar books of all time, and helped to make her a leader of the peace movement in Europe. Its end to war theme was both the ambition and the most important goal in the life of this great woman.

Bertha von Suttner worked so hard for peace because she believed that a terrible war would break out in Europe if nations didn’t work hard to establish lasting peace institutions. She made many major achievements for a more peaceful world, but two months after she died, World War I broke out. A hundred years after she won the Nobel Peace Prize, nations still seem to view war as a choice to work out their problems. But like Bertha von Suttner did, many today are working hard around the world to help strengthen peace institutions and spread the idea that it’s time to put an end to war.

1. Bertha von Suttner
A.worked for Alfred Nobel for 20 years
B.helped Alfred Nobel draw up his will
C.persuaded Alfred Nobel to join the peace movement
D.inspired Alfred Nobel to establish the Nobel Peace Prize
2. Paragraph 3 is mainly about Bertha von Suttner’s
A.efforts and contributions to the peace movementB.family background and work experiences
C.writing career and life experiencesD.ambition and goals in life
3. What do we know about Lay Down Your Arms?
A.It was based on a true story.B.It recorded Bertha von Suttner’s daily life.
C.It was about an aristocratic military family.D.It showed Bertha von Suttner’s wish for peace.
4. What can we infer from the last Paragraph?
A.Bertha von Suttner’s fight for peace is still shared by many.
B.Bertha von Suttner failed to found peace institutions.
C.Bertha von Suttner successfully predicted a war.
D.Bertha von Suttner lost her life in World War I.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文,文章主要说明人们在年老之后更多快乐更少担心,幸福感有所增加的现象。

9 . Here are two interesting questions. Are you very happy with your life now? Are people happier as they get older? A study found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after age 50. In fact, it-found that by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were at 18.

The finding came from a Gallup survey of more than 340,000 adults between the age of 18 and 85 in the United States.

Arthur Stone, a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.

Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. But the people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties. The survey also found that men and women had similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did.

So why would happiness increase with age? One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.

The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.

The original goal of the study was to confirm the popular belief that aging is connected with increased sleep problems. The survey did find an increase during middle age, especially in women. But except for that, people reported that they felt their sleep quality, improved as they got older.

1. Based on the study, which adult age group experiences the most stress?
A.Adults in their 20s.B.Adults in their 50s.
C.Adults in their 70s.D.Adults in their 80s.
2. What conclusion can be drawn from the text?
A.Stress levels significantly decrease as people age.
B.Young adults face less stress due to better health.
C.People in their 70s experience the greatest happiness.
D.Women of different ages tend to experience more negative emotions than men.
3. What could be a likely reason for older people feeling happier?
A.The elderly don't have the burden of daily hard work.
B.The elderly have ample financial resources.
C.The elderly feel more grateful for their lives.
D.The elderly often focus more on negative events for longer periods.
4. What is TRUE according to the findings of the study?
A.Aging leads to increased sleep issues.
B.The older one gets, the poorer the sleep quality.
C.Sleep quality declines in middle age but improves in later years.
D.There's a link between sleep and happiness.
