The Chinese UN representative on Monday said Beijing aims to hold a green Winter Olympics in 2022, in     1     green power will be used in all venues     2     （seek）carbon neutrality（碳中和）．

Zhang Jun, Chinese representative to the UN, reaffirmed     3     promise during a UN General Assembly debate on sports for development and peace. “We will hold a green Olympic Games and prioritize     4     （ecology）consideration, resource conservation and environmental friendliness by developing and     5     （carry）out a low-carbon work plan; ” Zhang said. “With the work plan, green power will be used in all winter Olympic venues, ” he explained.

Zhang said, “China will continue to promote openness in Olympic Games, and through it, we will     6     （strength）sports cooperation and cultural exchanges between China and the other     7     （country）of the world. ”

He said, “China will create a new window for promoting the Olympic spirit     8     the exchanges among civilizations.     9     （beside）, China will support integrity in hosting the Olympic Games, tighten oversight of the preparations and adopt zero tolerance for doping（兴奋剂）so that the Beijing Winter Olympic Games     10     （be）as clean and pure as ice and snow”.

3 . Badminton was known in ancient times; an early form of the sport was played in ancient Greece. In India, the game was called “Poona” during the 18th century, and British Army officers stationed there took a competitive Indian version back to England in the 1860s, where it was played at country houses as an upper class game. Isaac Spratt, a London toy dealer, published a booklet, “Badminton Battledore — a new game” in 1860, but unfortunately no copy has survived.

The new sport was launched in 1873 at the Badminton House, Gloucestershire, owned by the Duke of Beaufort. During that time, the game’s official name became “Badminton”.

Until 1887 the sport was played in England under the rules popular in India. The Bath Badminton Club standardized the rules and made the game applicable to English ideas. The basic regulations (规则) were draw up in 1887. In 1893, the Badminton Association of England published the first set of rules according to these regulations, similar to today’s rules. They also started the All England Open Badminton Championships, the first badminton competition in the world, in 1899.

Badminton World Federation (BWF) was founded in 1934 with Canada, Denmark, England, France, the Netherlands, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, and Wales as its founding members. India joined as a member in 1936. The BWF now governs international badminton and works in cooperation with regional governing bodies to improve the sport of badminton around the world.

While originated in England, international badminton has traditionally been controlled by a few Asian countries, plus Denmark from Europe. China, Indonesia, South Korea and Malaysia are among the nations that have consistently produced world-class players in the past few decades and influenced competitions on the international level.

4 . What would it be like to live on the moon? Students in the 2021 Future City competition were challenged to find out. Nine middle school students from Houston, Texas, took the grand prize home in the international competition.

Middle school teams from 37 regions in the United States, as well as Canada, Nigeria and China, took part in the 29th annual competition, which began last fall. The students used their STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills to create a lunar habitat 100 years in the future.

“In our city, we make full use of our SLR-MAP system, which stands for Smart Lunar Resources Management and Processing System,” said Mohammad Ali Rizvi, one of the winning students.

Extracting minerals and other resources on the moon helped the team with organic solutions to maintaining life on the planet, including providing enough oxygen and water, as well as hydrogen for fuel. When asked if they would like to live in their lunar city in the future, the students were excited and passionate about the potential relocation from the earth. They state “Living on the Moon” was the theme of this year's Future City competition, an annual event designed to encourage middle-school students to develop STEM skills.

Syeda Batool, the team teacher, encouraged the students to use their brains and provided practical advice for their project. The students then elaborated on their ideas in a 1,500-word essay. They created a model of their city with recycled materials and a brief video presentation. They also took part in an online Q&A session with technical judges.

“The most important thing we learned from this experience was teamwork,” said Mohammad Hani Mirza, who is a seventh-grader. “That's one thing we were missing because we all came from different backgrounds with different ideas, and we worked together to create one beautiful city.”
