6 . Runners need to move 15 per cent faster on a treadmill(跑步机) to burn the same number of calories as jogging outdoors, research reveals.

Researchers from Milan University analyzed the difference between running outdoors and on a treadmill in 15 physically fit males with an average age of 21. The participants completed a sprint(短距离快速跑) for 30 seconds followed by 30 seconds of recovery for a total of 15 minutes both outdoors and on a treadmill. Oxygen use and exercise intensity were measured after both types of running.

The findings were published in the journal of Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism. Results revealed that when on a treadmill, runners use significantly lower amounts of oxygen, suggesting less effort is required. Therefore runners must move 15 percent faster on a treadmill to burn the same amount of calories as exercising outdoors, the study stated. The study authors wrote, "A 15 per cent increase in running speed during a period of stopping and starting often in high intensity treadmill training session is the best possible solution to reaching the same physiological responses as an outdoor training session.

Although the study did not speculate why treadmill running appears to be needing less effort and energy, previous research suggests the moving belt of a treadmill moves joggers forward, causing them to move faster. Exercising indoors also means gym-goers do not have to fight with steep hills or wind resistance.

Michael Silverman, director of rehabilitation and wellness(康复科) at Northern Westchester Hospital in New York, said, “Outdoors, you are changing surfaces constantly, fighting the wind, and making quick and sudden starts and stops, which will lead to increased caloric burn.” Shake magazine reported. "And while we don't recommend running in extreme temperatures, it is worth noting that your body burns extra calories to regulate your body temperature," he says.

1. Where can you find the specific findings of the study?
A.In Paragraph 2B.In Paragraph 3C.In Paragraph 4D.In Paragraph 5
2. What can we know about the study?
A.Its participants were all 21 years old .
B.Michael is one of the researchers.
C.It revealed why treadmill running consumes less calories .
D.It took oxygen use and exercise intensity into consideration .
3. Why does running on a treadmill seem easier according to the study ?
A.The runners need less energy.
B.The runners can usually get enough oxygen .
C.The moving belt pushes joggers forward .
D.The intensity of running on the treadmill is more stable .
4. What does the underlined word “speculate” mean ?
A.concludeB.researchC.opposeD.doubt

8 . Pillow fighting in its natural state is a display of chaos, a safe-ish outlet to most children. You grab the nearest pillow and whip it at the nearest body.    1

But pillow fighting has been appropriated for high school students as a real sport in Ito, Japan with the set rules. The All-Japan Pillow Fighting Championship consists of two teams of five players each side. Before the match begins, all team members pretend to sleep beneath the quilt on individual futons (垫子).    2    They cross the dividing line, grabbing a pillow as they go.

The pillows are designed and produced specially according to strict size and weight regulations. They're filled, not with feathers, but with rubber to achieve the required weight and bounce.    4    The youngest player so far recorded was 9, the eldest 75.

10 . Sixteen brave runners recently gathered in the Russian village of Oymyakon, also known as the world’s pole of cold, to compete in the coldest official race in history.

Oymyakon is the coldest permanently inhabited place on Earth, with temperatures constantly dropping to under -50 degrees Celsius in winter time. This place is so cold that a person’s unprotected face can suffer frostbite(冻伤) in a matter of second. Oymyakon can barely be called livable, let alone suitable for a marathon, and yet at the beginning of this year, 16 runners gathered here to take part in a series of extreme races.

On January 5, the brave runners — aged 21 to 71 and very well-trained — competed in bone-chilling marathons for 5, 10, 20, 30 and 42 kilometers across the frozen taiga(泰加森林) of central Yakutia. At the start of the run, the air temperature was an almost unbearable -52 degrees Celsius, and by the time the first and only runner reached the 39km mark, it had increased to -48 degrees Celsius.

“We could see entire amazement in the eyes of tourists who traveled here from Australia, Taiwan, Japan and India to watch the world’s coldest race,” runner Sargylana Neustroyeva told The Siberian Times. “This was our first try at organizing the extremely cold marathon. Next year we are definitely doing another race, and all athletes from around the world are welcome!”

“We wanted to make running in -450C and colder more popular, and to show that athletes can adapt to extremely low temperatures” champion runner Yegor Abramov added.

The world’s coldest race was organized by Alexander Krylov, head of Turuu Tour agency. He plans to do it again next year, hopefully with more brave runners able to endure the extreme winter temperatures of Oymyakon.
