2 . How to Show Good Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship is behaviour and attitudes that show respect for the rules of a game and for the other players. But how to show good sportsmanship in detail?

Method 1: Interacting with Opponents

Don’t trash talk. When your competitive juices start flowing, it may be tempting to call members of the other team names or make fun of them. But you can’t win a game by running your mouth, and it only makes you look desperate.

1    . In the heat of a game, it can be easy to lose your temper, particularly if you’ve just gotten elbowed or the other team keeps scoring on you. Don’t let your anger affect your behavior.

Respect the other team’s effort.     2    , it’s important to recognize that they’ve put in plenty of hard work to prepare for the game, just like your team has. Having respect for the other team is crucial to good sportsmanship.

Method 2:     3

Be a team player. Even if you’re the best athlete on the field, you can’t win a game without your teammates. Everyone should share in team responsibilities, and do their part to ensure that the team is successful.     4    .

Support your teammates. Being a good sport means that you’re just as happy with their success as your own.

Listen to your coach. He or she is looking out for the good of the team, and sometimes, that means your role may be changed. Showing good sportsmanship means placing the team’s needs above your own, so you should trust the coach’s judgement.

5    , but if you just remember to put your team first and respect the rules and opponents, you'll be on the right track.

A.Respect the opponents
B.Control your temper
C.Relating to Teammates
D.Showing good sportsmanship may seem difficult at times
E.You shouldn’t care about your own performance more than the team
F.Whether they’re outplaying you or unable to keep up with your team
G.You may actually be able to learn something from your opponent

3 . Is running a marathon in under two hours possible? Will a human ever be able to run that fast? Currently, the world record for the 42. 195 km(26.219 miles)distance is held by Kenyan Dennis Kimetto. His time of 2:02:57 hours was achieved at the Berlin Marathon of 2014.

For many years, long-distance runners have been trying to get nearer and nearer to the magical mark of two hours. Studies published in the past by medical and athletic experts have come to the conclusion that running a marathon in under 2 hours can be done. They even see a time of around 1:57 as the fastest a human can ever run. However, we will have to wait at least a decade or longer for this to happen.

Many things must fit together to deliver an under two-hour marathon. An athlete would have to have the perfect body size and weight, the right running strategy and of course, the right nutrition. Today's most perfect runners come from Kenya and Ethiopia, countries that have dominated(统治)long-distance races for decades. East African athletes have long legs and lungs that can take in lots of oxygen. Training at high altitudes gives them a strong heart and a very large blood volume(容量).

Ideal weather conditions with cool temperatures and almost no wind will also be needed to attempt such a quick time. An ultra-fast marathon would only be possible on flat city courses, like Berlin or London, with few curves(弯道).

Since the beginning of the modern Olympic Games in 1896, athletes have tried to run long-distance races as fast as possible. In 1900, the marathon world record was around 3 hours. In the following 30 years, men were able to reach a mark of 2:30. As time went on, achieving faster times became more and more difficult. In the last 15 years, for example, the world record has improved by only 3 minutes.

On the other hand, some experts think that such fast performances will only be possible with the help of illegal drugs or substances(物质). In the past years, several East African runners have been tested positive and many of them banned.

B.perfect runners who can compete in a marathon

4 . One of the best parts of the school day is the time spent in the playground. It’s a chance to be with friends, run around and have fun. However, at the Rudyard Kipling Primary School in Brighton, things were getting too hard, so the teachers decided something had to be done. The school’s new rules, which restrict(限制)physical activities and encourage pupils only to touch if they are playing friendlier games, have attracted a lot of attention.

Most people say that they are a bad restriction. Parents of children at the school, in Brighton, East Sussex, talked about the bizarre rule —   saying their kids were now bored at playtime. A teacher for the school defended(辩护)the rules, saying, “We want to make sure the playground is a happy, safe and calm place where everyone can enjoy their lunchtime running around and getting the exercise that we know is important to them.”

Some people say that Rudyard Kipling Primary School’s decision is a good one because it makes the playground more fun for everyone. Not all children enjoy playing rough(剧烈的)games or sports at playtime. Friendlier games ensure everyone can join in. The teachers only have the pupils’ best interests at heart, so they should be trusted to make the right decision. Besides, if someone gets hurt in the playground, that                    could distract(分心)the teachers from other accidents.

However, some people think it’s an overreaction. Sometimes physical games can lead to injuries, but banning(禁止)such activities is unreasonable. In fact, it is only during physical games that you can build up your ability to recover quickly from falling over. Even if these physical activities aren’t your favorite way to spend break time, it’s difficult to see why they will be completely banned. Each pupil should be able to decide what they want to do. Besides, schools should be happy that their students want to exercise between classes as this will keep them fit and healthy, and teachers should encourage this, not prevent it.

1. What was the result of the tule made by the Rudyard Kipling Primary School?
A.It was made into law.B.It was supported by parents.
C.It encouraged students to do sports.D.It made the school widely discussed.
2. What does the underlined word “bizarre” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Simple.B.Strange.
C.Important.D.Reasonable.
3. What is one reason why some people think the school made a wise decision?
A.It saves more lunchtime.
B.It helps students pay more attention to their study.
C.It brings more fun to every kid.
D.It makes students more independent.
4. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.Physical games can injure kids.
B.Physical games are good for students health.
C.Teachers should do sports with students.
D.Restricting physical activities is unreasonable.

6 . You can’t imagine how terrible I felt at that time. A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.

I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps (圆圈) and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later told me that I was “not athletic”.

The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!

The night before my marathon, I dreamed that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.

Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust (重新调整). Not the start I wanted!

At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”

By mile17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Although my ankle was very painful, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.

By mile 21, I was so hungry!

As I came to mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.

I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.

Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels (世俗标签), I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.

1. How did he author feel a month before the marathon?
A.Anxious.B.Frightened.
C.Well prepared.D.Confident.
2. Why did the author mention the P.E. class in his 7th year?
A.To thank the support of his teacher.B.To amuse the readers with a funny story.
C.To show he was not talented in sports.D.To share a valuable memory.
3. How was the author’s first marathon?
A.He made it.B.He quit halfway.
C.He got the first prize.D.He walked to the end.
4. What does the story mainly tell us?
A.One is never too old to learn.B.Failure is the mother of success.
C.A winner is one with a great effort of will.D.A man owes his success to his family support.
