5 . Almost no one knows the world of competitive climbing like Janja Garnbret, an Olympic gold medalist and eight-time world champion. Having risen to the top of the sport, the Slovenian now is using her platform to raise awareness of the “cultural trap” in climbing. She says it is contributing to a widespread issue with eating disorders.

The problem is from an outdated idea that weighing less means you climb faster. Such a mindset has created an environment where young athletes start skipping or cutting down on meals, she says, sometimes to disastrous effect. Despite not having issues with eating disorders herself, she is more than aware of friends and fellow competitors who have damaged their bodies in the pursuit of a thinner figure.

“I have to recognize that weight does have some role to play in the sport. I also want to win, but I’m a strong believer that you can do climbing, or any sport, in a healthy way. Luckily I didn’t fall into this trap.” She says.

“I was trying hard to help them get out of it, but it didn’t work. It was really hard for me to see them destroying themselves, mentally and physically.” It was experiences such as this that inspired Gambret to post a message on the social platform in July 2023 about eating disorders. The post sparked a huge response throughout the climbing community and attracted support from the likes of US rock climber Sasha DiGiulian.

In her message, Garnbret spoke about Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) — a syndrome (综合征) that occurs when someone of any gender has overtrained and/or undereaten for a long period in an attempt to improve their athletic performance, often without knowing the dangers of failing to compensate (补偿) for the energy they consume in training, racing and their daily lives. Left untreated, medical experts say REDs can damage an athlete’s bone health, immune system, and psychological health, as well as his athletic performance.

1. What does the “cultural trap” in the text refer to?
A.The defeat of eating disorders.B.The pursuit of a thinner figure.
C.The idea of keeping daily meals.D.The mindset of climbing to the top.
2. Why did Garnbret decide to post the message on the social platform?
A.She used to fall into the cultural trap.B.Her efforts to help dieters were in vain.
C.Her achievements deserved to be shared.D.She wanted to receive support from DiGiulian.
3. What may lead to REDs according to the text?
A.Severe mental problems.B.The habit of overeating.
C.Over-exercise for a long time.D.The poor athletic performance.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Road to a World ChampionB.Rising to Fame on Social Media
C.The Challenge of Climbing with REDsD.Warning against Cultural Trap in Climbing

7 . NPR’s STUDENT PODCAST CHALLENGE IS BACK — WITH A FOURTH — GRADE EDITION!

Microphone? Check. Headphones? Ready. A story you just can’t stop talking about? Got it! Yup, it’s time again for NPR’s Student Podcast (播客) Challenge. And we’re here to announce the opening bell of year six of this annual competition.

In our first half-decade, we’ve listened to podcasts from more than 80,000 young people all over the country. Students have deeply poured into their microphones personal stories about their families or their identities and serious issues, like how changing climate is impacting lives. On our end, we’ve listened to your feedback each year — great suggestions that have brought our ongoing College Podcast Challenge, and a special prize last year for the best podcast about mental health.

This year, we’ve got a big new change: Since the beginning, the contest has been open for students in grades five through twelve. But this year we are introducing our first-ever fourth grade contest! The sixth annual Student Podcast Challenge is now open for entries and will close on May 3, 2024. Our judges will choose winners in three categories: grade four, grades five through eight, and grades nine through twelve.

As in the past, entries must be submitted by a teacher, educator, or tutor who is 18 years or older. And don’t forget all the tips, advice and lesson plans we’ve compiled over the years, especially the rules around the maximum length of eight minutes, and about the use of music. The podcast should be completed independently. After years of listening to student podcasts, we’ve learned that shorter is better.

8 . Your Brain Was Made For Walking

If a president, a philosopher, and a famous author credited the same secret for their success, would you try to follow it too? What if the secret was something you already knew how to do?     1     Here’s what Friedrich Nietzsche wrote: “It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth.” Thomas Jefferson: “Walking is the best possible exercise. Habituate yourself to walk very far.” And Charles Dickens made his point with uncharacteristic brevity: “If I could not walk far and fast, I think I should just explode and perish (死亡).”

2     Get walking! It’s not just these three great minds who made a case for it as a prime creativity booster. Researchers have traced numerous connections between walking and generating ideas. A Stanford University study found that participants were 81 percent more creative when walking as opposed to sitting.

3     You’ve probably heard the phrase “exercise your creativity”, which refers to the brain as muscle. Our creative mindset is triggered by physical movement, which is exactly why walking feeds creative thinking.     4     Our brains work harder to process in different environments, so walking outside fosters our ability to obtain new ideas, to take in new sights, sounds, smells and flavors. Research has shown that immersion in nature, and the corresponding disconnection from multimedia and technology, increased performance on a creative problem-solving task by a full 50 percent in a group of hikers.

So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking?     5     Walk not just for exercise. Walk for wonder.

A.In fact, you probably do it every day.
B.Are you still sitting there reading this?
C.The movement aspect of walking is obviously key.
D.But the scenery is almost as important as the sweat.
E.In fact, you might not be aware of its true significance.
F.Engage more closely with your surroundings for the next four weeks.
G.Make a commitment to producing exceptional creative work in all your pursuits.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was never a fast runner and thus I always didn’t like running. Throughout my childhood, whenever we competed in the 50-meter run, the 400-meter, or any other type of race, I would always end up with the last one among all the athletes. Therefore, twenty years later, when I entered into my first official running race—a 3,000-meter challenge in my city—at age 38, I certainly didn’t expect to win or earn any prize.

I learned about the race from my friend Jim. He told me that the race was aimed at raising money for the unfortunate patients in a hospital and encouraging the patients and their families to be brave. Since it was a heartwarming program, I showed up, paid the entrance fee and moved over to the starting line. Before long, someone spoke into a microphone. “Anyone weighing over 200 pounds comes down to the scale (秤), please.” Knowing I was over 200 pounds, I walked down to the scale: A man told me to stand on it. “Two hundred and three pounds,” he said. Then he wrote down the race number and pinned (把……别在) it on my back. Out of curiosity, I asked him why he did so, and then I was told there would be an award ceremony (仪式) after the race. One award was for the first finisher in the over 200-pound group, and this special award would be announced at the end of the ceremony.

Then started the race. Not realizing there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds, I gathered all my strength to run in my burning heat. Although other runners gradually passed me along the way, I kept moving forward as fast as I could and struggled to make it to the finish line. Despite the tiredness, I was satisfied, for I could try my best to help those in need by running. Shortly after the race, the award ceremony began and several awards were presented.

注意:所续写短文为一段;词数应为80左右,注意衔接。
Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced.
