文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道,主要报道了巴黎的一家初创公司Neoplants开发了一种特殊的室内植物,这种植物的DNA被改造过,可以吸收室内空气中的有害污染物,从而改善室内空气质量。

1 . In a Parisian old shoe factory on the city’s outskirts, a new kind of life is taking root. Neoplants, a startup from Paris, has developed a special houseplant that could potentially help improve indoor air quality by removing harmful pollutants.

The plant is a modified variety of one of the most popular and low-maintenance houseplants. Its DNA has been altered to enhance its capacity to absorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air we breathe inside our homes. These VOCs include substances like formaldehyde, benzene. toluene. ethylbenzene, and xylene, which are commonly found indoors and can be harmful in large quantities.

The genetic tweaking also allows the plant to convert the absorbed VOCs into substances it can use. such as sugars and carbon dioxide, which then fuel its growth. While Neoplants’concept is quite promising, proving its effectiveness is a challenge.

Plant shops often claim their greenery can purify the air, but much of this belief stems from research conducted by NASA back in 1989. They found that houseplants could indeed absorb certain toxins. However, achieving the same level of toxin removal as simply opening a window would require an impractical number of plants   — anywhere from 10 to 1,000 per square meter.

So, does Neoplants’genetically modified houseplant offer a better solution? Field tests haven’t yielded definitive results yet, but there is hope for more conclusive testing in the future with the help of a new lab equipped with unique non-absorbent rooms that mimic real-life conditions . Additionally, the company is exploring potential applications for its gene-editing technology in areas such as carbon capture and phytoremediation, where plants are used to clean up contaminated environments

Neoplants is relying on patience and a bit of faith. It takes time for innovations to mature. “This will be the first time such a product exists.” says the company’s CEO. drawing a parallel to the early days of computers, which were not very powerful initially but still represented a significant breakthrough.

With Neoplants’ vision, the old shoe factory on the edge of Paris isn’t just a place where shoes were made; it’s where a novel approach to cleaning our indoor air is being cultivated — one that could someday make our homes healthier and more environmentally friendly.

1. What does Neoplants’genetically modified houseplant aim to do?
A.maintain its capacity easilyB.absorb VOC’s massively
C.alter its DNA completelyD.fuel its growth quickly
2. What can be inferred from this passage?
A.The absorbed VOCs can enhance the growth of the plant.
B.Opening a window can remove the same level of toxins as the Neoplants.
C.Neoplants will need powerful computers to make a significant breakthrough.
D.Conclusive testing needs conducting to achieve definite results.
3. What does the underlined term “phytoremediation” in paragraph 5 most likely mean?
A.The process of using plants to absorb nutrients.B.The process of using plants to purify the air.
C.The process of using plants to explore applications.D.The process of using plants to edit certain genes.
4. Where is the text probably taken from?
A.Science fiction.B.A scientific textbook.C.A news article.D.An art magazine.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了音乐融入数学教育可缓解焦虑,提升学生成绩,尤其利于基础算术学习,建议跨学科合作教学。

2 . It is thought that music can make maths more enjoyable, keep students engaged and help case fear or anxiety they have about maths.

To find out more, Turkish researcher Dr Ayca Akin, from the Department of Software Engineering, Antalya Belek University, searched academic databases for research on the topic published between 1975 and 2022. She then combined the results of 55 studies from around the world, involving almost 78,000 young people from kindergarten pupils to university students, to come up with an answer.

Students took maths tests before and after taking part in the intervention and the change in their scores was compared with that of youngsters who didn’t take part in an intervention. The use of music, whether in separate lessons or as part of maths classes, was associated with greater improvement in maths over time. The integrated lessons had the biggest effect, with around 73% of students who had integrated lessons doing significantly better than youngsters who didn’t have any type of musical intervention. Some 69% of students who learned how to play instruments and 58% of students who had normal music lessons improved more than pupils with no musical intervention.

The results also indicate that music helps more with learning arithmetic than other types of maths and has a bigger impact on younger pupils and those learning more basic mathematical concepts. Dr Akin points out that maths and music have much in common, such as the use of symmetry symbols. Both subjects also require abstract thought and quantitative reasoning.

Limitations of the analysis include the relatively small number of studies available for inclusion. This meant it wasn’t possible to look at the effect of factors such as gender, socioeconomic status and length of musical instruction on the results.

Dr Akin adds, “Encouraging mathematics and music teachers to plan lessons together could help ease students’ anxiety about mathematics, while also boosting achievement.”

