文章大意:这是一篇议论文。作者认为尽管手机对我们来说很重要,但抛开手机的日子又是另外一种风景,我们可以试着抛开手机享受生活。

1 . I am trying to muster (鼓起) the courage to toss away my mobile phone to enjoy a more peaceful and ring-free life.

Can you imagine not having your mobile phone? In our high-tech, in-a-hurry age, a cell-free life is a hard concept to swallow. Our mobile phones can now access the Internet, and many people feel the need to express their every thought on their blog pages. If I gave up my cellphone, people would think I was mad.

I wish I had the strength to toss away my technology. I have an office phone, a home phone, an email and if people want to contact me, they can. If I’m out, people can leave a message. Do they really need to find me 24/7? However, I’m a bit like Frodo in the movie Lord of the Rings. The power of the ring is too strong and I can’t let it go.

Mobile phones have become necessary tools in our busy life. For most people, they hold all contacts and many of us don’t write up address books any more. The latest phones carry our music, pictures, movies and everything else. We feel lost without this device and when we do misplace it, we feel cut off from our fellow.

“Where have you been?” said a friend, who saw me a week after I lost my cellphone, “I tried calling you, but you disappeared. You disappeared off the face of the Earth.” See, when you don’t have a mobile phone, you don’t exist.

I’m not really going to toss my mobile phone away, in fact. We humans are such social animals and mobile phones serve us well. So in 2009, I’ve decided not to serve my mobile phone. Like all machines, I can always turn it off.

1. What does the underlined phrase “toss away” mean?
A.give awayB.get awayC.break awayD.throw away
2. The writer mentions Frodo to________.
A.show it is difficult to get rid of the mobile phone
B.show how much he likes Frodo
C.suggest a cell-free life is what he wants
D.introduce a film character to us
3. What do we know about mobile phones in the 4th paragraph?
A.Mobile phones can do anything for us.
B.Mobile phones have become very important in our life.
C.We could not live without mobile phones.
D.We would be cut off by our fellow without mobile phones.
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The writer is not really going to toss his mobile phone away.
B.When you don’t have a mobile phone, you don’t exist.
C.The writer decides not to serve his mobile phone.
D.We humans can control ourselves and machines.

3 . As Christmas approaches, towns and cities around the UK are preparing for a very British celebration.

The switching on of a town’ s Christmas lights has become an increasingly competitive event over the years, with some councils (会议) spending lots of money to attract A-list famous persons to do the honors.

The American singer Mariah Carey flew to London in November to switch on the lights at one of the city’s biggest shopping centers, while Jim Carrey lighted Oxford Street and promoted his new film at the same time.

Traffic in the historic English city of Bath was brought to a halt as thousands of fans crowded to see the Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage conducted the switching-on ceremony.

Some celebrations do not go according to the plan, as was seen in Birmingham when dozens of people were injured as the famous British boy band JLS took the stage.

Not all towns can afford to bring in an internationally-known star, so many switchon ceremonies are handled by ex-TV talent show competitors.

Pantomime (圣诞童话剧) stars are also much in demand at this time of year, as they aim to promote their Christmas shows.

But if your council hasn’t got the budget to bring in a famous face, what are the cheaper alternatives?

A town in the west of England chose to let the public decide by giving their suggestions online. The result: a 21-year-old DIY store worker was given the honor.

“I was amazed and delighted to be asked,” said Scott Parker, “it’s just a special gift and not something I’d, ever thought about before.”

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了照片的作用。

4 . Photographs are everywhere. They decorate (装饰) the walls of homes and are used in stores for sales of different goods. The news is filled with pictures of fires, floods, and special events. Photos record the beauties of nature. They can also bring things close that are far away. Through photos, people can see wild animals, cities in foreign lands, and even the stars in outer space. Photos also tell stories.

Reporting the news through photos is called photojournalism. At times photojournalists tell their stories through a single picture. At other times, they use a group of pictures to tell a story. Each picture is like a chapter in a book, which can do more than record the facts. It can also be a strong force for social change.

Jacob Riis was among the first photojournalists. He took pictures of parts of New York City where the poor lived. Riis believed that poverty (贫穷) caused crime, and he used photos to help him prove his point. A few years later, the photos of small children working in factories by Lewis Hine shocked the public. Hine’s pictures helped bring about laws to protect such children.

Hundreds of pictures may have to be taken in order to get one or two really good photos. It takes science to have the photo come out clearly and art to make a photo that has a good design and expresses feeling. Photojournalists make an actual record of what they see. A photo, however, can be both a work of art and an actual record. It can record an important event as a beautiful or exciting picture.

As historical and artistic documents (文献) , photos can become more important over time. Today photojournalists still have their pictures appear in newspapers and magazines. They also publish (发表) them in books and on the Internet.

D.People prefer reading news with pictures.
4. The text is mainly about        .

