It was my first time to ski and I had been persuaded to come along with a group of friends who had booked a hotel for us all. Everyone else there had at least some experience of skiing in the past and all throughout the flight to Geneva they were talking funny stories about past trips to towns and villages I hadn’t even heard of.
While I knew I was in for a really good time, a little part of me was wondering whether I had made a mistake by joining such experienced skiers for a week in the Alps(阿尔卑斯山), when I had never even had a single skiing lesson on proper snow, that is to say real snow.
We arrived at the hotel in the afternoon and my training lessons didn’t start until the following morning. There was no way that I was going to stay behind and watch everyone else go out to enjoy the slopes(斜坡)without me, so I grabbed my stuff and headed out with the rest of them. Harriet, a member of our group, took pity on me and offered to pair up, giving me some tips on how to get started.
I had been planning hitting the ski track for months and now I arrived and I was about to feel the rush. The excitement started to spread. But on this occasion, it really was my first outing, and I was seriously nervous. I always loved snow, I loved throwing snowballs with my friends as a kid. but now I felt I was out of my comfort zone and, after I equipped myself, I was shaking all over nervously.
I tried to go forward. For all of about ten meters, I fell to the ground again and again. My instructor, Paul, was near and he was trying too hard not to laugh. I was feeling a little bit ashamed. Again to my feet, again to the ground.

4 . There’ve been plenty of Tokyo 2020 headlines about Hend Zaza, the Syrian table tennis genius who, at 12 years old, is one of the youngest Olympians of all time.
But there are some striking personal stories on the other side of the age spectrum (年龄谱), too.
Oksana Chusovitina, a 46-year-old gymnast from Uzbekistan, impressively competed in her eighth Olympic Games this summer. Chusovitina, who competed in a sport dominated by teenage athletes, received a standing ovation (鼓掌欢呼) after performing in what she said would be her last Olympics. “I feel very good to be here. But this will for sure be my last Olympics, she told reporters. “I’m 46 years old. Nothing is going to change that. I’m alive, I’m happy, I’m here without any injuries, and I can stand on my own,” she added with a laugh.
Then there’s Australian equestrian (马术师) Mary Hanna, who at age 66 is the second-oldest female athlete in Olympic history and the oldest Olympian competing in Tokyo.
“Through their efforts, Hanna and Chusovitina are changing the conversation around age and agility. They’re proof that you can compete or put yourself up to a physical challenge way past what is considered your peak,” said Michael Stones, a professor at Lakehead University in Ontario, Canada, who researches healthy aging and physical performance. “It’s great that this year’s Olympics include so many younger and older athletes,” he told HuffPost. “They show that age alone is not an insurmountable (不可克服的) barrier to excellence in physical activities.”
These Olympians also lend the games some experience and maturity, especially in team sports, said Sandra Hunter, a professor of exercise science at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. “These older athletes can help guide the younger ones, particularly with all the mental and psychological challenges that we’ve seen,” she said. “They bring a level of maturity to the teams and surrounding athletes that allows the younger athletes to learn.”
“If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is compromise.” The quote from American writer Robert Fritz is highly consistent with the Olympic spirit as well as enlightening us on our way to success.

I arrived at the pool hall on Wednesday with a heavy heart. Teams from other schools were already suited and warming up by the pool or in the water. The bleachers (露天看台) were full.
“I don’t think I can do this.” I said, twisting the belt of my bag.
“You’ll be fine, and I will be right here watching.” Mom said, dropping an arm around my shoulder and squeezing.
I bit my lip and looked out over the other swimmers. “You sure?”
Mom leaned forward. “Remember, it’s just you. Don’t worry about any of the other swimmers. Just swim your race.”
“OK.”
The warmups and preparations were over before I knew it, and the first round of swimmers were up on the blocks.
I felt sick. I watched my competitors swim, and they looked so strong and skillful in the water. The events screamed by, one after the other. My knees shook as each event clicked closer to mine. The knots in my stomach twisted and coiled like a bag of ropes.
Then the one-hundred breaststroke (蛙泳) was announced.
Nerves choked my throat.
“Just swim your race. Don’t think about the other swimmers.” I repeated it over and over in my mind.
I bent forward on my block in line with the rest of the swimmers, waiting. My body tensed up like a spring. My heart pounded in my ears.
The buzzer (蜂鸣器) sounded. I sprang forward, diving into the water and kicking like a dolphin. Then my head broke free of the water. Just count strokes. I kept my eyes focused on the black line in front of me, ignoring the splashes of movement on either side. Pull. Breathe. Kick. I hit the end of the pool and then my first turn came. I took a deep a breath and turned over, pushing hard against the wall and bursting back the way I came.

I was the last one to finish the race.

It was cool and bright and just right for running. I was in the first few miles of a 10-mile race through some hills. Birds were singing on the trees. The soft wind was brushing my cheeks. I felt rested and springy. Despite the hills, I thought it was going to be a fine run.
Ahead was Blake, a student from Burke High School. He was running easily, too, moving along efficiently. The pace felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where he was; why bother concentrating on pace when Blake was such a nice pacesetter for me? I would overtake Blake later on when he used up energy.
So I ran closely behind him. The course headed north for five miles, wandered west for a mile, and then turned south again. The race was getting tougher. With three miles to go, it was beginning to be real hard work. My lungs were on fire, and legs felt like stone.
Blake overtook the boy in front of him. Apparently he knew the boy, for they exchanged a few words. Their brief communication worried me. Runners don’t chat during a race unless they feel really good, and Blake plainly was. There was still a noticeable bounce in his steps, but the springiness I had once possessed was gone.
Still, I was close enough to overtake Blake if he was tired, so I didn’t give up hope completely. We were approaching a hill, a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly determine who crossed it first.
As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Blake was moving away, first five yards, then ten, then more. There was no hope of catching Blake.
