文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了Ann Arbor的游玩攻略。

2 . Ann Arbor Travel Guide

When you think of Ann Arbor, you likely think of the University of Michigan. In some ways, the two are the same. But Ann Arbor has an identity of its own. That is the unique festivals like Apple Daze in the fall and FestiFools in the spring. And the town is known as the “City of Trees”: visitors can paddle (划船) and hike their way down the lush (茂密的) Huron River Water Trail or appreciate flowers at a local garden in early summer.

Best months to visit

The best time to visit Ann Arbor is between May and September, when temperatures rest comfortably and lots of activities are held there. For example, June is a perfect time to go outside and experience Ann Arbor’s outdoor spaces, like the Huron River and Mathai Botanical Gardens. If a fall or winter trip amuses you, you will still find plenty to do. College football season runs from September to November, so that’s a great time to visit if you’d like to catch a game at Michigan Stadium. In the colder months, you can spend time in Ann Arbor’s many indoor museums or enjoying special holiday events, like Kindle Fest.

Tips for saving money

Eat where the locals do. Many hole-in-the-wall restaurants are frequented by college students and therefore keep their prices reasonable to attract the public.

Walk, walk, and walk. Downtown Ann Arbor is a very walkable area. In fact, driving and parking a car is often annoying. By getting around on your feet, you will not only get a better feel for the town, but save money that would have otherwise been spent on a rental car or taxi rides.

1. What is the special feature of Ann Arbor?
A.Its good location.B.Its special festivals.
C.Its famous restaurants.D.Its educational environment.
2. What may be the best time to visit Ann Arbor if you are a football fan?
A.Early spring.B.Late winter.C.September.D.June.
3. What’s the author’s advice on saving money when visiting Ann Arbor?
A.Asking for discounts while buying tickets.
B.Having meals in the college dining hall.
C.Renting a car to visit the city.
D.Traveling around on foot.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了海洋生态受到了不同程度的破坏,对此大自然保护协会提出用重组债务的方法来保护海洋。介绍了其具体的事实步骤以及是否可行。

3 . Ah, earth’s oceans. They are beautiful, inspiring and life-sustaining. They are also, as you’re probably quite aware, more or less screwed. In the Seychelles, for example, human activities and climate change have left corals bleached. Over fishing has caused fish stocks to drop. Biodiversity is in danger. Some form of protection is needed, obviously. When marine areas are strategically protected, the entire ecosystems can bounce back.

What exactly does smart ocean conservation look like? I want to share with you a brilliant idea from The Nature Conservancy (TNC). They’ve realized debt held by island and coastal nations is the key to achieving their conservation goals. TNC’s idea is to restructure this debt to generate the funds and political will to protect corals and fisheries.

This is how the work gets done. Step one: negotiate the deal. A coastal nation commits to protect at least 30% of its ocean areas. In exchange, TNC brings investors, public funders and international development organizations to the table to restructure a portion of the nation’s debt, leading to lower interest rates and longer repayment periods. Step two: create a marine plan. TNC works with marine scientists, government leaders and local stakeholders to create a detailed conservation plan that integrates the needs of the ocean with the needs of the people. Step three: activate for longevity. TNC establishes an independently operated conservation trust fund. The savings from the debt restructure goes into it to support new marine protected areas. The trust guarantees the government is responsible.

Could this plan work? It already has. In 2016, TNC helped create a national conservation plan in the Seychelles by restructuring $22 million of the government’s debt. And in exchange, the government agreed to protect 30% of its marine areas. Today, the Seychelles is on track to protect 400,000 square kilometers of ocean. That’s an area roughly the size of Germany. This success is making other governments take note. Many want to be part of this. Undeniably, with this approach, everyone wins. Government, local citizens, funders and most importantly, our oceans. So in fact, we all win.

