文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章主要介绍了在伦敦举办的滑板展。

1 . From its origins in the California hills in the US to its acceptance on urban streets worldwide, the history of skateboarding spans (跨越) seven decades over which it has developed from an unwelcome sport to an Olympic event in 2020. Now, a London exhibition is to show the path from those humble homemade boards of the 1950s to today’s hi-tech professional models.

The exhibition will feature about 90 rare and unique boards along with more than 100 other related objects, including safety equipment and magazines. Half of the skateboards will be on loan from the Skateboarding Hall of Fame Museum in California. A highlight will be a 1967 Bilbo board produced by European Surfing Company, which was set up at Newquay in Cornwall in southwestern England in 1965 and marketed the first skateboards in the UK.

Also on display will be the famous skateboarder Tony Hawk’s first professional model, from 1982, with its adaptations for the vert style of skateboarding which uses vertical ramps (垂直坡面) rather than level ground; early homemade boards from 1950s California modeled on the design of roller-skates and surfboards; and the first two models to feature a kicktail —the raised tail enabling skaters to turn or balance the board on the back wheels.

It will also feature Laura Thornhill’s Logan Earth Ski from the 1970s, the first women’s professional model. Sky Brown, who at 13 won bronze for Team Great Britain at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, is represented through her first professional model, the Sky Brown & Skateistan Almost model.

“Skateboards, often misunderstood as being just toys, are now hi-tech products responding to constantly changing urban environments,” said Jonathan Olivares, the show’s director. “This exhibition is centred around a single question: how did the skateboard get to positioning the skateboard as a truly unique object.”

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要通过两位有资质的私人健身教练,说明在TikTok上的不持续、不切实际的健身内容存在的问题。

2 . Today, many people are turning to social media for their fitness routines, with TikTok, one of the most popular platforms. Indeed, its fitness category has some 300 billion views. But are the posted works, exercises and challenges really safe and effective?

While fitness influencers can encourage people to become more physically active, which is a positive, the quality and accuracy of their content is a concern, according to a 2023 review in Frontiers in Public Health.

“There are a lot of unsustainable and unrealistic workouts on TikTok, and even some dangerous advice,” said Jess Brown, a certified personal trainer in Westchester, New York. “What’s more, much of the fitness information on TikTok isn’t backed by science or posted by fitness professionals. The workouts are usually generalized to anyone, too, and don’t take into account your health, your family history, your flexibility, your range of motion—the list goes on,” said Monica Jones, a certified personal trainer in Washington, DC.

One of the more popular TikTok fitness trends involves developing your abdominal muscles. These challenges often show an influencer doing one exercise or series of movements that, if repeated daily for a week or two, is promised to result in a sexy six-pack. “No way,” Brown said. “We’ve proven again and again that spot reduction isn’t a thing.”

“Unfortunately, there will always be trends centered around getting fast results, because those grab people’s attention. But it’s important to look at your fitness and health as a lifelong journey, not something you can achieve within 10 to 90 days,” Jones said.

How can you separate quality workouts from dangerous ones? First, check the information of the posters. They should be certified fitness professionals who have experience working with people. You also want a coach who emphasizes improving strength and health, not one who focuses on body type. A quality influencer should encourage mental well-being, self-care and the importance of listening to your body in addition to physical fitness.

1. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The problems of fitness content on TikTok.
B.The lack of sustainability on TikTok workouts.
C.The needs for personalized workout on TikTok.
D.The absence of scientific backing in fitness information on TikTok.
2. What do fitness influencers often promise in popular TikTok trends?
A.Sustainable workout routines.B.Long-term health improvement.
C.Certified fitness professional guidance.D.Easy exercise with immediate results.
3. Which of the following statements may Jones agree with?
A.Fitness should be a lifelong journey, not a quick achievement.
B.Fitness training should be specific to body type and flexibility.
C.Fitness influencers must prioritize fast results over long-term health.
D.TikTok workouts must promote mental well-being over physical fitness.
4. What does the author think important to evaluate a quality fitness influencer?
A.Personalized workout plans.B.Paying attention to detail in exercises.
C.Taking a balanced approach to fitness.D.Certification and reputation in fitness training.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章主要讨论了是否应该允许变性女性参加女子体育比赛。

