文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要列举了四个人学习英语所遇到的困难。

1 . These people are studying English. However, they are now facing some problems.

I am Pablo. I work 50 hours a week as a taxi driver, so I talk to people all day. They understand me, but I know I make a lot of mistakes. No one corrects me. My vocabulary is strong. Grammar is my problem. I’m trying to change little by little. For example, I don’t use the past tense(时态). I always say, “I drive him to the office this morning” instead of “I drove him to the office this morning”.

My name is Maria Luisa. I’m teaching myself English, and I’m good at grammar. However, it’s really difficult to find ways to practise English. I live in an area where everyone speaks my language. My neighbours and friends speak Spanish. I can speak Spanish in the supermarket and at the post office.

I am Li Ping. I understand the grammar and the readings in my class and I think my writing is good, but I’m very nervous when I speak English. I don’t want to make any mistakes because I’m afraid people will think that I’m stupid. Also, my pronunciation isn’t good. When I speak, people often say, “What? Say that again.”

I am Yoshi. I have been in the United States for one year. I’m studying hard and I know grammar well, but the vocabulary is very difficult. When I listen, I don’t understand many of the words. When I try to read, there are three or four new words in every sentence. I feel discouraged.

1. Who may say, “I go to bed late last night”?
A.Yoshi.B.Maria Luisa.C.Pablo.D.Li Ping.
2. What would be the best advice for Maria Luisa?
A.Try to have a wide vocabulary.B.Develop a good knowledge of grammar.
C.Read as many English books as possible.D.Make friends with English-speaking people.
3. Why do people find it hard to understand Li Ping’s English?
A.She speaks at a very fast speed.B.Her voice is very low.
C.Her grammar is terrible.D.She can’t pronounce words in English correctly.
4. What can we learn about Yoshi?
A.He has a very small vocabulary.B.He was born in the United States.
C.He has learned English for years.D.He is very good at listening.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章分析了为什么年轻人不喜欢结交新朋友,并鼓励人们认识新朋友。

2 . When you set a foot outside of your door to drop trash, go to a social event or go for a walk, thoughts like “I hope I don’t see anyone I know” or “please don’t talk to me” may run through your mind. I’ve also said such things to myself. Sometimes the last thing you want to do is to talk with someone, especially someone new.

Why do we go out of our ways to avoid people? Do we think meeting new people is a waste of time? Or are we just lazy, thinking that meeting someone new really is a trouble?

Communication is the key to life. We have been told that many times. Take the past generations, like our parents, for example. They seem to take full advantage of that whole “communication” idea because they grew up talking face to face while Generation-Y grew up staring at screens. We spend hours of our days sitting on Facebook. We send messages to our friends and think about all of the things we want to say to certain people that we don’t have the courage to do in reality.

Nowadays, we are so caught up in our little circle of friends—our comfort zone. We love it that they laugh at our jokes, understand our feelings and can read our minds. Most importantly, they know when we want to be alone. They just get us.

Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don’t really believe and being someone you think they want you to be—it is, as I said before, a trouble. It takes up so much energy, and at some point or another, it is too tiring.

But meeting new people is important. Life is too short, so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh. Remember, every “hello” leads to a smile—and a smile is worth a lot.

1. What do we learn about the author?
A.He likes to meet someone new.B.He feels stressed out lately.
C.He’s active in attending social events.D.He used to be afraid of talking to others.
2. What’s the problem of Generation-Y in the author’s eyes?
A.They rely on the Internet to socialize.B.They are less confident in themselves.
C.They have difficulty in communicating.D.They are unwilling to make new friends.
3. Why do many young people avoid meeting new people?
A.They think it troublesome.B.They are busy with their study.
C.They fear to disappoint their friends.D.They want to do meaningful work.
4. Why does the author write the text?
A.To stress the importance of friends.
B.To give tips on how to meet new people.
C.To encourage people to meet new people.
D.To display the disadvantages of Generation-Y.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲的是决定蔬菜食用效果的一些影响因素以及推荐食用蔬菜的方法。

3 . By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there ways to get more from the vegetables you already eat? A research shows that when it comes to vegetables, it’s not only how much we eat, but also how we prepare them, that decides the vitamins and other nutrients that enter our body.

Many studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease, and eye problems and even cancer. But raw vegetables are not always best. The researchers found that 198 Germans who eat raw food were short of lycopene, the matter found in tomatoes and other red vegetables. “There is an idea that raw foods are always going to be better,” says Steven K. Clinton, a professor at Ohi o State University. “For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can be helpful.”