1. How did Dr Akin conduct her research?
A.By launching a questionnaire online.B.By creating a data model.
C.By analyzing data worldwide.D.By surveying university students.
2. What were the students asked to do to reflect the effect of the intervention?
A.Take maths tests.B.Develop abstract thought.
C.Plan lessons with music teachers.D.Learn more basic mathematical concepts.
3. What does the author think of the research?
A.Overall.B.Sensitive.C.Subjective.D.Imperfect.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章从东西方历史的角度,讲述了龙文化的产生和发展,还分析了随着全球文化的发展,龙的形象如何逐渐演变和丰富。

3 . Dragons, a famous imaginary beast born from fantasy, are often present in stories in the west and east. In both cultures, dragons are generally recognized as massive creatures capable of flight. They have great power and are often associated with magical abilities. However, due to their different cultural roots and images, there exist significant differences in the way dragons are regarded in the west and east, particularly in China.

Chinese dragons most resemble snakes, and have four claws and no wings. They often have features of other animals, including carp, tigers, and eagles. In the contrast, Western dragons look like huge lizards with big claws and large bat-like wings, and are often shown with spines or rough scales.

In traditional Chinese culture, a dragon is a symbol of luck, power and high status. They can cause weather changes and bring rainfall to the fields to ensure rich harvests. They are considered divine creatures, which hold an important position as the head of the four spirits. Therefore, to symbolize their power, ancient Chinese emperors decorated their clothes with dragon patterns. These clothes are known as dragon robes. Many Chinese view the dragon as a national symbol, proudly referring to themselves as “descendants of the dragon”. In the west, however, a dragon symbolizes an evil creature that spreads violence and terror throughout the land. They are believed to be transformed by the devil, with the ability to breathe fire or spit poison. Many western tales show dragons being defeated and killed to protect people from danger.

Today, dragons continue to evolve, exceeding traditional boundaries and finding new significance in global culture. They are no longer associated with evil or good, but rather as complex characters with their own unique personalities and motivations. For example, Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon begins as a dangerous dragon but evolves into a misunderstood being with love and compassion. This challenges the idea of dragons as naturally evil, presenting them as complex beings with emotions and motivations.

1. What do western dragons and eastern dragons have in common?
A.They are huge and powerful.B.They have rough skin.
C.They are in the shape of snakes.D.They have big claws and wings.
2. What do we know from paragraph 3?
A.Western dragons are a symbol of authority and violence.
B.Dragons are believed to cause chaos in western culture.
C.Chinese dragons can control rainfall and breathe fire.
D.Dragons in China can protect people from danger.
3. What is new about dragons in today’s global culture?
A.They have more diverse feelings and characters.
B.They have complicated motivations with born love.
C.They are commonly regarded as adventurous creatures.
D.They tend to represent human spirits facing challenges.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.The Images of Dragons in Western Traditions.B.The Origin of Dragons in Chinese History.
C.The Magical Animals in Different Countries.D.The Dragon Elements in Global Culture.

文章大意:本文为一篇记叙文。文章讲述了一群高中生在老师的帮助下研发了用于去除水中的铅的过滤器,这体现了年轻人利用知识解决问题的能力及他们勇于承担社会责任的责任心。

6 . The next generation of scientists and inventors is already finding approaches to address society’s problems. A group of high school students and their instructor report a solution to the problem of lead (铅) pollution in drinking water — an inexpensive faucet (水龙头) attachment that removes this poisonous metal. Unlike conventional filters currently on the market, theirs includes a container made of eco-friendly plastic and indicates when it’s “used up” by turning the tap water yellow.

“A few years ago, I saw a video of a woman in Michigan turn on her tap water, and it came out brown.” says Rebecca Bushway, the project’s principal investigator. “That made me think — because there’s really no safe level of lead in drinking water, wouldn’t it be nice to have a water filter that could tell you your water is polluted, well before it turns brown because of lead?”

Bushway, as a science teacher, wondered aloud to her chemistry class if there was a little filter that they could make from inexpensive components to easily remove lead. The students were excited about the idea, and they started thinking about the project in 2020.

The students discussed designs for an attachment to screw (用螺丝固定) a filter onto a sink’s faucet. Then in the spring semester of 2021, they 3D printed the attachment and a 3-inch-tall filter housing, using eco-friendly plastic. They filled the containers with some chemical powder. Next, the students added a tiny spectrophotometer (分光光度计) with a single-wavelength LED to the bottom of the filter container. They installed an indicator light that turns on as soon as the detector identifies the yellow color of the lead iodide (碘化铅).

The team’s goal is to make and sell their filters for less than $1 each. Because the housings use eco-friendly plastic, the cost could trend a little higher, but the material would help reduce the overall environmental impact of the filter.

The process of developing the filter has been very fulfilling. “Ultimately, this experience has shown students they can make a difference to somebody, and that there are problems they can fix with science,” said Bushway.

1. What shows that the filter is running out according to the text?
A.The change of the water’s color.B.The change of the filter housing’s color.

