1 . What Are the Physical Benefits of Exercise?
Exercise is often thought of as activities that help a person lose weight or prevent weight gain. Having a body that is slimmer and trimmer is certainly one of the physical benefits of exercise, but there are many others.
Exercising can help strengthen the muscles.
Diet pills may help a man shed weight but they will not help him build or strengthen his muscles. The physical benefits of exercise are generally experienced simultaneously.
Working out can make the bones stronger.
Exercise also strengthens bones, which becomes more important the older a person gets. Bones go through a natural process of breaking down the rebuilding.
Many people are concerned with looking older. Slowing and reversing the effects of aging are benefits of physical exercise. Cellulite (皮下脂肪团), for example, can make a young woman appear older than she is.

2 . Kung fu is one of the most popular topics of discussion among foreigners talking about China. As a discipline of kung fu with the largest number of practitioners in China, tai chi is gaining popularity worldwide. Tai chi is sweeping the world thanks to its deep cultural roots and the health benefits coming from practicing it.
The philosophy of tai chi features the concept of yin and yang, which is typical of Confucianism and Taoism. Tai chi also takes in ideas from traditional Chinese medicine, including anatomy(解剖学) and physiology. It is a practice that connects hardness with softness, and it is a perfect example of traditional Chinese culture.
Through lasting practice, learners begin to feel the positive impact(影响) of tai chi on their health. Unlike other kung fu practice that focuses on attacking and defending against enemies, tai chi focuses more on shaping good characters and keeping fit. By practicing tai chi, people will feel an improvement in their physical and psychological health by developing a balance between yin and yang within their bodies. This is similar to Western medicine’s improving people’s self-healing ability and immune system(免疫系统).
Tai chi is playing an important role in presenting Chinese culture to the rest of the world, acting like a bridge between China and other countries. Recent years have seen a lot of international communication on tai chi. In provinces like Hebei, Henan, Shanxi and Shaanxi, where tai chi teaching and learning are particularly active, local governments and non-governmental institutions often organize activities and competitions for learners and fans to attend and participate in. Large sporting events hosted by China such as the Asian Games and Olympics have featured tai chi performances or contests. These activities have opened a window for the outside world to know more about tai chi, paving the way for its overseas wide spread.
Today, tai chi not only belongs to China, but also to the whole world and to everyone who loves it.

5 . All parents know that young children are always energetic, eager to run, jump and play. Turning that natural energy into competitive sports can help keep kids active and healthy as they grow. Competitive sports such as soccer, track, basketball and swimming can also help kids learn important life lessons about teamwork and fair play.
Learning How to Compete
Joining in sports teaches children and teenagers how to compete in the real world. As they grow older, they'll face competition in school, in the workforce and other areas of life. But these competitions don't have to be negative(负面的)or unhealthy.

7 . Last year, I raced the Acura Ten Miler in Toronto. With 1-2 miles left, I noticed a female runner ahead of me who was weaving (穿行) in and out of a group of people, looking pale. Realizing something was wrong, I found a police officer and told him about it, and waited until she was close enough that I could point her out. He immediately called for an ambulance. I ran off and wondered how many people passed me, but I knew I did the right thing.
This Saturday, I raced the Canada Day 5K in Burlington. I’ve raced the course many times. My friend Monica and I went together with a goal to run competitively. I wanted to finish faster than I did in June, when my 5K time was 21:57. I felt it realistic to beat that time.
When the starting gun sounded, I went out fast and happened to run shoulder to shoulder with Monica’s daughter, but I soon pulled ahead. Shortly after, though, I heard “Please help me” from behind. Monica’s daughter is athletic, but she’s learning to run faster with her asthma (哮喘). Knowing that she had trouble, I stopped.
We finished the last 2K together. It troubled me when some runners passed me, and I had to stop to walk with her for a bit. But I thought making sure she was okay was more important, so I talked to her through the rest of the race. We finished together and cheered for her mom as she crossed the finishing line.
At last, my time was a bit longer than I wanted, but I was okay with that. If I had based my time on my age group’s winning time, I would have met my goal time. But I thought I made the right decision to help this girl get to the finishing line safely. For me, that was what mattered on Sunday morning. There will always be another race.