1. What does the underlined word “screwed” probably mean in paragraph 1?
A.Protected.B.Maintained.C.Destroyed.D.Ignored.
2. What can we infer from paragraphs 2 and 3?
A.The governments can use the funds freely.
B.TNC only takes into account how the idea profits coastal nations.
C.Many coastal nations can afford ocean conservation independently.
D.The restructured debt will greatly help achieve marine conservation goals.
3. Why does the author mention “Many want to be part of this.” in paragraph 4?
A.To show the effectiveness of TNC’s idea.
B.To promote TNC’s idea of restructuring debt.
C.To stress the importance of marine protection.
D.To explain the influence of marine protection.
4. What’s the best title for the text?
A.Ah, earth’s oceansB.An all-win idea for coral protection
C.A practical proposal for Marine ProtectionD.Harm caused by human activities to oceans

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章主要谈论了儿童保育的职业化推高了它的价格。

4 . Gone are the days when a mother’s place was in the home: in Britain women with children are now as likely to be in paid work as their unburdened sisters. Many put their little darlings in day care long before they start school. Mindful that a poor start can spoil a person’s chances of success later in life, the state has intervened ever more closely in how babies and toddlers are looked after. Inspectors call not only at nurseries but also at homes where youngsters are minded; three-year-olds follow the national curriculum. Child care has increasingly become a profession.

For years after the government first began in 2001 to twist the arms of anyone who looked after an unrelated child to register with the schools, the numbers so doing fell. Kind but clueless neighbours stopped looking after little ones, who were instead herded into formal nurseries or handed over to one of the ever-fewer registered child-minders. The decline in the number of people taking in children now appears to have halted. According to data released by the Office for Standards in Education on October 27th, the number of registered child-minders reached its lowest point in September 2010 and has since recovered slightly.

The new lot are certainly better qualified. In 2010 fully 82% of nursery workers held diplomas notionally equivalent to A-levels, the university-entrance exams taken mostly by 18-year-olds, up from 56% seven years earlier, says Anand Shukla of the Daycare Trust, a charity. Nurseries staffed by university graduates tend to be rated highest by inspectors, increasing their appeal to the pickiest parents. As a result, more graduates are being recruited.

But professionalization has also pushed up the price of child care, defying even the economic depression. A survey by the Daycare Trust finds that a full-time nursery place in England for a child aged under two, who must be intensively supervised, costs £194 ($310) per week, on average. Prices in London and the south-east are far higher. Parents in Britain spend more on child care than anywhere else in the world, according to the OECD, a think-tank. Some 68% of a typical second earner's net income is spent on freeing her to work, compared with an OECD average of 52%.

The price of child care is not only eye-watering, but has also become a barrier to work. Soon after it took power the coalition government pledged to ensure that people are better off in work than on benefits, but a recent survey by Save the Children, a charity, found that the high cost of day care prevented a quarter of low-paid workers from returning to their jobs once they had started a family. The government pays for free part-time nursery places for three-and four-year-olds, and contributes towards day-care costs for younger children from poor areas. Alas, extending such an aid during stressful economic times would appear to be anything but child’s play.

1. Which of the following is true according to the first paragraph?
A.Nursery education plays a leading role in one’s personal growth.
B.Pregnant women have to work to lighten families’ economic burden.
C.Children in nursery have to take uniform nation courses.

A.the registered child-minders are required to take the university-entrance exams
B.the number of registered child-minders has been declining since 2001
C.anyone who looks after children at home must register with the schools
D.the growing recognition encourages more graduates to work as child-minders
3. The high price of child care __________.
A.prevents mothers from getting employed
B.may further depress the national economy
C.makes many families live on benefits
D.is far more than parents can afford
4. What is the author’s attitude towards the professionalization of child care?
A.Objective.B.Skeptical.C.Supportive.D.Biased.
5. Which of the following would be the subject of the text?
A.The professionalization of child care has pushed up its price.
B.The high cost of child nursing makes many mothers give up their jobs.
C.The employment of more graduates makes nurseries more popular.

8 . CPR (心肺复苏术) saves lives. It can really change someone’s life, as I found out for myself three years ago.

On October 14, 2009, my mom had an accident while playing soccer and was taken to hospital. The next morning, I was told that my mom had had a cardiac arrest (心脏停搏). I later learned that two players on the opposing team kept breathing air into my mother’s mouth and pressing her chest for seven minutes, as they waited for the ambulance to arrive. My mom stayed in the hospital for only ten days. I know that I am very lucky to have my mom here, because most people who have cardiac arrests and do not receive CPR within the first six minutes die.

My mom has used this experience to spread the word about CPR. She joined the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Support Group, which was set up to help survivors and their families through a difficult experience. The support group also takes part in the Heart Walk every year, raising money for the American Heart Association. And she attends Lobby Day each year, convincing the New York State Legislature to pass a law that would make basic CPR and first-aid training a graduation requirement for high school students.

This task is not as difficult as it may first appear to be. Every student in New York State must take health class in order to graduate. Just one or two days of health class each year will ensure that every student in the state will learn this important skill. This training is also nearly free. There is no need for a professional CPR instructor because the American Heart Association has online videos that show the newest techniques in CPR. Also, most local EMS services will lend training models to schools.