A number of factors decide how the vegetables do good to people’s health before they reach the table, including where and how they were grown and stored before being bought. No single cooking way is best. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if they are cooked in different ways.

Vitamins C and B are often lost. In January, another report said that boiling was better for carrots than frying or serving them raw. Frying was the worst way to cook.

What cooked with the vegetables can also be important? When the vegetables were cooked with fat, the diners can get more nutrients. Fat can also make the taste of vegetables better, meaning that people will eat more of them. Putting on some other things that make it taste better—a little salt—can make the food taste better.

1. The writer mainly wants to tell us that ________.
A.people should eat more vegetables
B.the way people eat vegetables is important
C.eating vegetables is good for us
D.how much vegetables one should eat
2. The people who eat the raw vegetables for a long time will ________.
A.have the eyes problemsB.have heart disease
C.be in need of lycopeneD.hate eating tomatoes
3. The following decide how the vegetables do good to people EXCEPT ________.
A.the place where the vegetables are grown
B.the way how the vegetables are stored
C.the way how the vegetables are prepared
D.the price at which the vegetable are sold
4. From the last paragraph, we can know ________.
A.It’s better to cook vegetables with fat
B.the more fat in the cooking, the fewer vegetables people will eat
C.It’s better to cook the vegetables without salt
D.the fat will increase the nutrition of the vegetables

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章作者以个人经历讲述了英语和其他欧洲语言的一些区别。

4 . When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation (住所). I suggested that they should stay at “bed and breakfast” houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.

“We didn’t stay at ‘bed and breakfast houses’,” they said, “because we found that most families were away on holiday.”

I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought “VACANCIES” meant “holidays”, because the Spanish word for “holidays” is “vacaciones”. So they did not go to the house where the sign outside said “VACANCIES”, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to the house where the sign said “NO VACANCIES”, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels!

We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word” DIVERSION” means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word “DIVERSION” on a road sign, the thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hole.

English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said “Thank you” in French. I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that ‘Thank you’ in French means “No, thank you.”

1. My Spanish friends wanted advice about ______.
A.driving their car on English roadsB.going to England by car
C.finding places to stay in EnglandD.learning English
2. Why did I suggest that they stay at “bed and breakfast houses”?
A.Because it would be much cheaper than staying in hotels
B.Because It would be convenient for them to have dinner
C.Because they would be able to practice their English.
D.Because there would be no problem in finding accommodation there
3. What does “NO VACANCIES” mean in English according to the passage?
A.Free rooms.B.No free rooms.
C.Not away on holiday.D.Holidays.
4. When someone offered me more coffee and I said “Thank you in French, I ______.
A.wanted them to take the coffee pot away
B.didn’t really want any more coffee
C.wanted to express my politeness
D.really wanted some more coffee

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章介绍了北京大兴国际机场的概况。

5 . The official opening of Beijing Daxing International Airport caps a long design and building process. Designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid and her Chinese partners, the airport is built for the future, having a terminal the size of 97 soccer grounds—as well as customerservice robots that provide travelers with flight updates and airport information.

Called “Starfish” by Chinese media for its shape of five concourses (大厅) connected to a main hall, Daxing aims to reduce walking for passengers. The airport authority has promised a distance of no more than 600 meters—about eight minutes of walking—between security checkpoints and the remotest boarding gates.

This new modern airport employs a special intelligent lighting system, supported by eight big C-shaped columns that let in the sunlight, brightening the architecture and structure. Therefore it minimizes the need to use electric lighting.

To offer a more refreshing travel experience, five outdoor courtyards—with the themes “Silk Garden”, “Tea Garden”,“Porcelain (瓷) Garden”, “Countryside Garden” and “Chinese Garden”—feature at the end of the five departure lounges for use by passengers waiting for their flights. Travelers will be scanned on cameras using facial recognition. Counters will be fully automated to capture face photos and relay them each part of the journey through the airport, including security and the departure gate.

China is projected to overtake the United States as the world’s biggest air travel market by 2022. The “modest” initial operational target at Daxing is to accommodate 72 million passengers and 2 million tons of goods annually by 2025. The ambitious master plan calls for the building of a total of seven runways, and moving at least 100 million passengers and 4 million tons of goods a year through the airport.

1. Why is the airport in a starfishshaped design?
A.To keep security checkpoints effective.
B.To hold as many passengers as possible.
C.To make boarding gates within easy reach.
D.To get the main hall easier to be found.
2. What can the airport’s lighting system be described as?
A.Energysaving.B.Highend.
C.Passengerfriendly.D.Strangelyformed.
3. What can be inferred about the five outdoor courtyards?
A.They use popular techniques.
B.They reflect the Chinese tradition.
C.They follow the latest world trend.
D.They promote Chinese goods to people.
4. What do the numbers in the last paragraph indicate?
A.The airport’s potential.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。介绍了城市生活虽然有缺点,但也有优点。对于城市生活的缺点,作者仍充满希望,认为只要采取相应措施就会有所改变。

6 . Some people say that city living in the 21st century is stressful and offers no advantages, but I don’t agree with them completely.

