1 . It was my first day of sixth grade. I looked at my schedule and saw that I had Mrs.Foxwell and this made me happy. Over the next three years, Mrs.Foxwell taught me many important things that I will never forget.

Of all of the teachers and coaches I have had in my life, Mrs.Foxwell has been my favorite leader. In her class, she taught me how to be a successful leader. She also taught me that good leaders earn everyone’s respect.

Mrs.Foxwell is one of the most respected and respectful people I know. She is always kind to everyone and she treats others the way that she wants to be treated. She taught me respect in many different ways, but mainly how to be respectful in the business world. She told me that I needed to have a firm handshake and that I should always look people in the eye when I talk to them. Mrs.Foxwell also taught me that you could earn someone’s respect by working hard to achieve your goals.

In addition to working at Brandywine Springs, Mrs.Foxwell once worked at a bank as a manager but she gave that up to teach kids how to be successful. Mrs.Foxwell told our class how she would cry because of the amount of work she had to do in very little time. She taught our class that working all night at something you don’t love is very stressful, so you should try and do something you love. In the end, she taught me that you have to keep your head high and pull through. I don’t think I have ever worked as hard in any class as I did in her class. We created our own 28-page business plan to share with her, our parents, other teachers and our classmates. Although creating a business from nothing was a lot of hard work, I really enjoyed it and learned several lessons that will help me throughout life.

I have had a lot of role models in my life, but one of the biggest is Eva Foxwell. She taught me leadership qualities, how to be respectful and why you should work hard. She changed my life for the better and I desire to be like her.

3 . Frances Stevens Reese Wooldland Trail Guide

The Woodland Trail was opened to the public on October 21, 1997. Boscobel’s Board of Directors adopted a formal decision of naming the Woodland Trail in honor of former Boscobel board member, Fances Stevens Reese (1917-2003), one year after his death.

The trail(小径) is approximately 10 miles in length, leading down to Constitution Forest. When the West Point Glass Factory was operating during the Civil War, trees for miles around were cleared to provide firewood. Walking out of the forest, you will find a large mass of native hard rock about three billion years old.

Throughout this country path, you will find picture boards identifying birds and plants local to this region. You will also find signs with historic and environmental information written by area specialists.

When you take a walk through this “undiscovered” forest land, please be a considerate guest.

Before walking the trail, please purchase a pass in the Carriage House. Plan ahead, so you will be back by closing time.

Follow the trail markers and remain on the trail. Besides protecting the fragile forest ecosystem, you will reduce the risk of poison plants and snakes.

Leave rocks, plants, animals and art works where you see them so that the person behind you can have the same experience.

Carry out whatever you carry in because there are no rubbish containers on the trail. If you happen to see a piece of litter, be a good guest and pick it up.

A young man happened to be coming down the path at the very moment. He saw the little boy and came up.“What’s wrong, young man?” he asked.

The man looked at the little boy thoughtfully.“Look, why don’t you try again. Don’t lose heart. I ’ll come with you this time.”

The little boy got up and took the man’s hand. The king’s guards spotted them.

“Look, mister,we don’t have to do this...I don’t want you to get hurt. We can just turn around now.”

The man held the little boy’s hand and went on. The boy really thought the man might be crazy until he looked back up at the guards. They were all smiling now. The little boy was surprised.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些对高中生的建议。

5 . On my first day of high school, I asked an eleventh grader where my class was. And he told me it was “on the fourth floor, next to the pool.” I found out five minutes later that we don’t even have a fourth floor and there’s no pool either! Besides that, I didn’t have any trouble with the older kid.

I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load (工作量) and size of the school. I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours, so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size is around 550, but joining in clubs, sports, music, and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade.

The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I’ve prepared for the night before, gotten an A, and not remembered anything later. I’ve changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more. Don’t take easy classes just to have a simple year. If you have a choice between chemistry and sports, the first will prove to be a lot more useful!

While drinking and smoking might be present in some middle schools, they’re also around in high school. I have a lot of friends who promised they’d never drink or smoke, but are now partying every weekend. If you have “fun” and spend your nights wasted instead of studying, you will regret it when you’re applying for (申请) college. The “friends” who say you’re a loser for not partying are really not your friends at all. It’s hard to see your closest friends grow apart and go in different directions, but don’t follow their footsteps. Create your own path in life and make your own decisions.

1. What does the author think of high school?
A.There are very few activities.
B.It’s hard to meet new people there.
C.It requires hard work.
D.There isn’t enough time for homework.
2. The author advises high school students to________.
A.get ready for tests the night before
B.give up sports
C.choose useful classes
D.try their best to get good grades
3. The text is probably written by________.
A.a high school studentB.a chemistry teacher
C.a college studentD.a sports player
4. The last paragraph mainly tells us________.
A.about the trouble caused by drinking and smoking
B.not to go to any party in high school
C.not to lose ourselves in high school
D.about the importance of making friends

6 . One night in 1966, Michael Chapman rushed into a folk-music club in Cornwall, England to get out of the rain, and soon found himself onstage playing the guitar.