4 . Lia Thomas, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, is an excellent swimmer. She often beats her rivals by tens of seconds, breaking records. Her success is based on three things. One is natural talent. Another is relentless training. And the third is biology. Although she identifies as a woman, Ms Thomas was born male.

On the eve of her biggest competition, Ms Thomas finds herself at the centre of the bad-tempered debate about whether trans women—males who identify as women—should compete in women’s sports. That, in turn, is part of a broader argument: should biological facts sometimes override people’s deeply held feelings about their identities? This newspaper believes it is almost always unfair to allow transgender women to compete in women’s sports. The advantages bestowed by male puberty (青春期) are so big that no amount of training or talent can enable female athletes to overcome them.

Florence Griffith Joyner’s 100-metres world sprinting record has stood for three decades. A male matching it would not even make it to the Olympics, let alone the final. Much of the male advantage is granted by testosterone (睾酮,睾丸素), a powerful anabolism steroid (合成类胆固醇) whose levels rise sharply in male puberty. For many years many sporting bodies, following the lead of the International Olympic Committee, hoped to cope with the issue by allowing trans-women to compete in women’s events provided they took testosterone- suppressing drugs. But the science suggests this does not level the playing field. Suppressing testosterone in adults, it seems, does little to undo the advantages granted by a male adolescence.

Sports must therefore choose between inclusion and fairness; and they should choose fair play. That does not mean that trans-women would be barred from all sport. One way to make that clear would be to replace the “men’s” and “women’s” categories with “open” and “female” ones. The first would be open to all comers. The second would be restricted on the basis of biology.

Sport is public, and results can be measured objectively. That means the argument that the material facts of biology should sometimes outrank a person’s subjective sense of identity is easier to make. But it applies in other areas, too.

1. What is the text talking about?
A.Men has many advantages over women.
B.Fairness should be guaranteed in sport.
C.Whether trans women-males should be allowed to compete in women sports.
D.How to dismiss the unfairness between trans women-males and women.
2. What does the underlined word “suppressing” in para.3 mean?
A.dampen
B.balance
C.increase
D.encourage
3. Which one is not true according to the text?
A.A man who doesn’t make it to the Olympic may set a record in women sport.
B.Transgenders should not be allowed in sports.
C.Fairness matters more than inclusion in the sport.
D.Many advantages of males are due to testosterone.
4. What will be talked about in the continuous part?
A.How to deal with the unfairness between transgenders and females.
B.Other factors that cause trans women-males’ performances to override women’s.
C.Other fields that is suitable for the argument that the material facts of biology should sometimes outrank a person’s subjective sense of identity.
D.Other authorities’ attitude to the fairness in sport.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章主要介绍了19岁的美国网球运动员Coco Gauff在美国网球公开赛中获胜,成为自1999年以来最年轻的赢得大满贯冠军的美国人。

6 . Coco Gauff used to visit the Grand Slam tournament (大满贯锦标赛) as a kid to see her idols Serena and Venus Williams. Now she is a champion there herself. On Sept 9, the 19-year-old from the US won her first major women’s singles title at the 2023 US Open (美国网球公开赛).

After an average start, Gauff surged to a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over her bigger, stronger opponent, Aryna Sabalenka, from Belarus, who became the new world No.1 the day after the tournament ended.

Unlike the Williams sisters, who have obvious force and power, Gauff is small and slim. But she moves fast on the tennis court. Forbes magazine said, “She is the quickest and perhaps already the best returner of impossible shots in tennis history.”

