At Piedmont School, everyone wanted to be on the soccer team. Laura had dreamed of earning glory for the Falcons ever since she had witnessed her older brother scoring the winning goal. On the day she joined the team, she felt like she could fly.
Unfortunately, her joy did not last long. She spent most of the matches on the bench. Walking to the car after the last game, Laura’s mother asked if she was feeling fine. Laura kept quiet and tried to smile at her mother. Having spent yet another game as a reserve, Laura had not even broken a sweat. Laura also joked that she would have baked in the hot sun if she had played. Her mother assured her that she would have another chance to play. She also cheered Laura on. Laura could only shake her head as she climbed into the seat, back hunched and face down.
A few days later, Laura’s mother found she sprawled on the couch, watching music videos on her phone, so she tried asking Laura to watch soccer videos instead. Laura looked at her mother blankly, rolling her eyes. “They won’t help me and I can’t get better by myself,” Laura said.
Sighing, her mother sank down on the couch. “Laura, for every lock, there is a key. We just have to find it. What if I film you practicing to help you find ways to improve?”
“But the season’s over, Mum. No more practice, remember?” Laura said. Her mother looked at her resolutely and insisted that the best players keep practicing even when the season is over. Laura protested, “But to practice plays, I would need at least one other person to join me! It is difficult to do that alone.”
Laura’s mother patted her and said, “We’ll find that key too, but we have to start somewhere.” While Laura’s mother was searching her wallet for her gold key, she smiled gently at Laura. She gave Laura an assuring no d before passing her the key. “This key is a reminder for you to be strong and not give up. Let’s build something tomorrow.” Laura’s mother said.

Tyler, my son, has a passion for playing basketball. He always asks me to take him to the gym an hour before practice begins. I often have to convince him to leave the gym after practice is over. Despite not being the most talented player, he still won two trophies (奖杯), one for his team, second place and the other for himself, a special award.
The story of winning the two trophies began when he was ten years old. The first game of the season arrived. The gym was surprisingly crowded. I saw the happy look in my son’s eyes when he saw me sitting in the stands.
As I watched the other kids running up and down the court, I saw my son sitting on the bench. By the fourth quarter, Tyler hadn’t even touched the ball, and his team had won the game.
The games that followed were pretty much the same. The team kept winning, but Tyler barely touched the ball. He ran so hard when he was on the court, but when he got the ball, he would quickly throw it to a teammate. I would sit there with my heart pounding out of my chest.
On the way home from one of his games, I asked, “Tyler, do you still enjoy basketball?”
He replied, “I like basketball a lot. But I know that some of the kids play better than me, so when I get the ball, I just throw it to them. We are on the same team. It doesn’t matter who scores.”
Weeks of Tyler’s unending enthusiasm and devotion to basketball flew by. Never discouraged, he played hard and kept practicing. I watched him improve. He told me how proud he was to be on such a good team. They were undefeated until last Saturday.
It was the final, their toughest game yet. They played well but the other team were just too strong for them. The championship was slipping out of their reach. Tyler’s teammates started to lose heart.

9 . Feeling sleepy in the middle of the day? There are many reasons why we get sleepy in the afternoon. Bad lighting, a poor night’s sleep, a boring job, large (carb-heavy) lunches, and more can all contribute to head-bobbing at your desk or falling into a light sleep during a meeting. The best course of action would be to find the root cause of your sleep issue and fix it, but most of us simply head for the coffee pot or the cafe. Instead of that, try climbing some stairs.
Well, now exercise researchers have discovered that walking up and down lights of stairs for about 10 minutes actually gives you a more effective boost (提高) of energy than drinking 50 milligrams of caffeine greedily (the average amount of caffeine found in a cup of coffee, tea, or soda).
In a study called Stair walking, the researchers enlisted 18 “physically active” college women between the ages 18 and 23. The participants reported experiencing chronically poor sleep, adding up to an average of fewer than 45 hours of shuteye each week in the past few years. And they are often a lack of available time during the workday for a dedicated exercise session.
The researchers chose stair climbing as the exercise of choice. Walking up and down the stairs requires no specific clothing, travel time, or even a shower afterward. During the study, on some days the participants alternated (交替) between taking 50-milligram caffeine pills or a placebo. On the other days, they skipped the caffeine (real or otherwise) and climbed up and down the stairs, at a moderate pace, for 10 minutes.
At the conclusion of the study, the researchers acknowledged that there is more research to be done (when isn’t that the case?) but concluded that “A short period of low-to-moderate intensity stair walking has temporary energizing effects that exceed a low dose of caffeine for active young women with chronic insufficient sleep.”
So, the next time you find yourself nodding off mid-afternoon, why not give stairs a try?
