1 . As the novel coronavirus rapidly spreading to about 70 nations, many countries are canceling their major sporting and cultural events.

Already, major domestic (国内的) events in China, including the National People’s Congress and the World Athletics Indoor Championships, have already been postponed (推迟). Now the rest of the world seems to be following suit.

The world of soccer is also being affected. In Italy, several matches in February were played behind closed doors (without spectators). Meanwhile, entire soccer leagues in Japan, South Korea, and China’s Super League have all been placed on hold (暂停). There is also the possibility that Euro 2020 — an international soccer tournament for European teams — could be cancelled. When asked about the cancellations, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said, “The health of persons is much more important than any football game. If games have to be postponed, then we have to go through that.”

The outbreak is also impacting cultural events around the world. Facing Europe’s largest COVID-19 epidemic, with over 2,000 confirmed cases (确诊病例) so far, Italy also cut short its iconic Venice carnival (狂欢节) and Milan Fashion Week show. The latter was being live-streamed from an empty theater.

Now, the biggest event in doubt is the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Held every four years, the event attracts hundreds of thousands of people and has not been postponed since 1944 — due to World War II. Set to begin on July 24, Japanese officials remain optimistic. In a press conference, Toshiro Muto, Tokyo 2020 CEO said, both the Olympics and Paralympics (残奥会) will go ahead as planned. He added, “The situation of the coronavirus infection is difficult to predict, but we will take measures [so] that we’ll have a safe Olympic Games.”

Speaking to the Washington Post about the Games, infectious (传染的) disease researcher Yvonne Maldonado said, “You bring many people together, and then you ship them back all over the world: That’s the perfect way to transmit. If you want to disseminate (传播) a disease, that would be the way to do it.”

On Feb 26, the World Health Organization said the virus was spreading faster outside China than inside for the first time, prompting (敦促) many countries to follow China’s strict isolation measures.

1. What does the underlined phrase “following suit” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Doing what you want.
B.Doing what you are told.
C.Doing what others are doing.
D.Doing what others don’t do.
2. What do we know about some events in different countries?
A.Venice Carnival was live streamed this year.
B.Euro 2020 will probably not be held as planned.
C.Many soccer matches were canceled in Italy last month.
D.Soccer leagues in Japan and South Korea played behind closed doors.
3. What would Yvonne Maldonado suggest to Japanese officials about the 2020 Olympics?
A.They should put it off.
B.They should give it up.
C.They should hold it as scheduled.
D.They should change to another city.

2 . Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourage international brotherhood. Not only was there the incident of tragedy involving murders of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by lesser incidents caused principally by minor national contests.

One country received its second-place medals with visible anger after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, as the losers disagreed with the final decisions. They believed that one of their goals should have been allowed and that their opponents' victory was unfair. Their manager was in great anger when he said: “This isn't hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension(停赛) of the team for at least three years.

The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia, after a disputable(有争议的) end to their contest. The game had ended in disorder. It was thought at first that the United States had won by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into the basket. It was the first time the US had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury (评审委员会) debated the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals.

Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism (爱国主义).

1. According to the author, recent Olympic Games have _______.
A.created goodwill between the nations
B.hardly showed any international friendship
C.caused only false national pride
D.led to more and more misunderstanding and hatred
2. What did the manager mean by saying, “...Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished”?
A.Hockey and the Federation are ruined by the unfair decisions.
B.His team would no longer take part in international games.
C.There should be no more hockey matches organized by the Federation.
D.The Federation should be ended.
3. Which statement best summarizes this passage?
A.Athletes should compete as individuals.
B.Different teams often have disputes when fighting for the first place.
C.Any team that has disrespectful behavior should be suspended.
D.The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.

4 . Brazil is the greatest football nation in the world. There are 170 million Brazilians. How many of them are football fans? 100 million! All of them think that they know all about football. This makes life very difficult for the Brazilian team managers. When things go bad for the Brazilian team, the newspapers would demand that the team manager should leave his job. “If we win, they put me in heaven,” a manager once said. “If we lose, they put me in hell (地狱).”

You can’t escape football in Brazil. There are football matches on every street and beach. On television, the results of football matches come before the main news programs. There are six television channels (频道) in Rio de Janeiro. On Sundays each channel shows a different football match.

Brazil is not the richest country in the world, but the government spends lots of money on football. It cost more than one billion pounds to prepare for the 1978 World Cup. That’s 10 pounds for every Brazilian man, woman, and child. And many Brazilians don’t earn as much as 10 pounds a week. Is it worth it?

“Brazil must have a great football team,” says one journalist. “If it costs one billion pounds, that’s all right. If the government doesn’t give us a good team, then it will become unpopular. Football is more than a game in Brazil.”

Football is more than a game in Brazil. This is certainly true in its largest city, San Paulo. The most popular team is Corinthians. Corinthians’ fans are the most loyal and emotional in Brazil. When Corinthians win, production in the Sao Paulo car factories increases by fifteen per cent. When they lose, it drops. At one time Corinthians won the national championship for the first time. For four days fans danced and sang in the streets.