Even though Sabalenka is a very powerful hitter, it felt like she had to finish each point four or five times, as Gauff’s defense was so perfect, noted The Telegraph. This ended up frustrating Sabalenka and caused her to make 46 unforced errors.

Gauff thus became the first American teenager to win the US Open since Serena Williams, then 17, in 1999. When asked about “taking the torch” from the 23-time Grand Slam winner and the similarity between their tennis careers, Gauff told ESPN, “Serena is Serena. She’s the greatest of all time... I’d hope to do half of what she did. But I’m not going to compare myself to her. She’s some one that I look up to.”

Now, Gauff’s big win has left tennis fans wondering: When’s her next Grand Slam? That’s no easy task. Two of the past four US Open women’s champions were teenagers at the time, Canada’s Bianca Andreescu in 2019 and the UK’s Emma Raducanu in 2021, and neither has come close to repeating their success yet. But one thing about Gauff is certain — that at just 19 years old, the sky’s the limit.

1. What do we know about Gauff’s performance in the game at the 2023 US Open?
A.She made 46 unforced errors.B.She was leading from the start.
C.She defeated a stronger opponent.D.She became world No.1 afterwards.
2. According to the text, what are Gauff’s advantages?
A.Her force and power.B.Her speed and defense.
C.Her figure and height.D.Her services and attacks.
3. Who is “the 23-time Grand Slam winner” mentioned in paragraph 5?
A.Aryna Sabalenka.B.Bianca Andreescu.C.Coco Gauff.D.Serena Williams.
4. What does the underlined sentence “the sky’s the limit” imply in the last paragraph?
A.It is hard for Gauff to push back her limits.
B.Gauff will consider switching to other sports.
C.Gauff has potential for greater future success.
D.Teenage sportsmen often fail to continue their success.

7 . Your Brain Was Made For Walking

If a president, a legendary philosopher, and one of the bestselling authors of all time credited the same secret for their success, would you try to follow it too? What if the secret was something you already knew how to do?     1

Get walking! It’s not just some people who made a case for it as a prime creativity booster.     2     A Stanford University study found that participants were 81 percent more creative when walking as opposed to sitting. According to the study, walking outside — versus on a treadmill — produces the most novel and highestquality analogies in participants who walked and then sat down to do creative work.

The movement aspect of walking is obviously key. You’ve probably heard the phrase “Exercise your creativity”, which refers to the brain as muscle. Our creative mindset is triggered by physical movement.     3

But the scenery is almost as important as the sweat. The National Human Activity Pattern Survey reveals that Americans spend 87 percent of their time indoors. Being inside, you’re more likely to stagnation (停滞), the antithesis of energy.     4     Just by going outside, you are stepping out of your habitual surroundings and your comfort zone, which is necessary if you want to open your mind to new possibilities.

5     Engage more closely with your surroundings for the next four weeks. Turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations and natural sounds, to notice the way people move. Walk not just for exercise. Walk for wonder.

A.Without energy, you can’t wonder or create.
B.Actually you might do it every day as well.
C.Exercise your mind as building your muscle.
D.So why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking?
E.This is why walking with a friend or alone feeds creative thinking.
F.Disconnecting from multimedia increases problem-solving performance.
G.Researchers have traced connections between walking and generating ideas.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,文章阐述可能造成过度运动的原因、并介绍一些如何避免因过度运动造成身体损伤的策略。

8 . Endless studies show the physical, mental and longevity-based benefits of working out, while plenty suggest that avoiding activity is bad. But headlines about someone collapsing after a row always stick in the mind. So, how risky is training too hard?     1

The NHS recommends that healthy adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity — but doesn’t suggest where to stop. This is because the ability to handle excess exertion (过度努力) depends on many varied factors.

The exact cause of “overtraining”, in the sense of doing too much over an extended period, is still being debated.     2     Others suggest the intestinal microbiota (肠道菌群) are involved. Whatever the case, it can hurt the rest of your life, making you moody, tired, or injury-prone.

