2 . Poetry Slam is a type of competition where people read their poems without props(道具), costumes or music. After performing, they get scores (0-10) from 5 judges. The judges can be anyone——they don’t even need to be poets! Scores are awarded based on how much each judge likes the poem.     1     Your poem doesn’t need to be a specific form of poetry. With that in mind, here are some common rules you’ll find in the competition.

Make it original. The written piece must be original.     2

Time. Each poet has three minutes to perform. While reading your poem, make sure you finish it within three minutes.     3

Simple.     4    Read and perform it for family and friends before completing. Ask them what is clear and what is not. Choose appropriate themes, like relationships, family-social problems, etc. Your poem should be clear and convey a message.

Rhythmic. Your poem should have a rhythm(韵律)that shows through your performance. A slam poem moves the audience through different emotions.     5

A.Poets lose points for failing to meet limit.
B.The purpose of this judging process is to attract everyone to take part in it.
C.Your poem should be able to reach your audience the first time it is heard.
D.The highest and lowest scores are dropped and the middle three are kept.
E.The poem performed for the competition needs to be your own work.
F.How the poem is performed is at least as important as the content if not more.
G.Watch other Poetry Slams for encouragement, to get feedback and start competing in your own Poetry Slam.

3 . It is very obvious that some of the world's top-performing athletes have and feel something deep inside their core that regular athletes simply don't.     1     and are constantly pushing themselves to become better than yesterday. These athletes are the types of people that inspire and motivate other people to really give it their all and if you analyse them you will see that no matter how great they are, they are constantly trying to improve something new that is going to take them to the next level.

First of all, the pursuit (追求) of health and fitness should always start with goal setting.     2    , they have an exact picture of what they are trying to reach and they make sure that their goals are concrete and measurable, so they always have an idea of how far they are from their goals.

These athletes don't limit themselves when it comes to their health accomplishments.     3     even though they really don't know how they are going to reach them at first. They know that by setting high goals their motivation levels will explode and they will be even more fired up to find a way that will make them reach their “impossible” goals. For these guys, nothing is impossible when it comes to health and fitness.

4     They push themselves as hard as they can and constantly try to reach new levels of success. For the outside world, it might be hard to understand how they can push themselves this hard, but for these super athletes, it is just a game.     5     that they don't even see it as work, they see the whole thing as fun.

A.Last but not least, they are extremely excited and driven by their goals.
B.They always give it their all.
C.Their goals excite and motivate them so much
D.They try their best to shape their bodies
E.Compared to regular athletes who don't set concrete (具体的) goals and monitor them
F.This is what really fuels and drives them when training
G.They set really high goals

4 . Rachel sat on the back steps, pounding her fist into her softball (垒球) glove and staring at the old tire swing in the backyard. Tryouts for the softball team were next week, and she desperately needed someone to act as catcher while she worked on her pitching (投,击). Unfortunately her father was away on business, and her mother was embroiled in final exams. Her mother was so wrapped up in studying that she barely had time to eat. Rachel wondered what to do as she woefully stoked her dog Kit.

Her grandfather came around the comer of the house and stopped when he saw Rachel. “Why the long face?” he asked. “Pitching tryouts are next week. Grandpa,” she explained. “And I need to be in top form-four girls are trying out for only three pitching positions. But there's no one around who can practice with me.” She tossed the softball to Kit, who smartly leapt into the air and easily caught the ball with her teeth. Kit eagerly ran back to Rachel and placed the ball at her feet.

Grandpa offered to help. Rachel swallowed hard. Her grandfather had injured his hip and had to stay in a wheelchair now. She certainly didn't want to cause him further injury by hurling fast pitches at him, but how could she refuse his offer without hunting him?

Her grandfather slowly moved his wheelchair into the backyard and told Rachel to stand where he pointed. Rachel obeyed quickly, and Kit followed her. “Take a look at that tire swing. Rachel. It looks like the batter's (击球手) strike zone, wouldn't you say?” asked her grandfather. Rachel eyed the swing and nodded slowly. She said, “So if my pitch makes it through the tire, I'm almost certainly throwing a strike. Everything else is probably outside the strike zone.” Her grandfather smiled and added, “We can always raise or lower the tire to simulate (模拟) the strike zones of taller or shorter batters.” “But what about a catcher?” asked Rachel. “I don't want to keep fetching my own pitches.” “I've got the perfect solution to your problem,” said her grandfather, who moved forward to throw Rachel's softball across the yard. “Go get it, Kit!” he shouted. The excellent dog ran after the ball, picked it up in her jaws, end bounded back with her prize. Rachel gave him a grateful hug and said, “Grandpa, I think my chances of making the team just improved one hundred per cent!”

1. The word “embroiled” in the first paragraph means __________.
A.involvedB.replacedC.confusedD.served

5 . William Purkey, a well-known professor of education, once said, "Dance like no one is watching, love like you'll never be hurt, sing like no one is listening, and live like it's heaven on earth." It seems like the perfect life philosophy (哲理)---and one I've learned to apply to running over the year.