My mom and her fellow survivors go to a high school each year to talk to the students about the importance of learning CPR. This training will not get you the official CPR certification (证书), but as my mom says, “You don’t need a little card to save someone’s life.”

1. How does the author feel about the two players?
A.Deeply grateful.B.Quite concerned.
C.A bit sorry.D.Rather frightened.
2. In what way did the author’s mother change?
A.She made efforts to improve CPR.B.She realized the key importance of law.
C.She paid more attention to her health.D.She became an active CPR supporter.
3. What does Paragraph 4 say about the CPR training for students?
A.It may be turned down by a lot of students.
B.It requires little time and money.
C.It will become a graduation requirement.
D.It is difficult and dangerous.
4. What might the author’s mother agree with?
A.It is challenging for many students to master CPR skills.
B.Every graduate should get an official CPR certification.
C.CPR skills are more important than CPR certifications.
D.High schools should make a special card for CPR learners.

9 . One of the negative effects from the all-pervasive social media is that it has almost killed the reading habit. To change this situation, a group of IT professionals and engineers have come together to start the 'Let's Read India' movement in Maharashtra by taking their library to the people's doorstep.

Prafulla Wankhede, one of the founders of the campaign, says it's getting an overwhelming response. "Our primary objective is to bring this WhatsApp and social media generation back to books and make them better educated and more civilized citizens," he said.

Wankhede said their library van went to remote places lacking major facilities. "We want to reach out to every person who wants to read a book. We have three mobile libraries now. People can borrow books for a week for free with only one condition: the borrower should submit a 300 -word review about the book to be able to take a second book," he said. "Our objective is to ensure people read."

"Those who want to get books can connect through our social media website and app. This will enable them to know the locations of the mobile library that has GPS attached. Besides, there is a QR code for each book. The mobile library makes the weekly visit to the identified locations," Wankhede said.

Initially, “Let's Read India” Foundation had planned to start the initiative in Maharashtra, Goa and Madhya Pradesh, the plan was shelved because of the pandemic situation. "We are now focusing on Maharashtra," said Wankhede. "Once we grow in Maharashtra, we'll then shift our focus to the rest of the country." The foundation also plans to start a YouTube channel where well-known authors' speeches, interviews and reviews will be played.

"We not only offer books, we also suggest what should be read. Many people are really confused about their reading choices. If they are able to read the kind of books they want, it will help them in their academic and professional life," said Wankhede.

1. What is the purpose of the campaign?
A.To build mobile libraries.B.To advocate online reading.
C.To promote reading habits.D.To fight against social media.
2. The mobile libraries can be described as ________.
A.conventionalB.comfortableC.impracticalD.convenient
3. Why does the foundation plan to start a YouTube channel?
A.To shift the focus.B.To deliver speeches.
C.To better serve readers.D.To ensure people read.

10 . If you’re planning on travelling, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.

First of all, always check and double-check departure (启程) time. It is amazing how few people really do this carefully. Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten. My secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought she had said that the plane left at 10: 50. When I arrived at the airport, the clerk at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting.

The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards, it is still important to have at least a little of the local currency (货币) with you when you arrive in a country. This can be necessary if you are flying to a place few tourists normally visit. A few years ago, I was sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma. I flew there from London via (经由) Dallas, with very little time to change planes in between. I arrived there at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi and because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead. “Listen! I only take real money! ” the driver said angrily. Luckily I was able to borrow a few dollars from a clerk at the hotel, but it was embarrassing (令人难堪的).

The third and last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave. I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travel in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day.

1. According to the passage, it’s obvious that _________.
A.the author learns some rules of travelling from his own experiences
B.the author doesn’t plan his trips or journeys carefully
C.Englishmen like to wear heavy suits wherever they travel
D.the American taxi driver never travels to England
2. According to the passage, the driver was angry because _________.
A.the author gave him false money
B.the author did not give him the local currency
C.the author did not give him money
D.the author had no enough change
3. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The author tells people to choose warm places as their travel destinations.
B.You don’t have to take credit cards when travelling.
C.You should know more about the weather of the place you’ll visit.
D.You should take enough change when you travel to other countries.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.A few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey.
B.Always check and double-check departure time.
C.It is important to have the local currency with you when you arrive in a country.
D.To find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave.
