1 . Peter Kline has run over 100 marathons — a huge feat in itself. But what makes him so remarkable is that he has finished 45 of those marathons while pushing young people with disabilities in front of him. Kline wants them to know the joy of running too.
Kline started hitting the pavement when he was in his early 50s after running a 10K with his nephew. Eventually, he began running marathons — with the goal of qualifying for Boston’s famous race. And, years later, he did.
His friend Scott Patrick was diagnosed (诊断) with glioblastoma, a deadly brain cancer, and asked Kline to run the race to raise money for cancer research. Kline helped Patrick and other volunteers raise about $60,000. Patrick passed away the same year, but not before Kline gifted him the finisher’s medal.
Being able to help others through his beloved sport made an impression. Kline, now 66, told CBS News he knew of a father-son duo (二人组) who would run races together — the father pushing his son with disabilities as he completed the course. But, he wondered, “What about kids who don’t have a dad to do that?”
After being connected to a woman with two daughters who have cerebral palsy (脑瘫), he decided to run the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon in 2012 with one of the girls. The little girl loved it, and Kline said his mission to share his love of the sport “just started rolling”. He has named the mission, “Marathons with Meaning”.
The young people he pushes have ranged in ages from 8 to 32 and have many types of disabilities, from cerebral palsy to traumatic brain injuries. “They love it. It’s like their Super Bowl,” Kline gushed. “They absolutely love the sounds, the noises, the feelings. As for the other runners, they’re always very generous. They give them high-fives.”

The first time you give a speech is truly a special moment, a beginning of something special, and I will surely never forget the first time that I gave a speech.
As a kid, I was extremely shy and seldom said anything. When I was twelve and about to graduate from junior school, I remember that my teacher pulled me aside one day and told me to take part in an online speech. My first thought was that giving a speech didn’t sound like much fun, but finally I agreed.
As the morning neared 9:30 a.m., I sat in front of my laplop screen nervously. I clicked the link to join “Round One”, put my nerves aside, and smiled at the other faces on the screen as my name was called to perform. Slowly, I stood and began speaking. I could only think that the other participants felt as anxious as I did.
The Novice (新手) Speech Tournament is the first Speech and Debate competition of the year specifically for first-time competitors, and this year’s event took place on October 24. Speech Team Co-Captain Anna Sheehan, a seasoned speech leader, reported her Novice experience, “I remember leaving the competition even more excited to do speech because I had seen some great pieces and was eager to improve.” After experiencing Novice myself, I completely agreed!
Two Montrosians—Josie Marcucci and I—competed while Anna Sheehan and Lucy Stefani took part as judges. Although it took place online, the Montrose Speech Team did its best to follow the normal arrangement: At 8 a.m., we met in our virtual (虚拟的) team room for warmups to help cheer ourselves up before the big day. Next, we attended a meeting for some announcements (通告). Then, we were off to compete. In each of the three rounds, competitors had a chance to perform. In between rounds, we met as a team in our “room”. Before I took part, I went to my teacher for some practical help. And my teacher patted me on the back, smiling, “Calm down, and you will make it.”

4 . Competitive sports are a lot of fun. They help you stay healthy, meet new people, and teach you about teamwork.
Get in shape.
Being in shape will help you have an easier start to your sport season.
While you get ready for the start of your sports season, think of what you want to achieve. Your goals may be general, like making the team or getting in shape. But smaller, specific goals are easier to achieve and can build toward your bigger goal. Be sure to write down your goals and discuss them with your parent or coach—they can support you. If you reach your goal, set new goals to work toward. Having goals can be a great motivator!
Check your gear (装置).
If you’re returning to your sport, try on your equipment to make sure it still fits and works for you. If you’re new to a sport, ask your coach what you’ll need. You can buy your gear secondhand or borrow it from siblings or friends to save money. Make sure all your gear is clean and safe to use.

But surprisingly, with the loss of his legs, Fred gained a new passion for racing. Before his accident. he wasn’t really that athletic. He would just occasionally (偶尔地) play basketball. But that all changed after he was introduced to handcycling (手摇自行车运动). “When I saw it. I was like, ‘Oh, this is great. He wants to complete the Abbott Six-the world’s six largest marathons. One day, he said, “I’ll maybe even make it to the Paralympics.”
For those who might be following his journey, he hopes they will take some lessons from his story. “There will be ups and downs but the trend (趋势) is what’s important, focus on the good,” he said. “And also, take your big problems and divide them into small solutions, and then all of a sudden, your big problems turn into many small wins. ”

8 . Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your choice of sport might have great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses(高尔夫球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortages in some local areas.
In fact, there are many environment friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don't need any special equipment except a pair of good shoes; and you don't have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk can regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and control your weight better.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be "green gyms". They are better replacements(代替物) for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it's free.

Thanks for your question. As people often say, any exercise is better than none, but long-distance running in particular has a lot of benefits.
It is a great sport for beginners — you do not need a gym membership or any special equipment. Just a pair of good running shoes will do. Then keep it up. There is also no better way to know yourself and to see what you are capable of.
You are also somebody who worries about getting sick. Running will help you get fit and prevent diseases. It will give you good upper and lower body strength. Like any exercise, running increases the flow of blood and oxygen to your brain. It makes your heart stronger and allows more blood to flow around your body. It also strengthens your immune system and reduces the risk of serious health problems, as well as more common illnesses like colds. Besides, anybody who is feeling down can go for a run to cheer themselves up. Even a thirty-minute run will provide relief from aches or tension that you may be suffering due to stress.
If you’re new to running, here is some advice for you. It is important to warm up and cool down properly before and after running, so you do not hurt yourself. A warm-up gets your body blood flowing faster and prepares your body before you exercise. After a long run, you should jog slowly for ten minutes, then walk for five minutes. Such kind of warm down relaxes your body after exercise.

Dr. Martin
