6 . More and more people around the world are joining in dangerous sports. Some people climbed the highest mountains; some traveled to unknown parts of the world; some sailed small boats across the largest sea. Now some people begin to look for new excitement.

Bungee jumping and motorcycle racing (摩托车赛) are quite thrilling sports. Bungee jumping only lasts for a few minutes or even seconds. You jump from a high place, about 200 meters above the ground, and there is a rubber band (橡胶带子) tied to your legs. When you jump down, the rubber band pulls you up. About 2,000,000 people around the world have tried bungee jumping.

Why do people join in these dangerous sports? Some scientists say that it is because modern life has become safe and it is not interesting. In the past, people lived in danger. They had to go out and look for food, and life was like a fight but was interesting.

7 . Cat-Cow, Crow, Downward-facing dog and Pigeon: these names might sound like animals but they are actually yoga poses.     1

What is yoga?

Yoga is exercise for the body and mind. It combines moving your body into different positions while focusing on your breathing. Yoga was first practiced around 5, 000 years ago in what is now northern India, where it was linked to the religion of Hinduism. For example, a yoga sequence was developed to greet Surya, the Hindu god of the Sun.    2    There are many different types of yoga but one of the most common is hatha yoga. This combines traditional yoga movements with breathing exercises.

    3

Yoga encourages you to connect your mind and body and to link your existence to the wider universe. Many people find this helpful because they are reminded of the “bigger picture”, which can make their worries or unhelpful thoughts feel more manageable. Yoga's focus on breathing and movement can be calming.     4    Elysia, aged seventeen, agrees. “I love yoga because it gives me peace and time to think,” she says.

What if my body isn't bendy?

Yoga isn’t just for gymnasts.     5    According to NHS England, yoga can make your muscles stronger, improve your flexibility and lead to better balance and coordination. Many professional athletes and sportspeople practice yoga. This convinced Joseph, aged eight, to try it. He told The Week Junior, “I wanted to try yoga because I love tennis and I know that Novak Djokovic says it helps him be the best and stops him from getting injured.”

A.How do I get started?
B.Why is it good for me?
C.It’s a skill that can be learned by anybody.
D.Take your time with these poses and keep practicing ones that you find difficult.
E.Learning how to move your body into these poses does take practice but your wellbeing is likely to improve.
F.However, yoga has now evolved and is practised all over the world by people of different faiths and backgrounds.
G.Research has shown that yoga can be especially helpful for young people's mental health by giving time out from daily distractions and boosting concentration.

Alpine skiing, 11 gold medals awarded

The disciplines include downhill, the fastest event; super-G, with more turns added; giant slalom (回转), still more turns; and slalom, the slowest and most technical event.

9 .

As college sports continue to be hugely popular and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) brings in large amounts of money, people have restarted the debate on whether college athletes should get paid.

Supporters of the idea believe that, because college athletes are bringing in audiences, they should receive some sort of compensation (补偿). In fact, the NCAA brings in about $1 billion income a year, but college athletes don’t receive any of that money in the form of a paycheck. Additionally, people who believe college athletes should be paid state that paying college athletes will actually encourage them to remain in college longer and not turn professionals as quickly, either by giving them a way to begin earning money in college or requiring them to sign a contract (合同) saying they’ll stay at the university for a certain number of years while making an agreed-upon salary.

People who argue against the idea of paying college athletes believe the practice could be disastrous for college sports. Paying athletes would turn college sports into a bidding (竞拍) war, where only the richest schools could afford top athletes, and most schools would be shut out from developing a talented team. It could also harm the camaraderie within many college teams if players become unhappy that certain teammates are making more money than they are.

Those against paying college athletes also believe that the athletes are receiving enough benefits already. The top athletes receive scholarships that are worth tens of thousands per year. They receive free food and textbooks, get travel bonuses and free equipment, and can use their time in college as a way to attract the attention of professional coaches. No other college students receive anywhere near as much from their schools.

While both sides have good points, it’s clear that the negatives of paying college athletes far outweigh the positives. College athletes have been compensated enough. Adding a salary would result in a college athletic system where only a few athletes are paid by some schools who enter bidding wars to sign them up, while most student athletics and college athletic programs suffer or even shut down for lack of money. Continuing to offer the present benefits to student athletes makes it possible for as many people to benefit from and enjoy college sports as possible.

1. It can be learned from Paragraph 2 that college athletes ________.
A.have earned what they are promised
B.tend to serve college longer when paid
C.should sign a contract to make an agreed-upon salary
D.prefer to stay at university rather than turn professionals
2. The underlined word “camaraderie” in Paragraph 3 is similar to “________”.
A.friendshipB.competitionC.spiritD.communication
3. People against paying college athletes believe ________.
A.schools would be unable to afford it
B.it could be harmful to college sports
C.no other college students receive benefits
D.students would value payments over achievements
4. What is the author’s attitude towards paying college athletes?
A.Uncertain.B.Satisfied.C.Unsupportive.D.Expectant.

10 . Indoor Skydiving

Have you ever dreamt of flying? Have you ever wanted to experience the excitement of skydiving, but didn’t want to jump out of a plane? Indoor skydiving has opened up a whole new world for you to try flying.

Indoor skydiving is an activity, simulating(模拟)the free fall of a skydive. That means you learn to fly in a column of air produced by a wind tunnel (风道) inside a limited area. Before flying, you need to wear certain equipment to protect you. And each of you is equipped with an instructor that helps you learn to control your body while flying. But you aren’t trained to be more aware in the sky as a normal skydiver.

To be an indoor flyer, you can be at all ages. Fear of height or lack (缺少) of experience won’t stop you from trying. The only real limitation preventing people from flying is weight limit. Countless physically challenged flyers have safely flown with the help of experienced instructors.

Although indoor skydiving gets its name from skydiving, the similarities between the two are actually very few. The one they are in common is in the sense that they both share the freedom of flying.

However, in traditional dives, skydivers usually step out of a plane from more than 10,000 feet high, while indoor skydiving just needs flyers to lean forward and lie on the air. Also, being an outdoor activity, skydiving depends on the weather. The wind, rain, or snow can cancel your plans to jump. Indoor skydiving removes this effect from the picture. Normally, a skydive lasts just between 45-60 seconds, but tunnels allow skydivers to fly longer and as much as they like.

While most people put skydiving in the must-do list, indoor skydiving is much more than that! What used to take skydivers tens of thousands of jumps and years of experience can be learned in a relatively shorter period of time. Skydivers could be trained at lower cost compared to being trained in the sky. Because people of all ages can fly, children are quickly becoming some of the most talented skydivers. Thus, all these will certainly benefit the development of skydiving.

1. What do indoor skydivers need to do before flying?
A.Jump out of a plane.B.Become aware of the sky.
C.Produce a column of air.D.Put on protecting equipment.
2. What may prevent people from trying indoor skydiving?
A.Their age.B.Fear of height.
C.Their weight.D.Lack of experience.
3. What do skydiving and indoor skydiving have in common?
A.The sense of flying.B.The cost of training.
C.The length of free fall.D.The dependence on weather.
4. Which of the following might the author agree with?
A.The future of skydiving depends on children.
B.Indoor skydiving is beneficial to skydiving.
C.Fewer people show interest in skydiving.
D.Indoor skydiving will replace skydiving.