“They offered me a job to play for the rest of the summer. And I’ve been playing ever since,” Chapman says. “I’ve told that story so many times, but it’s absolutely true. If it hadn’t been raining that night, I wouldn’t be talking to you.”

The British guitar player has spent the 50 years since then on the road. He released some praised albums in the 1970s, but his health went downhill in the 80s and 90s. Like a lot of British artists in the 1960s, Chapman taught himself to play the guitar by listening to American jazz and blues records.

Chapman actually taught photography, but quit when he was 26 to play music full time. When he was starting out, he was often compared to other British acoustic (原声的) guitar heroes of the time, like John Martyn and Bert Jansch.

“The fascinating thing about Michael Chapman is that he doesn’t fit in with those guys of his generation,” says Andrew Male, a music journalist. “He’s always- been an outsider. He never moved to London.”

And while he never became part of the London music scene, Chapman was noticed by those musicians. “The 70s caught up with him in the 80s,” Male says. “He had a huge heart attack at the end of the 80s that nearly finished him off. When he made his way back into the world in the early 90s, people had forgotten about him.”

But not everyone. A younger generation of musicians in America, including Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and a younger singer and guitarist named Steve Gumi, recently rediscovered Chapman.

“We wanted to capture Michael’s voice and character where he is now. You know, it’s a little road-weary, but he still has it,” Gunn says. “For me, it was really important to get that right,” “He’s the right old musician for present times,” Male says. “I think the music he makes seems quite in tune with where we’re at.”

1. What word can best describe Michael Chapman’s first involvement in music?
A.Untrue.B.Accidental.
C.Unfortunate.D.Reasonable.
2. What can we learn about the British guitarist John Martyn from the text?

D.A Guitar Musician’s Back with the Help of a New Generation

“She’s never played soccer before,” Mrs Benson told the coach.“I’m not sure how she’ll do.”

“Throughout that college season, I knew I was being watched,” Jenny says, “I knew I couldn’t be perfect, so I just tried to be very consistent and have fun.”

As a professional, Jenny relied on her focused but funloving attitude. “In a game, I try never to put too much pressure on myself. The more I concentrate on having fun, the better I play.” She says. “I have good and bad days, just like everyone else, but I know the sun will always come up after a bad day. 8 . Alan Naiman was known for being very careful about how he spent his money. But even those closest to him had no knowledge of the fortune he quietly gathered and the last act he had planned.

Naiman died of cancer at age 63 last January. The man from the American state of Washington gave most of his money to groups that help the poor, sick, disabled and abandoned children.

He gave them $11 million. The large amount of his fortune shocked the groups that received his gifts and even his best friends. That is because Naiman had been known to repair his own shoes with duct tape. He had sought deals to buy food from grocery stores at closing time and taken friends out to lunch at low cost restaurants.

10 . Look out of the window of your workplace. Is the view pleasing? Can you see trees and grassy areas, or rubbish bins? Do you enjoy leaving the building at lunchtime or would you rather stay in your office?

Indoor work environments (in particular factors like light, noise and temperature) have an effect on working quality. Attractive offices, with common areas and relaxing activities, will appeal to businesses and workers. If a positive office indoor environment helps, it makes sense that a nice outdoor one should do the job, too.

Those who work in a big city are complaining about crowded conditions, surrounded by busy roads. But there are exceptions. Chiswick Park in west London is the kind of area that local people like to frequent on their days off. It has its own waterfall and lake, where ducks have settled, and there are tree-shaded lawns where one can picnic on sunny summer days. The actively minded can head for a special area to play basketball or football. The autumn brings firework shows and when the weather is good, the site holds food fairs, concerts or other events.

During the week, however, 9,000 people flood into the park’s 12 office buildings. They are home to 73 businesses, including big companies like Paramount and Sony.

Anyone who has visited the main office of a tech company will be surprised to find comfortable chairs, pool tables and even guitars or bikes for hire, like those in a big hotel. The worry about such services is that they aim to keep employees in the office for as long as possible. If you can eat, go to the gym and even get your dry cleaning done at work, why go home?

The danger, as with many aspects of the future economy, is of another class divide. In addition to fat pay checks, well-decorated offices with top-class services located in attractive parks for the fortunate few who program for big tech groups or run large companies; dissatisfying jobs in “satisfying centers” and busy roads outside for the rest. On the bright side, office workers in the latter will at least still have a reason to head home.

A.To encourage readers to find answers all by themselves.
B.To point out the trouble in improving working conditions.
C.To attract readers’ attention to the topic of the article.

A.It is regarded as local people’s favorite park.
B.Indoor events and ball games can be held here.
C.Its unique natural beauty is beyond compare.
D.Employees enjoy a pleasing environment here.
3. What is the problem with the satisfying offices?
A.Employees are eager to give up family life for work.
B.Employees feel superior to those in regular offices.
C.Employees get cheated into working with less salary.
D.Employees experience differences in social positions.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.An office with a viewB.An unusual business park
C.A call for office servicesD.A new style in decoration
