What Would you Want Most on a Desert Island? This month's survey shows people worldwide have a natural understanding of what they would need most if left alone on a desert island: Another person. And one they know well. Respondents(调查对象)in all 16 countries surveyed said their spouse(配偶)or partner would be their first choice to have with them. Perhaps this makes sense: An MP3 player can't help you find drinking water, your dog can't help you start a fire and who knows if George Clooney or Penélope Cruz has taken courses in wilderness survival training? Let's just hope the SOS sign you two build gets spotted sooner rather than later!
“My husband, of course! George Clooney wouldn't think I'm as pretty as my husband does!” Roseane, 42, Brazil | “My MP3 player. I would not want my loved ones, including my pet, to be left alone like this.” Co-Co, 28, China | “My partner should be there to listen to me complain about the fact that we are left alone on an island—probably due to some error he made.” Julia, 25, Jordan |
Spouse/Partner 82% of the South African women surveyed would most want their husband/partner with them, while just 45% of the Indian women surveyed agreed. | Clooney/Cruz 27% of Russian men surveyed would want a celebrity(名人)along. Only 2% of the Mexican men agreed. Less than 18% of women worldwide chose this option.
MP3 Player This was second choice overall, particularly among Malaysian men, with 32% saying they'd most want an MP3 player with their favorite songs. Just 5% each of Australian and American men agreed. | Dog In France, 28% of respondents older than 45 would most want to be left alone with their dog, while not a single Russian or Malaysian in that age group surveyed would most want Fido along. |

5 . Teenagers who spend hours in front of the television may have a poorer diet as young adults.
A study, which included nearly 1,400 high school students, found those who watched TV for five hours or more per day had less healthy diets than peers five years later. Why does this happen? Should the parents take any measures?
On the one hand, people who spend a lot of time in front of the TV, especially teenagers, may snack more, and that may influence their long-term diet quality. On the other hand, TV ads for fast food, sweets and snacks tempt teenagers to eat more of those foods. And TV time might also replace exercise time for some kids.
Lead researcher Dr. Daheia J. Barr-Anderson, of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, told Reuters Health a clear relationship between TV time during high school and diet quality in young adulthood. While the heaviest TV viewers were eating the most junk food, those who'd watched less than two hours per day had the highest intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and high-calcium food. In her opinion, parents should limit and monitor TV viewing.
As far as I am concerned, children should watch not more than two hours of television per day. And parents should set a good example by eating right, being physically active and controlling their own TV time.

6 . Years ago it was popular to speak of a generation gap, a disagreement between young people and their elders. Parents said that children did not show them proper respect and obedience (服从), while children complained that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared? Actually the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many people argue that a gap is built into the fabric (结构) of our society.
One important cause of the generation gap is the chance that young people have to choose their own ways of life. In more traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and agree to, and to continue the family occupation. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family home at an early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents.
In our easily changing society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the strong wish that parents have for their children is another cause of the disagreement between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.
Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature of American life for some time to come. Its causes are rooted in the freedom and changes of our society, and in the rapid speed at which society changes.

8 . At the age of 7, Rudolph Ingram Jr. also known as “Blaze the Great” has already broken several records and has become the fastest boy in the country, showing early signs of possibly becoming the next Usain Bolt.
Blaze’s father Rudolph Ingram Sr. shared that the little boy started training when he was only 4 years old right after watching the Olympics. Since then, he has shown great athleticism. His most recent 100-meter dash clocked at 13.48 seconds, breaking the USA Track and Field records for his age group.
“I feel great, anyways I trained for it,” said Blaze, who dreams “to get into the National Football League” someday.
His father has always been hands-on in his training to prepare for his future, but still lets him be a kid.
“He watched the Usain Bolt documentary, he has seen a lot of those people’s documentaries and he realizes that they were doing the same thing that he was doing at that age. So he could see where this would lead to,” he said.
Blaze has caught the attention of many people, including football players O.J. Howard and Mike Evans from Tampa Bay Bucs and basketball star LeBron James. His social media account @blaze_813 has more than 500,000 followers. Moreover, when talking about what he has accomplished and will accomplish in the future, his father Rudolph Ingram Sr. said, “This is my baby. I feel like he’s a one in a million children. 9 . It’s a question that has been asked for years: Is a dishwasher or washing dishes by hand greener? Which uses less energy and water?
A few years ago, the answer was that the dishwasher was better but a very careful hand-washer could probably use about the same amount of water and less energy. However, much has changed since then. Technology combined with good design has made the dish washer greatly better over the years, to the point where there’s hardly a question. Studies are showing that modern dishwashers can save more water than most hand-washers.
Dishwashers are even more efficient. Modern dishwashers have pre-heaters that increase the water temperature up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit to sanitize them. The dishwasher also has a timer that lets you set it to turn on at a later time when the power rates are lower.
On the other hand, none of the studies do an analysis of what it takes in terms of energy and water to actually build the dishwasher and replace it every 10 years or so. Nor does it take into account a Swedish study that found that children in families that wash dishes by hand are less likely to develop fever probably due to the “hygiene hypothesis”, which says the reason why kids fall ill is that their surroundings are actually too clean. If you’re not willing to fill up the sinks, the researchers point out that maybe the dishwasher is one labor-saving machine that does a better job than you can especially if you value your time. The researchers write, “When a user’s time spent washing dishes is valued, machine dishwashers pay for themselves within a year of use.”