But I didn't always feel this way. In my early days, when I weighed 240 pounds, I ran like everyone was watching---and judging. If I was on a run and saw a car approaching, I'd stop and pretend I was looking for something I'd lost. I bought the high-tech gear and clothes that I thought would make people believe I was a runner. And I didn't know if the expensive shoes I was wearing were the right kind for me---I just wanted to look like I fit in with this group.

To be honest, I felt a certain satisfaction in believing that someone was watching. I really thought that other people cared about my performance. The best example of this was a combined, two-lap marathon(马拉松长跑)in Florence, Italy. As I approached finishing line, the crowd began to cheer. I was surprised. Here I was, thousands of miles from home, and the Italians were shouting for “IIPenguino.”

About 20 yards from the finishing ,the truth set in when the winner of the full marathon went past me as I was finishing the marathon No one was cheering for me. no one probably even noticed that I was finishing. I couldn't help but smile at my own illusion of self-importance.

That's when I realized I had been running for every reason except the right one. I ran to make other people happy, ran to live up to their expectations. But no one was watching---no cared. So I decided I was going to run for me---just me---and gained a new enjoyment from the sport I hadn't truly experienced yet. I've learned to run like no one is watching.

So if you see me at race, and I look like a 60-year-old guy wadding(蹒跚) along, don't worry. I'm fine. The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.

A.she smiled at her own achievement

A.tell us to live a life of our own

6 . On Wednesday, nearly 300 kids will take part in the National Spelling Bee. Fewer will make it to the following day’s semifinals, where one mistake means elimination(淘汰). I’d bet that many of them will be silently praying—not on the first word. I knew it because I was there 17 years ago.

I was 14 year old then. My mother and I had flown from Kentucky to Washington, but she was no strange to the capital. My older sister had already competed at nationals.

When my sister was 14 and I was 12, we trained together. We began with the Suggested List given out at school—hundreds of words printed on a poster that folded up like a map. When the words along the creases(折痕) began to disappear, we bought additional spelling bodes.

Sometimes my mother tested us, reading words most English teachers wouldn’t know how to pronounce, let alone my Indian-born mother. When she pointed out the misspelled words, I blamed her accent for my errors!

When it was my turn, I approached the microphone and waited for my first word.

The announcer was somewhere to my left, a man who pronounced clearly. “Barbican,” he said.

It seemed that my competitors were secretly complaining at the relative ease of my word. Would they laugh at me if I couldn’t spell it? Would my mother be disappointed in me? That last syllable could go two ways: C-A-N or C-O-N. Which one was right? Finally I decided on C-O-N.

Of course, I was eliminated and guided to the Comfort Room, where parents couldn’t enter. Inside, recent losers were sitting around a table abundant with junk food.

We casually mentioned the words that defeated us, like a special ceremony to welcome each new arrival. Then we changed the subjects if we’d already moved on from missed words and lost opportunities.

Eventually, I went out and saw my mother.

“Well,” she said, “I guess you won’t be doing this again.” Yes, next year I would be 25 and not allowed to take part in the competition.

7 . It's the start of a new year, when your fitness goals are set and you engage in the challenge.     1     Their standards of “too big” are not even achievable in their lifetime, let alone a few months of training, which brings my tips.

Set realistic goals! The process of building muscle is an absolutely slow one that requires strong will to gain. Consistently causing protein synthesis (合成)in specific muscle fibers will allow muscle to develop. However, all individuals are not equal in the process.    2     Gaining muscle will happen quickly to a new gym-goer, but take a long time for someone that has been training for years.

Stick to specific training for the goals you set to achieve.     3    This will require you to restrict the diet, and it will prevent you gaining muscle. Diet reflects the training load. The training reflects your goals. It's like swimming upstream, think strong, fast and flexible. If you are running a marathon, the goals are different and train accordingly!

4     Fat has taken some time to develop, so it will not be lost overnight. Allow the hormonal triggers (生理诱因)in the body to work more efficiently to regulate volume of food. Taking out additional sugars is one of the most important steps to regulate volumes of food to switch off desire for food.

Once a goal is reached, do not go back to what you did before. When people finish their transformation, the hormone profile is very weak to fat deposition (沉积)。Every training session should be a step toward a lasting transformation, with a diet improving the level of exercise.     5

A.Don't try to achieve too much at once.
B.Why do so few people see their goals through?
C.Give yourself a realistic timeline when it comes to fat loss.
D.Keeping running slowly leads to very big changes over time.
E.Appreciate that you are taking time for your own development.
F.Place restrictions on your diet and follow good food eating patterns.
G.Also, it depends on how long you have been training to achieve muscle growth.

8 . This is Ella Stevens who, at just 13 years old, is fighting for a chance to drive for the most famous team in Formula One-Ferrari(法拉利一级方程式赛车).

