2 . If you choose to be part of the world's biggest New Year's Eve party at the Times Square, here are some activities to make your experience memorable and pleasant.
Watch the Times Square New Year's Eve's Ball Drop
The famous Waterford Crystal ball, which can display more than 16 million colors, will be raised at around 18:00 to the top of the flagpole at the Times Square. At exactly 23:59, it will start its one minute drop to ring in the New Year. Those who get the choicest spots typically arrive before 15:00. By 22:30, it's nearly impossible to find a spot with a view of the ball.
Of course, if Ball Drop isn't your cup of tea, there are plenty of other ways to ring in the New Year in NYC.
Join the bike ride and dance
Participants in the annual New Year's Eve bike ride can join ranks with the skaters at the entrance to Washington Square Park at 22 :00, and then make your way through Manhattan before winding down at Central Park's Belvedere Castle at 23:45,just in time for an informal dance party with the group ( festival dress is needed), as Central Park's midnight fireworks display gets underway.
Celebrate New Year's Eve at the Comedy Cellar
Laugh your way into the New Year with the country's best comedians at New York's most famous comedy club. It will show the countdown and ball-drop festivities at the Times Square live on their 10-foot screen. Tickets are available online and there is a two drink minimum.
Get classy with the performing arts
For a high class night on the town, look to special New Year s Eve programming at performing arts centers like The Metropolitan Opera. Normally, the black tie Gala Dinner Package usually includes a post performance dinner and dance on the Mercedes Bass Grand Tier, where you will be able to see the midnight fireworks erupt throughout New York City.

3 . Natural lakes cover about 2.8% of Earth's non-oceanic surface. Despite the small percentage, they are very important to both regional and global ecosystems. However, lakes around the world, such as the Great Lakes in the United States, the Aral Sea and the Dead Sea in Asia and the Lake Chad in Africa, are disappearing and even have disappeared. Identifying the main factors of lakes' decline is of great value for global lake management and lake recovery, especially for the largest freshwater lake in China, Poyang Lake.
Located in eastern China's Jiangxi Province, Poyang Lake has a drainage(灌排) area of 162,225 km2,feeds a population of up to 44 million and annually supplies 17% of the water for the Yangtze River, the longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world. It also provides a home for millions of birds during the lake's low water stages in late autumn and winter, including 95% of the world's endangered white cranes. Moreover, the variations in the lake's water output directly affect the environments in the East China Sea.
However, since the beginning of the 21st century, Poyang Lake has experienced continuously extreme low water levels in autumn, which has put the threatened birds at risk of extinction.
Despite several efforts to explore the causes of the Poyang Lake's dryness, to date, there have been no studies that attempt to distinguish and quantify the contribution of each possible factor on the lake's recent low water levels.
Therefore, the objectives of my study are to quantify the contribution of each factor leading to Poyang Lake's dryness. These results are of vital value in characterizing the problems of the Poyang Lake and its related wetlands. They also can be applied to other large lakes in similar situations around the world.

4 . SpaceX launched its straight out-of-science fiction Starship several miles into the air from a remote corner of Texas on Wednesday, but the test flight ended in a fireball at touchdown.
The rocketship—50 meters tall and 9 meters wide—soared out over the Gulf of Mexico. After about five minutes, it reached an altitude of 12.5 kilometers. That's almost 100 times higher than the previous test flights. Then it turned sideways as planned and came back to Earth near the Mexican border. When it touched down, however, the rocketship exploded.
The entire flight lasted six minutes and 42 seconds. SpaceX broadcast it live on its website. Despite the crash, Musk, the owner of SpaceX, called it a “success” and tweeted, “Mars, here we come!”
SpaceX said that the rocket was precisely guided to the landing point. The fuel tank pressure was low, however, when the engines were successfully restarted for touchdown, which caused Starship to come down a little bit too fast.
Starship is actually the upper stage of Musk's moon-and Mars-ships. It will be carried on the top of a bigger rocket, known as Super Heavy, which is still in development. The entire vehicle will tower 120 meters—9.4 meters taller than NASA's Saturn V rocket that carried men to the moon almost three decades ago. SpaceX intends to use Starship to put massive satellites into orbit around Earth, besides delivering people and cargo to the moon by 2024 and Mars in 2026.
While accepting an award in Berlin last week, Musk said he's highly confident of a human flight to Mars in six years—“if we get lucky, maybe four years”. But Musk admitted for the first time after the test failure that his timelines could be too optimistic.
1. How long did the entire flight last?A.For less than 300 seconds. | B.For 402 seconds. |
C.For more than 402 seconds. | D.For 300 seconds. |
A.did not find the landing point | B.was filled with too much fuel |
C.failed to reach the necessary landing speed | D.could not restart the engines for touchdown |
A.SpaceX will send people to the moon as planned. |
B.Starship will be used to put satellites into orbit. |
C.SpaceX will continue its future journey to Mars. |
D.Starship will be carried on the top of Super Heavy. |

May to October | 813,562 | Dutch | Euro | Average high: 5.8 °C | Average high: 22.0 °C |
Must-See Attractions
Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. Don’t miss the Dam Square and the areas around Spui and Nieuwmarkt. You’ll also want to check out Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter in the South District, which is a great place to buy souvenir gifts for family back home at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. If you have time you should try to explore the Canal Ring, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a pub for celebrity spotting and nightlife today.
Transportation
Travelers should be aware that Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the busiest airports in the world. This airport is located about 15 kilometers southwest of the city center. You’d better catch a train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station, which has many connecting routes (路线). It’s typically not a good idea to drive a car to the city center because traffic is crowded and parking is difficult to find. Cycling is quite popular here, and it’s easy to find cheap bike rentals around town.

