How Much Is an Olympic Gold Medal Worth?

If the International Olympic Committee still gave solid gold medals to first place finishers, medals would be pretty     1     (value). But after the 1912 Games, they made the switch to silver medals coated in gold.

Chinese teenager Quan Hongchan won the gold medal for the women’s 10-meter platform diving at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Thursday.

Not only is Quan the youngest     1     (compete) in the women’s diving field, but also she’s the youngest of 431 athletes     2     China sent to Tokyo for the Olympics. If the Games had gone on as     3     (schedule) last summer, she would have been too young     4     (meet) the minimum age (14) to compete in the diving competition. Now, she’s made Olympic history.

Each of Quan’s dives was the highest of the five rounds of competition at the 10-meter platform. Two scored perfect 10s from all seven     5     (judge). Only one judge found a flaw (瑕疵) with her final dive,     6     (award) her a 9.5 next to six 10s. But it didn’t count, thanks to diving’s scoring system. The two highest and two     7     (low) scores are thrown out and multiplied(相乘) by the dive’s degree of difficulty. That means only the three middle 10s counted on her final dive and added up 96 when multiplied by the 3.2 degree of difficulty.

He made the unrealistic his reality.     2     Last fall, he became the first person with Down syndrome to complete an Ironman triathlon — a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run.

Chris Nikic is not just an Ironman — he’s a superhero. “Since the race, we have received thousands and thousands of messages from people around the world who are inspired by his journey.     3     They have kids with special needs or Down syndrome. And so it’s touched Chris and touched us quite a lot.” said Chris’ father, Nik Nikic.

“    4     Because he lets them use him as a mirror to look inwardly and say, ‘Look, if he can do so much with so little, what can I do with what I’ve got?’ It’s not about him — it’s about how he makes other people feel about themselves,” Nik Nikic said.

Chris Nikic’s story spread among the staff at Special Olympic Missouri. As explained by Brian Neuner, chief development and marketing officer, “    5     And so, this was just an amazing example of where his ability was realized, even though he has a disability. We really focus on programs that are designed for helping people move forward and advance. Progress can be measured in so many different ways. Obviously, an Ironman, that’s an extreme achievement.”

Chinese shooter Yang Qian won the first gold of the Tokyo Olympic Games on Saturday,     1     (attain) a last-shot victory against Russia's rival, Anastasia Galashina, in the women's 10m air rifle final.

Yang carried off the gold medal with     2     Olympic record score of 251.8, edging ahead of Russian opponent on 251.1 and Switzerland's Nina Christen on 230.6. Galashina     3     (look) calm to claim gold before the last shot, but lost it with 8.9 on her final effort to allow Yang to seal victory     4     (success).