Why are people so loyal to one football team? What makes a football fan? One man says, “Without Corinthians my life would be sad. Corinthians bring some joy and excitement into my life. We all need that, don’t we?”

1. In paragraph 1, what the manager said means _______.
A.he is respected by newspapersB.he will probably be killed by fans
C.he is judged on his team’s resultsD.it’s difficult for him to get good scores
2. All the following statements about the Brazilians and football are true EXCEPT _______.
A.all the Brazilians know all about football
B.football has an influence on politics(政治) in Brazil
C.the Brazilians spend a lot of money on football
D.Corinthians’ fans are always supporting their team
3. Some people danced and sang in the streets for four days in Sao Paulo because _______.
A.production in the Sao Paulo car factories increased
B.Corinthians won a national football championship
C.Corinthians won the World Cup
D.the newspapers put a team manager in heaven

5 . Breakdancing is close to becoming an Olympic sport after the organizers of the 2024 Paris Olympics suggested its being included in 2024. The other three sports—surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing—will all debut (面世) at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The organizers said the four sports had been chosen because they would reflect the city’s identity and help take the Olympics to the street. They said they wanted to deliver a Games that were in keeping up with the times and encouraged new audiences and attracted young people. Breakdancing is an example of a sport which can be played without the limitation of time and places in urban and other environments.

Breakdancing was one of the sports at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in 2018, and now could see its popularity greatly raised. But the International Olympic Committee (IOC) needs to approve (批准) the French suggestion before it can be formally added to the 2024 Paris Olympics sports programme.

Under new IOC rules first introduced to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Olympic host cities can select sports and propose them for inclusion in those Games if they are popular in that country and add to the Games’ appeal.

Antonio Espinós Ortueta, the president of the World Karate Federation said, “Our sport has grown rapidly over the last years. We believed that we had met all the requirements and that we had the perfect conditions to be added to the sports programme. However, we have learned today that we still haven’t had the chance to prove our value as an Olympic sport.”

1. What is mentioned about the coming 2020 Tokyo Olympics?
A.They will be much better organized.

A.It is the symbol of Paris.
B.It attracts people of all ages.
C.It can be played anytime and anywhere.

3. What does IOC do in selecting sports?
A.Give useful advice.
B.Make final decisions.
C.Offer enough support.
D.Give detailed explanations.
4. What do Antonio Espinós Ortueta’s words mean?
A.He didn’t expect the final decision of IOC.
B.He was confident about the future of breakdancing.
C.It is too difficult for a new sport to be included in Olympics.
D.It is impossible for breakdancing to be performed in Olympics.

6 . We’ve all been there: Just when you’re getting used to your new workout routine, suddenly your knee is killing you.     1     Before injury strikes, listen to these signs that might show your body needs some time off.

You’re always sore (酸疼).     2     But if you’re exercising regularly, you shouldn’t constantly be feeling sore. You should always give your muscles 24 to 48 hours to recover between training sessions. If you still feel sore, it’s possible you’re overtraining.

3     Anger, anxiety, and tiredness are also signs. It is known that exercise can make us happier because of endorphins — a stress-fighting chemical — in the brain. However, those endorphins are also accompanied by cortisol, a stress chemical. And when cortisol levels remain high for an extended period, they cause harm on mental health.

Your heart rate is abnormal. One of the best ways to tell if you’ve been overtraining is to check your heart rate. If you’re above your normal, then your body is not really ready for a hard workout that day.     4

The best thing about noticing these symptoms (症状)?     5     A little R&R (rest and recovery) is just what your body ordered!

A.You’re constantly tired or emotional.
B.Yes, you’ve over-worked yourself into an injury.
C.Fortunately, recovery is simple — just take it easy for a few days!
D.That’s one of the best ways to judge your readiness to exercise.
E.Sure, a bit of muscle soreness after some workout is totally normal.
F.It’s much easier to relax and check heart rate than it is to recover from an injury.
G.Doing the same activity over and over without proper recovery is going to cause injury.

8 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I first played ping-pong in our basement (地下室) at home. My brother and I asked for an old wooden table from my grandfather. It was painted green. Although it was very simple, it served its purpose every day. My father never really played any other sports with me, but ping-pong was one that he played quite well and it took me plenty of time before I could beat him. My elder brother was also a very good competitor.

When I got to university, I was happy to discover a ping-pong table in the common room. I spent a great deal of time there, often until the midnight. There were about three or four friends that I often played against. We were all at the same skill level. One of them had ever played in a tournament (锦标赛). A friend from Germany said his father had ever won the German national tournament. We took part in a tournament. My ranking (名次) is the third place, but I had beaten the first and second place winners when we had played for fun. I sometimes played with other friends who didn’t play ping-pong well, so I would use my left hand to give them an advantage. But before long I became so skilled with my left hand that they no longer had the advantage.

Later, I played in a ping-pong competition which was held by my university. I lost at first. But because it was double climination (双淘汰制), I went to the loser group. I beat all the players and then played against the student who had beaten me in the first round. Surprisingly, I beat him 3 times and won the competition.