6 . Bikes are the most common means of transportation in our daily life, but have you ever noticed that a man’s bike is quite different from a woman’s bike? The traditional difference between a man’s bike and a woman’s bike is the top tube design. A man’s bike would have a top tube going straight from the top of the head tube to the top of the seat tube, while a woman’s bike would have a top tube that connected to the seat tube somewhere lower down. This was originally to make it possible to ride a bike while wearing a skirt without exposing any morally offending body parts while mounting the bike. A consequence of this is that traditional women’s frames are weaker than men’s, which is why performance-oriented bikes all look the same regardless of the gender of the rider.
If you’re looking for a performance-based difference, then women often have shorter upper bodies and arms than men, so some manufacturers adapt to that by building frames with shorter top tubes. Others merely think a “cute” paint scheme (组合) on the smaller sizes of their standard frames will be called a woman’s bike. Do note that the difference from one person to another can easily be bigger than the differences between the man’s bike and the woman’s bike standard. There are also a few other ways of fitting a bike to the rider. For example, handlebars can be replaced for some adjustments of riding position.
While it’s nice to have a well-fitting bike, for an ordinary rider it’s not as important for a MTB (山地车) as it is for a road bike. On a MTB the rider spends more time out of the saddle (鞍). While riding a road bike the rider spends more time on the saddle, so the position has to fit better. And if it’s just for wandering around the block, then most riders would prefer a “woman’s” bike. They will usually provide a more upright riding position, which is more comfortable for casual riding.
1. What is the traditional difference between a man’s bike and a woman’s bike?A.The design of paint. |
B.The design of saddle. |
C.The design of top tube. |

7 . A roadside system that detects if a mobile phone is in use in a passing vehicle is being tested in the UK first. Despite being unable to tell whether the driver is using the phone, it is hoped that it will act as a warning to people who make calls behind the wheel. The technology picks up the phone signal in the vehicle and activates(激活) a roadside warning sign of a mobile phone with a red line through it.
The system can’t tell the difference between a driver and a passenger on a bus, but to some degree it can warn drivers that they can be detected using their phones. Using a directional antenna(天线),the detector picks up radio waves produced by a phone handset , and measures the signal strength and length of them. When a signal is detected of duration(持续时间) long enough and signal strength strong enough to set off the system, the detector activates the warning sign. The detector is able to distinguish Bluetooth connections or hands- free devices which, when picked up,will prevent the activation.
While this new system is no replacement for a police officer catching someone in the act, it could be enough to make some drivers think twice- and that has to be a positive step forward. However, just as technology has enabled the problem of drivers using mobile phones illegally, it can also be a big part of the solution in getting people to stop. Statistics from the devices will be shared with Norfolk Police, the county council said. The council said that enabling the system to record specific number plates could be a“future development”.
Using a mobile phone at the wheel is one of the four road crimes which can have horrible consequences if it causes a deadly or serious car crash. Law enforcement(执行) technology has been falling behind for a decade and not made any easier by motor producers that encourage users to plug in their phones even before driving.

9 . Facebook is a habit forming activity, but users who spend a lot of time on the site say they feel less happy with their lives.
Researchers from University of Gothenburg say that many users log in as soon as they turn their PCs on and that the behavior can develop into an“addiction”. People in low income groups and the poorly educated are particularly at risk. Up to 85% of users say that they use Facebook daily and half say they start up Facebook as soon as they open their web users. Half fear that they are not“on top of things”if they are not logged into the site, and 25% say they feel”ill at ease”if they can't log in regularly.
The Swedish survey showed the network had its dark side.“Face-booking may become an unconscious habit. A majority of the respondents(受访者) log in every time they start their web browser(浏览器). This may even develop into an addiction,” says Leif Denti, doctoral student of Psychology at the University of Gothenburg.
People with low income and low-educated individuals spend more time on Facebook. Women are generally more active than men on Facebook. Users with low income and low education use Facebook more than other groups. Within these groups, users who spend more time on Facebook also report feeling less happy and less content with their lives.
The other surprise about the network is that although a huge amount of personal “ news”is traded through the site,it tends to focus on the positive.“ Most of the content they share has something to do with major events, positive events and when feeling good,”says Leif Denti.

10 . Wu Ge was asked to prepare a waiting area at Pudong International Airport specifically for transit(过境) passengers on his first day as an airport official tasked with COVID-19 prevention and control.
The task would have been challenging for most people, but Wu took it quickly and gave tasks to his colleagues. Together, they cleaned and disinfected(消毒) the area, and set zones for checking people' s temperatures and filling out forms. It wasn't until the first passenger stepped into the waiting area that Wu finally took a break.
Born in Chongqing, the 46-year-old began working at Pudong International Airport in 2007 and is now an official leading more than 300 members of the Shanghai airport authority's safety check and protection department.
As the nation 's busiest airport for overseas travelers, Shanghai Pudong International Airport is battling the COVID-19 with closed-loop management. During this period, Wu and his colleagues have been given a special task force in charge of separating overseas travelers into various kinds, sending passengers to quarantine(检疫) spots and safeguarding them.
“This job requires care, responsibility and hard work. Our teammates have sweat all over their bodies as they have to wear N95 face-masks and protective suits all the time. Each of us walks at least 30,000 steps every day. Sometimes we even hit 60,000 steps,” he says.
Wu's work as the group leader is nonstop. Breakfast is sometimes the only meal he has in a day. Wu says he tries his best to reduce waiting time for passengers. He has also arranged for hot water and biscuits to be made available for passengers around the clock.