With the development of high-tech and the improvement of living qualities, more and more people crowded into the city, which leads to the uncontrollable urbanization(城市化). Because of this, some of the largest cities must be fairly oppressive(压抑的) places in which to live if you are short of money or unemployed. However, for those with much income, a city provides colourful environment which enables people to enjoy their modern life. In that case, I believe the advantages of urban living far outweigh its shortcomings.

Regarding shopping, as for me, rather than click on the Internet to get what I want, I prefer to window-shop. All kinds of shopping malls and supermarkets located in the city centre really content me. What’s more, a large city’s service even covers numbers of the surrounding towns and benefits many people.

In terms of entertainment, city residents are usually spoiled for choice, from amusement park to sport stadium, whoever you are will find exactly what you need. Maybe going to a concert tonight and visiting museums tomorrow. The city always contains various activities and full of energy.

The city also provides better opportunities with so many choices and challenges. Cities with universities offer high-standard education so that graduates from these places always get ideal jobs with considerable salary. Every day in the business district, you can see a fierce competition among those large companies, while there are exactly places that may give birth to talents.

Many people may complain about the traffic jam or pollution in the city, but I think with some useful measures to take, our city will be more habitable rather than stressful.

1. What does the author intend to tell us in the passage?
A.City living in the 21st century is stressful.
B.The city provides more conveniences and pleasures.
C.City living brings great trouble to the youth.
D.The city is gradually dying out as a matter of fact.
2. The advantages of urban living are        .
A.disposable income and colourful environment
B.quantities of population and shopping centres
C.great entertainments and better education
D.strong measures and fresh air
3. City residents are usually spoiled for choice because        .
A.they have no more choices for amusementB.they can hardly find what they like to do
C.there are so many kinds of entertainmentD.they will spend more money in a way
4. What’s the attitude of the author to the disadvantages in a city?
A.Disappointed.B.Hopeful.C.Subjective.D.Cold-hearted.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。本文主要介绍了NASA女宇航员Meir一步步成为宇航员的过程,以及她对太空旅行的一些感受。

9 . On October 18, 2019, NASA astronaut Jessica Meir and her partner Christina Koch replaced a failed power controller outside the international space station (ISS). It means two women astronauts have made history with the first all-woman spacewalk.

It’s not surprising that after having dived (潜水) deep under the Antarctic ice and climbed to some of the highest mountains in the world, Jessica Meir has set out to reach the outer space.

Meir’s parents moved to Caribou, Maine and Meir grew up there. The family didn’t know anybody who worked for NASA or for the space program in any way. She thought her dream of joining in space exploration came true because of the love of nature she learned from her mother, and her father’s preference for adventure.

When being asked whether she worries about the risks of space travel, Meir says, “I don’t worry about it. We do such a good job here at training. The people at the NASA centers work so hard to get us ready. They attach great importance to making sure that we are fully supported. Training and safety agreements are always the most important things. Emergent situations are stressed and practiced so many times that responses become natural. You can rely on that training. Yeah, you’re doing things you’ve never done before, but they know how to give that to you in a professional way.”

“The happiest and most exciting thing I’ve ever experienced is that I have the spiritual and physical challenges at the same time. I’ve always been this way. I’m sure my mother would agree as she’s watched me do extreme sports throughout my life. I don’t think of them as risky, though. It is more about controlled risk. Being well trained and following safety measures is part of the fun. I do truly live by the principle that without risk there is no reward.”

1. Why did Jessica Meir and Christina Koch make history?
A.They did a spacewalk without men.B.They are the youngest women astronauts.
C.They are the first women to do a spacewalk.D.They replaced a failed power controller successfully.
2. What kind of character does Jessica Meir have according to her personal experiences?
A.Smart.B.Considerate.C.Hard-working.D.Adventurous.
3. Why doesn’t Jessica Meir worry about the risks of space travel?
A.She is an experienced astronaut.B.She thinks doing a space travel is easy.
C.She trusts her co-workers and their work.D.She believes there is no emergent situation.
4. What does Jessica Meir say in the last paragraph?
A.Practice makes perfect.B.The controlled risk is worthwhile.
C.There is no risk in becoming an astronaut.D.She gets the spirit of adventure from her mom.