8 . Teenagers’ fitness is now a major concern, and physical exercise is very important. It reduces stress and improves fitness. Exercise makes your body strong, and helps you to keep the right body weight. Sports scientist Dr. Helen Lopez offers the following advice to teenagers:“First, you need to find out your present level of fitness. Then you can design a programme that will help you become healthier.”
Dr. Lopez suggests that there are three levels of fitness that need a change of lifestyle.“Overweight”means that the person gets very little exercise and often has a serious weight problem. “Inactive” means that the person does not join in many physical activities, but is not seriously overweight.“Active”refers to people who take part in sports and other physical activities, but do not have a high fitness level.
According to Dr. Lopez, overweight teenagers should work out to keep healthy.“Ride a bike, play volleyball or basketball for a while, and go for a twentyminute walk each day. All these will help to burn calories.”Inactive teenagers should do similar activities, but add some bending and stretching exercises, such as pushups and situps, starting with twenty of each a day.“Inactive people can take a little more exercise than overweight people because their bodies are stronger,”Dr. Lopez said. The same rule applies to active teenagers.
Dr. Lopez suggests one hour a week or more on running and other forms of intensive exercise, together with fifteen minutes a day spent on stretching and bending activities.“These are really important in order to prevent injuries,” Dr. Lopez said. Some weighttraining and other bodystrengthening exercises could also be planned in the programme in order to increase the person’s strength.

9 . The astronauts working on the International Space Station, the ISS, have started their zero-gravity preview of the World Cup match on Thursday, June 26, between the United States and Germany.
NASA astronauts Steve Swanson and Reid Wiseman and European astronaut Alexander Gerst, called out from Germany, showed off their moves in a soccer exhibition aboard the orbiting lab recently. An American video released today shows their performing space bicycle kicks, headers and, as players tend to do here on the earth, celebrating happily after scoring goals.
NASA’s humanoid (仿真) robot Robonaut 2, which is designed to help astronauts perform, even gets into the spirit, waving its arms this way and that.
The weightless action tells a key World Cup game on Thursday in Brazil featuring the two teams currently at the top of the match’s so-called “group of Death”.
The winner will win the group and move on to the single-elimination (淘汰) “knockout stage” of the World Cup, while the loser may go home, depending on what happens in Thursday’s game between Ghana and Portugal, the other two teams in the group. Two teams from the group will advance. If the U. S. and Germany tie, they both will move on to the next stage.
Swanson, Wiseman and Gerst are obviously fond of the World Cup. The three space-flyers also played micro-gravity(微重力) soccer in another video that NASA posted on June 11, the day before the World Cup kicked off.
“We want to wish all the teams and fans on the ground and in Brazil a great World Cup,” Gerst said in that video, “Have fun and have peaceful games. 10 . Hosting the Olympics is costly in both infrastructure and money. The 2012 and 2014 Olympics cost upwards of $16 billion. That was merely to create the various buildings needed for the games.
Berlin is a perfect example. It hosted the Olympics in 1936. Afterwards, the Olympic Village was left to crumble in the surrounding wilderness. Recently, funding has been approved to turn the former athlete residences into new apartments. This could breathe new life into the 135-acre site.
The Olympic Village in Lake Placid
Most people entering this place are in a lot of trouble. The complex, first built in 1980, no longer welcomes athletes. Instead, it houses prisoners. It is the Federal Correctional Institution, Ray Brook. The facility originally housed about 1, 800 athletes.
The Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles
This building used to host weightlifting as well as boxing and wrestling matches. It was first constructed in 1924. After the Games, it continued to host boxing and wrestling matches.
The National Aquatics Center in Beijing
This building was built for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and is commonly referred to as the Water Cube.