5 . My 17-year-old daughter went off to college and having her away from home brought back memories of watching Peter Pan when she was little. In the classic TV production, one scene in particular impressed me: when Mrs. Darling puts her children into bed. As she turns off the last of the night light, she takes one last look at the bedroom and says, “Dear night lights protect my sleeping children.” As a mother, I know how much she loves her children.

It has been several weeks since we took our daughter to college and she seems to be adjusting well after a short period of homesickness. For us, though, it’s another story. Like most parents, I love checking in on my children at night. But now she’s gone, and I find night times the hardest. I miss her most at night.

In my neighborhood, most of the parents whose kids are off to college are dealing with similar melancholy. My husband is filled with anxiety. One friend talked about getting this sick feeling in her stomach as she prepared for the college drop-off. We complained that many of us were too busy to truly enjoy being with our children while we had them.

For us moms, seeing Toy Story 3 only made the sadness worse as we watched the character Andy, who is the same age as our kids, say goodbye to his childhood as he prepares to leave for college. And it’s not just “first-time” parents like me. Two moms who have kids already well into college said the separation didn’t get any easier. “You feel like something has been taken away from inside you,” said one of them.

I imagine things will get easier with time, especially as I see my daughter adjust to college life. Meanwhile, as I keep my cell phone close to me in bed and text my daughter goodnight and sweet dreams every night, I like to think at messages serve as a night light that keeps her safe.

1. The writer was deeply impressed by the scene in Peter Pan because ________.
A.she watched the scene with her daughter
B.the scene was very exciting and interesting
C.the scene taught her and her daughter a good lesson

A.didn’t get used to the change for a long time
B.often cried as she missed her daughter so much
C.realized she hadn’t done enough for her daughter
D.failed to have a good sleep every night
3. What is the underlined word “melancholy” in Paragraph 3 similar in meaning to?
A.Happiness.B.Anger.
C.Sadness.D.Excitement.
4. According to the last paragraph, why did the writer keep her cell phone close to her in bed?
A.To call her daughter any time.B.To wait for her daughter’s calls.
C.To say good night to her daughter.D.To wait for her daughter’s messages.

8 . There is no better way to enjoy Scottish traditions than going fishing and tasting a little whisky(威士忌) at a quiet place like the Inverlochy Castle. When Queen Victoria visited there in 1873 she wrote in her diary, “I never saw a lovelier spot,” And she didn't even go fishing.

Scotland is not easily defined. In certain moments, this quiet land of lakes and grass mountains changes before your very eyes. When evening gently sweeps the hillside into orange, the rivers, teeming with fish, can turn into streams of gold. As you settle down with just a people and a basket on the bank of River Orchy, near the Inverlochy Castle, any frustration will float away as gently as the circling water. It's just you and purple, pink, white flowers, a perfect harmony. If you are a new comer to fishing, learning the basics from a fishing guide may leave you with a lifetime's fun. For many, fishing is more than a sport; it is an art.

Scotland offers interesting place where you can rest after a long day's fishing. Set against a wild mountain and hidden behind woodland, the beautiful Inverlochy Castle Hotel below the Nevis is a perfect place to see the beauty of Scotland's mountains. Ben Nevis is the highest of mountains, and reaching its 1342-metre top is a challenge. But it's not just what goes up that matters; what comes down is unique. More than 900 metres high, on the mountain's north face, lies an all-important source of pure water. Its name comes form the Gaelic language "usqueb" or "water of life"; and it is the single most important ingredient(原料) in Scotland's best known whisky.

A.the queen is rich in tour experience
B.the Castle is a good place to go in Scotland

2. How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed?
A.By giving descriptions.B.By following time order.

9 . Dear Sir,
I am writing to express my concern about the plans to build a motorway near our village.
Haldersham is one of the loveliest villages in England. It is peaceful and quiet, and it is situated in a very attractive valley. There are also several beautiful countryside walks in the surroundings, with a view of many rare trees and plants.
Most of the people who live in Haldersham have moved here from other places, often from London and other big cities. They have bought houses here to live in a place far away from the noise and the stress of the big city. They paid a lot of money for their houses, but they knew they would get a high quality of life for it.
If the planned motorway is built, life in Haldersham will change greatly. There will be a lot of noise around us, and nobody will want to go on the walks. House prices will certainly go down, because nobody will want to buy houses in a place close to a motorway. Haldersham will become an ugly place.
I don’t think any of the people living in this beautiful village want that, and we all believe exposure to noise pollution can have a direct influence on our health. So, let’s all tell the politicians who support the motorway plans what we think about them!
Yours faithfully,
Hilary Riley

3. What’s the purpose of the letter?
A.To give an introduction of Haldersham.
B.To show grateful thanks to the politicians.
C.To express disapproval about the motorway.
D.To offer suggestions on building the motorway.