This fall Stevens faces a series of challenges, on and off track at the Paul Ricard circuit in France, with the ultimate prize a place on the famous Ferrari Driver Academy as its first female racer. “It’s a very good opportunity for me,” Ella, already a British karting champion, tells CNN. “We have to do a few fitness tests in the first phase so that they can see our driving.”

The Academy is, in fact, a breeding ground for future racing stars. Its current crop includes Mick Schumacher, the son of legendary Ferrari driver Michael, Enzo Fittipaldi, whose grandfather Emerson was a double F1 world champion, as well as Arthur Leclerc, the younger brother of Ferrari’s current FI racer Charles.

On the face of it, it’s no place for a 13-year-old girl from a small village in England—who already has a mountain to climb as a female in a sport still dominated by males. After all, a female has not raced in Fl for more than 40 years, and just six women have taken part in a grand prix(大奖赛)weekend.

But Stevens is being supported by a popular figure in the F1 community, Rob Smediey. He worked as a Ferrari engineer for more than a decade and is now teaching Stevens through his own Electroheads Talent Academy.

Smediey describes Ferrari’s search for a potential female racer as a “huge step”. “Having a major player in the sport, with such a rich history as Ferrari, leading on this has to be applauded”, he tells CNN. “It’s absolutely amazing that they want to do this and they’re taking positive action to increase the gender diversity within the sport.”

1. What will Ella win after fighting off a series of challenges?
A.She’ll become a karting champion.
B.She’ll have to pass a few fitness tests.
C.She’ll drive for Formula One-Ferrari.
D.She’ll become the first female racing champion.
2. Why is Mick Schumacher mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A.To make people believe he’s a famous racer.
B.To show how he became a F1 world champion.
C.To introduce that he was once a double FI world champion.
D.To prove Ferrari Driver Academy is home to the promising racers.
3. The underlined word “dominated” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to
A.wonB.placedC.ruledD.grasped
4. What’s the best title of the text?
A.Ella Stevens: the first female racer
B.Ella Stevens: a promising racing star
C.Formula One-Ferrari: the world top race
D.Formula One-Ferrari: a race without female

9 . You can run pretty much anywhere, with pretty much no equipment. So it must be easy to start-just put one foot in front of the other, right?

Not quite.

Starting a new training program, like most things, is stepping into unfamiliar area.     1     . Most people start out too hard, which leads to unnecessary tiredness and possible injury; or they just bum out,   feeling that the last thing they want to do is go out for another heavy,   painful run. Getting past that early period is the key to both running's benefits and pleasures.

2     You may want to start running to make your heart stronger, to up your endurance for other sports, or even just to fit into your tux(晚礼服,)again. Those are all worthy goals and setting them is a valuable aid to getting where you want to go.

If you like a challenge, your goal might be running the local 5K, or something more ambitious, like finishing a Tough Mudder obstacle run or qualifying for the Boston Marathon. A typical beginner who trains properly—without overdoing it — can safely finish a 5K after about three months.     3

Whatever you decide to aim for, committing to it will help your progress greatly.     4     . While a short,   easy run a few times a week is better than nothing,   it's not nearly as exciting as looking up at — then reaching — the next level.

Then don't get ahead of yourself.     5     . And gradually you can become a good run beginner.

A.Figure out why you're running.
B.The new training program will pay off.
C.And it is possible for a marathon after a year.
D.Otherwise you tend to make no further progress.
E.That is a remarkable achievement for a run beginner.
F.You should resist the urge to run too hard, too much, or too often.
G.You're eager but unsure, excited but potentially easy to make errors.

10 . Are you trying to find the best time for exercise?     1     Follow these tips to figure out what fitness routine works best for you.

Dawn, dusk or dead of night — when’s the best time to work out? Well, that depends on when’s the best time for you, because the benefits of physical activity depend upon how consistent you are.     2     But if you’re not a morning person, it may not work for you to try to get up at dawn to work out. The key is to do what’s most likely to work for you consistently.

3     If you find that working out too late in the evening keeps you from falling asleep easily, shift your exercise session earlier in the day or try less intense, more mindful forms of movement.

To stay motivated, choose activities you enjoy. If you’re a social person, do something that engages you socially. Take a group exercise class, join a recreational team or walk with a group of friends. If you prefer having time alone, walking, swimming or biking solo might be a better fit for you.     4

There are so many choices.     5     Having a variety of fitness activities to choose from may keep you from getting bored or burnt out.

A.The truth is, it’s personal!
B.Don’t limit yourself to just one.
C.There are other important considerations.
D.Use your body clock as a guide to when to go for a walk.
E.You might have heard that the best time to exercise is early in the morning.
F.If you’d like to spend more time with your family, find an activity you can all do together.
G.If your schedule isn’t predictable (可预测的), you may need to be flexible and have a plan for various times of day.
