文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了虽然体育运动中,男女是分开的,人们口头上说女人不如男人强壮,但是一些事实证明男人并不总是比女人更强壮更快。

1 . In sport the sexes are separate. Women and men do not run or swim in the same races. Women are less strong than men. That at least is what people say. Women are called the weaker sex, or, if men want to please them, the fair sex. But boys and girls are taught together at schools and universities. There are women who are famous Prime Ministers, scientists and writers. And women live longer than men. A European woman can expect to live until the age of 74, a man only until he is 68. Are women’s bodies really weaker?

The fastest men can run a mile in under 4 minutes. The best women need 4.5 minutes. Women’s time are always slower than men’s, but some facts are a surprise. Some of the fastest women swimmers today are teenage girls. One of them swam 400 metres in 4 minutes 21.2 seconds when she was only 16. The first “Tartan” in film was an Olympic swimmer, Johnny Weissmuller. His fastest 400 metres was 4 minutes 49.1 seconds, which is 37.9 seconds slower than a girl 50 years later! This does not mean that women are catching men up. Conditions are very different now and sport is much more serious. It is so serious that some women athletes are given hormone injections. At the Olympics a doctor has to check whether the women athletes are really women or not. It seems sad that sport has such problems. Life can be very complicated when there are two separate sexes!

8 . SYDNEY : As they sat sharing sweets beside a swimming pool in 1999,Shane Gould and Jessicah Schipper were simply getting along well, chatting about sport, life and “anything else that came up”. Yet in Sydney next month, they will meet again by the pool, and for a short time the friends will race against each other in the 50-meter butterfly (蝶泳)in the Australian championships at Homebush Bay.

Gould, now a 47-year-old mother of four, has announced she will be making a return to elite competition(顶级赛事)to swim the one event, having set a qualifying (合格的) time of 30.32 seconds in winning gold at last year’s United States Masters championships. Her comeback comes 32 years after she won three golds at the Munich Olympics.

Schipper, now a 17-year-old from Brisbane with a bright future of going to Athens for her first Olympics, yesterday recalled (回忆) her time with Gould five years ago.

" I was at a national youth camp on the Gold Coast and Shane had come along to talk to us and watch us train,’’ Schipper explained.” It seemed as if we had long been good friends. I don't know why. We just started talking and it went from there."

"She had a lot to share with all of us at that camp. She told us stories about what it was like at big meets like the Olympics and what it’s like to be on an Australian team. It was really interesting. ”

Next time, things will be more serious. “ I will still be swimming in the 50m butterfly at the nationals, so there is a chance that I could actually be competing against Shane Gould,” said Schipper, who burst onto the scene at last year’s national championships with second places in the 100m and 200m butterfly.

9 . Running is often tiring and a lot of hard work, but nothing beats the feeling you get after finishing a long workout around the track. But while it’s long been believed that endorphins (脑内啡), chemicals in the body that cause happiness, which are behind the so-called runner's high, a study suggested that there may be more to this phenomenon (现象) than we previously knew.

According to a recent study published by a group of scientists from several German universities, a group of chemicals called endocannabinoids (内源性大麻素) may actually be responsible for this familiar great feeling.

To test this theory, the scientists turned to mice. Both mice and humans release high levels of endorphins and endocannabinoids after exercise, along with many other chemicals. After exercising on running wheels, the mice seemed happy and relaxed and displayed no signs of anxiety. But after being given a drug to block their endorphins, the mice’s behavior didn't seem to change. However, when their endocannabinoids were blocked with a different drug, their runner's high symptoms (症状) seemed to fade.

“The long-held notion of endorphins being responsible for the runner’s high is false. Endorphins are effective pain relievers, but only when it comes to the pain in your body and muscles you feel after working out,” Patrick Lucas Austin wrote on science blog Lifehacker.

Similar studies are yet to be carried out on humans, but it’s already well known that exercise is a highly effective way to get rid of stress or anxiety. The UK's National Health Service even prescribe (开药方) exercise to patients who are suffering from depression. “Being depressed can leave you feeling low in energy, which might put you off being more active. Regular exercise can boost your mood if you have depression, and it’s especially useful for people with mild to moderate depression,” it wrote on its website.

It seems like nothing can beat that feeling we get after a good workout, even if we don’t fully understand where it comes from. At least if we're feeling down, we know that all we have to do is put on our running shoes.

1. What did scientists from Germany universities recently discover?
A.Endorphins may contribute to one’s high spirits after running.
B.The runners’ high could be caused by endocannabinoids.
C.The level of endorphins and endocannabinoids could affect one's mood.
D.Working out is a highly effective way to treat depression.
2. Why did scientists give mice drugs in their experiment?
A.To test what influences the level of endocannabinoids released.
B.To see the specific symptoms of the runner's high.
C.To identify what is responsible for the runner’s high.
D.To find what reduces the runner's high symptoms.
3. What does the underlined word “notion” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A.belief.B.activity.C.effect.D.question.
4. What can we learn according to the UK’s National Health Service?
A.Workouts can help people completely recover from depression.
B.Workouts are the best way to treat depression.
C.Workouts only work for those with depression.
D.Workouts can help ease depression symptoms.

10 . 短文改错

On August 21, I was working my homework, a composition titling “My Hero/Heroine". I got stuck in the very beginning, trying to figure out what would be my hero/heroine.

Attracted by the cheers from the living room, I opened the door only to find my parents were watching the volleyball matches of women's final. Then I decided to take the break and joined in them. The sense of nervousness was overwhelming as the score was quite closely between China and its opponent.

To our delight, China won in the end. We couldn't help feel proud as Chinese! The volleyball players had trained so hard before and fight till the last minute. Without doubt, they were not only my heroines, and the heroines of China! I started to write my composition.