A.Chemical powder reacts with the lead in the water.
B.A detector is fixed to identify the lead iodide.
C.The students have developed eco-friendly plastic.
D.The filter has an advantage over others in price.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To advertise a product to remove lead to readers.
B.To highlight the hardships the inventors encounter.
C.To praise the young for shouldering responsibilities.
D.To stress the importance of environmental protection.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了澳大利亚的两种动物:袋獾和鸭嘴兽。

8 . Since we’ve known about some cute animals, what about animals which aren’t so cute?

My favourite is a little creature called the Tasmanian devil. If you are out camping in Tasmania and come across one, the experience might scare you! Tasmanian devils hunt at night, so you won’t usually see them, but you may hear their loud cries when they are fighting or eating. The noise they make could wake the dead. Frightening! They are about the size of small dogs and look like rather large black rats. They also have a terrible smell! Their diet is mostly dead animals. Fortunately, despite their name, they are generally not violent towards people.

Australia also has some animals that many people have never heard of, for example, the duck-billed platypus. Is that some kind of bird? Not at all. While it may lay eggs in a nest like a bird, it’s really a primitive mammal, with a unique biology. Its eggs hatch after about ten days, and then the baby platypus nurses from its mother like all other mammals. Its nose looks like a duck’s bill, and it has feet like a duck’s so it can dive under the water, but it’s covered in hair. Do you know what’s really strange about a platypus? The platypus doesn’t use its senses of sight or smell to find food. It has a capacity to find food in the water by using electrical sensors in its bill. There are only a small handful of animals in the world that can do that!

1. What two things about Tasmanian devils can bother people most?
A.Their diet and violent behaviors.
B.Their loud noise and terrible smell.
C.They like fighting and are hard to hunt.
D.Their ugly appearance and terrible smell.
2. What do Tasmanian devils like to eat?
A.Small dogsB.Large rats.C.Dead animals.D.Violent animals.
3. What makes the way duck-billed platypuses give birth so different from other mammals?
A.It lay eggs like a bird.B.It nurses from its mother.
C.It can dive under the water.D.Its eggs hatch after 10 days.
4. What is the unique way used by duck-billed platypuses to find food?
A.By using electrical sensors.B.By using its senses of sight.
C.By using its senses of smell.D.By hanging out in the water.

9 . Floating markets, where goods are sold from boats, are a famous attraction among some Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand,Indonesia and Vietnam. They can date back to a time when water transport played an important role in daily life.

All these countries are located either on islands or on wet lowlands with broad river valleys. In the early days people mainly used boats to travel. Although the countries now have roads connecting all cities and towns, boats are still used for transport and trade by people along the rivers, especially by farmers.

Farmers bring their products in boats to the markets and sell them to local dealers directly from their boats, without setting up shops. That way can quickly sell their products and return to their home. The local dealers buy the products and sell them to shops in the neighbouring towns or to wholesalers (批发商) from big towns.Floating markets are also a big tourist draw.

The most famous floating market, and a tourist attraction is the one in Damnoen Saduak about 100 km southwest of Bangkok, Thailand. It is crowded with hundreds of sellers and buyers floating in their small boats selling and buying agricultural products and local food. The market opens in the early morning and closes about an hour before noon. In Vietnam, the biggest floating market in the Mekong Delta is Phung Hiep with hundreds of boats. The Cai Be floating market is another well-known one in the western part of southern Vietnam.

10 . It was at ten o’clock today that the first of all Time Machines began its career.I gave it a last check, and sat myself in the leather seat.I pushed the starting lever on the main panel forwards an inch then immediately backwards again. Looking around,I saw my laboratory exactly as before. Had anything happened? I thought my mind had tricked me. Then I saw the clock. A moment before,it was a minute or so past ten;now it was nearly half past three!

I drew a breath, gripped the lever and pushed it forwards. The laboratory went hazy around me. My niece came in to fetch something, maybe her handkerchief, apparently without seeing me.It probably took her a minute, but to me she moved like a rocket!

It is hard to explain the strange and unpleasant feeling of time travelling. It felt like I was being driven fast on a winding road.As my pace grew faster, the walls of the laboratory fell away, and I was left in the open air. Around me I saw trees growing like puffs of smoke; they grew, spread, and died in moments. I saw huge buildings rise up, then disappear like in a dream. I calculated that I was being pushed through time at hundreds of years a minute.

I had a strong urge to look at the random things that were being flashed before my eyes! I had thought about the risk of stopping the Time Machine many times. So long as I travelled at maximum speed, it didn’t matter. But if I stopped and the same space was being occupied by something else, we would be forced together and explode like a bomb! Like an impatient fool, I pulled the lever backwards hard. With a sudden jolt, the Time Machine was flipped on its side, and I was thrown through the air.

I was stunned for a moment, and then heard the sound of thunder. I was sitting in the rain in some mud next to the machine.“A fine welcome.”I said,“for a man who has travelled thousands of years to be here!“