The best advice is to pay attention when you lack energy or feel unwell and back off a bit. If you are a runner, this can also help with the common complaint of shin splints (胫骨骨膜炎), or more serious stress fractures, which are tiny cracks in the bone itself. The latter, which can be due to a sudden increase in training intensity, won’t heal until you ease off.     3

“The obvious risk factors are linked to impact and exertion,” says Steve Hoyles, a personal trainer and gym owner. “Running is a high-impact activity and analysis shows that inexperienced runners suffer an average of 17.8 injuries per 1,000 hours, whereas in gym users the average is 5.3 injuries per 1,000 hours.     4     Combining these with a form of resistance training would be helpful. Strong muscles, bones, and connective tissues are more resistant to injury than weaker tissues, so prioritise some form of strength training, regardless of your exercise of choice.”

5     By easing in and increasing the difficulty gradually, you will learn to listen to your body, which can help to warn you if something does go wrong. By not thrashing yourself from the start, you will learn to love exercise — and do it for the long haul.

A.The story is similar for men and women at risk of stroke.
B.So do your best to avoid them by not pushing too hard, or too fast.
C.Some experts theorise that it’s all about the central nervous system.
D.Swimming and cycling are low-impact but offer limited strength benefits.
E.And is there a way to make sure you never cross that red line into dangerous territory?
F.If you don’t have existing problems, the chances of something going wrong are very low.
G.Exercise will improve your quality of life and almost certainly your chances of living longer.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章主要讲的是巴黎年轻运动员利用跑酷来节省能源。

10 . After taking a few steps back, Hadj Benhalima rushed toward the building, pushed himself upward with his foot against the wall and stretched out his arm. At the peak of his jump, he flipped off a light switch, and the bright lights of a nearby barbershop went off immediately.

This is what Hadj and his friends have been doing for the past two years: swinging around Paris and switching off wasteful shop signs at night, in an effort to fight against light pollution and save energy. And they are all enthusiastic about Parkour — a sport that consists of running and jumping over urban obstacles.

While climbing other people’s property to turn off their lights may strike some as a form of trespassing (非法入侵), the Parkour athletes insist their activities are only about enforcing seldom-respected rules.

More than a decade ago, Paris City Hall issued orders requiring stores to turn off all signs and window displays from 1 am to 6 am, but they are widely ignored with little consequence. “for 10 years there has been no follow-up, no control, no punishment,” said Anne-Marie Ducroux, the head of the National Association for the Protection of the Sky and the Night Environment.

That is why Hadj and his friends have taken matters into their own hands. The group often gathers in the so-called Golden Triangle neighborhood, in western Paris, which is the center of French luxury.

Enforcing the orders in place of the authorities certainly enters a legal grey area. But the Parkour athletes say all the police officers they have met during their rounds have allowed their action — as long as it causes no damage.

And it seems that their efforts have produced the desired result, because Hadj says he has noticed that in recent months, several shops have stopped leaving their lights on after his group targeted them. He hopes others will follow suit. “At least, I’ll sleep better,” he said.

1. What are Hadj Benhalima and his friends trying to do at night?
A.To practice their Parkour skills.
B.To remove possible urban obstacles.
C.To turn off unnecessary store lights.
D.To ensure the safety of their neighborhood.
2. What can we learn about the rules set by the government?
A.They are too strict to follow.
B.They have achieved the desired effect.
C.They put great pressure on stores.
D.They are not carried out effectively.
3. What is the government’s attitude towards the Parkour athletes’ act?
A.Worried.B.Supportive.C.Doubtful.D.Unconcerned.
4. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Why Parkour is so popular among young people in Paris.
B.Why it is difficult to fight against light pollution in Paris.
C.How the lighting of shop signs affects the night view of Paris.
D.How young people in Paris help save energy through Parkour.
