文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。运动是一种身体、心理和社交的冒险。这是孩子们休息一下,释放额外能量的好方法。这也有助于他们过上更充实、更幸福的生活。本文主要介绍了运动对身心的好处。

1 . Benefits of Sports

Doing sports is a physical, mental and social adventure. It’s a great way for children to take a break from studies and release extra energy. It also helps them lead fuller and happier lives as regular sports have proven beneficial to overall well-being.

The physical benefits of doing sports are probably the most obvious. Regardless of your fitness level when you start playing sports, you’ll notice an increase in your overall fitness once you’re involved.     1     Basketball players focus on strength training; football players work on speed while track athletes train through longer runs. The training process helps promote physical fitness and performances in competitions.

2     Playing sports also contributes to mental health, helping to increase confidence and self-worth. A pat on the back, a high five from a teammate, or a handshake after a match really boosts a child’s confidence. Words of praise and encouragement from the coach, parents and other players raise self-worth.     3     So after a game, it’s a better idea to ask “Did you enjoy the game?” rather than “Did you win?”

Children who participate in sports might also benefit from the social aspect, feeling part of a group, building up responsibility and leadership.     4     Teamwork involves both being dependable as a teammate and learning to rely on your teammates to achieve a positive outcome. Teamwork breeds responsibility and challenges you to be responsible for your actions. Being part of a team gives you an opportunity to be a leader.

Discipline is another social advantage. Most organized sports require a strict training and practice schedule. As a student-athlete, you need to balance studies and athletics.     5

There is no shortage of reasons to find a sport to get involved in. Are you ready to go? Pick one and get moving!

A.It’s not just your body that benefits from sports.
B.Therefore, playing sports is going to make you more fit.
C.But remember, a child’s self-worth should not be distinguished by victory or loss.
D.If you play group sports, you’ll be part of a team that takes direction from a coach.
E.Nearly every sport requires physical activities and the competitive skills.
F.Among these, learning how to function as part of a team is the most important advantage.
G.Only with strict discipline can you be successful both in the classroom and in the sports field.

2 . Exercising regularly not only helps you keep slim, but also improves your overall health and well-being. Different exercises produce different results, as they focus on alternate parts of the body. There are four broad exercise categories: endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance. Many people often only focus on one exercise type, but including all four in your workout will produce better results and reduce your risk of injury.

Endurance

Endurance exercises increase your breathing and heart rate. By doing endurance exercises, you are working to keep your heart, lungs, and blood-flow system healthy while improving your total fitness. Over time these activities will make everyday activities seem easier.

Strength

If you want to build up your muscles, then strength exercises, which are also known as “resistance training”, are right for you. Even the slightest increase in strength can make a huge difference in your ability to carry out daily tasks. Developing strong muscles also reduce your risk of weak bones.

Flexibility

Flexibility exercises help stretch your body’s muscles. This allows for more freedom of movement for other exercises and can also improve your range of motion, posture, ability to breathe deeply, and blood flow. Also, it reduces the muscle tension caused by stress.

Balance

Balance exercises help prevent falls and are especially important to older adults, helping them stay independent. Most good balance exercises are ones that keep you constantly moving with your feet on the ground. Heel-to-toe walking and standing on one foot are simple ways to improve balance.

1. How can a person benefit most from their exercise routine?
A.By combining different exercise types together.
B.By having enough rest between their workouts.
C.By concentrating on one training aspect at a time.
D.By increasing the frequency of their training gradually.
2. Which exercise types are most useful to improve a person’s breathing function?
A.Strength and Balance.B.Flexibility and Balance.
C.Endurance and Strength.D.Endurance and Flexibility.
3. Which part of the body plays the most important role in balance-related exercises?
A.Arms.B.Legs.C.Waist.D.Neck.

3 . Don’t Be Afraid to Quit. It Could Help You Win.

The marathoner Molly Seidel has always been a respectable athlete, but her path to the Olympic medal was not smooth.    1

Treatment changed everything.    2    She was the third American woman in history to win an Olympic medal in the marathon.

In a world that rewards constant toughness, Seidel’s breakthrough was a case study in the value of patience and self care. Despite the general wisdom that the career of a professional athlete should be unbroken upward to peak performance, Seidel stepped away to recover, and came back stronger.

3    And it’s one far beyond any athletic field. Americans often reject quitting, and stress “determination”—a quality that a lot of books have urged parents to put on children over the last decade.

Seidel’s coach, Jon Green, says she does better in races when she’s not pushed to extremes in practice. “    4    Absolutely she does,” Mr. Green told me. “But at the end of the day we approach everything with balance.    5

A.She became a better athlete than ever.
B.Does Molly have determination?
C.When she crossed the finish line, she screamed with joy.
D.Seidel thinks that quitting shouldn’t be seen as giving up.
E.It’s a powerful lesson in how to handle the natural derailments(脱轨) of life.
F.We make sure we're taking care of Molly as a person, not just Molly the runner.
G.She quit the 2016 U. S. Olympic trials to check into treatment for depression, and disordered eating.

5 . The Olympics and COVID-19 were never going to coexist. The basic rule when it comes to controlling an infectious disease is to limit the contact people have with one another. Yet the very essence of the two weeks of competition, which begin on July 23 in Tokyo, is to invite the world to meet, greet and engage in friendly — and often socially not so distant — contests.

An estimated 70,000 athletes, coaches, staff, officials and media will be marching in Tokyo from July to August for the Olympics — at a time when infections in the city are rising again. On July 8, the government declared a fourth COVID-19 state of emergency in Tokyo, which will extend through the end of the Games.

New cases of COVID-19 emerging from any of the Olympic visitors could not only disrupt(扰乱) the Games but also forever fade this year’s Olympics as an exercise in a global pandemic that has claimed the lives of 4 million people.

Olympic organizers are working desperately to prevent that from happening. After consulting with infectious-disease experts, Tokyo 2020 officials have created guidelines for everyone who will be traveling to Japan for the Olympics. Many of the measures are familiar: frequent testing, mask orders and social-distancing procedures.

The strategy is also realistic. While it might not be possible to prevent the virus from entering secretly the Olympic community, the countermeasures are meant to contain it as much as possible. Infections will happen. The challenge lies in minimizing the risk of those infections and the impact they might have—on not just the Games but also the Japanese public and, ultimately, the world at large when Olympic delegations return home.

1. What is the basic principle of controlling an epidemic?
A.To prevent people from communicating with each other.
B.To keep people from participating in activities.
C.To stop people from chatting online.
D.To limit the contact people have with each other.
2. What does the underlined word “that” refer to?
A.The possible threat brought by new cases of COVID-19.
B.The spreading of virus caused by new cases of COVID-19.
C.The treatment of new cases of COVID-19.
D.The decrease of new cases of COVID-19.
3. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the measures for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games?
A.Skeptical.B.Objective.
C.Conservative.D.Negative.
4. From which is the text probably taken?
A.A news magazine.B.A biology textbook.
C.A research paper.D.A travel brochure.

6 . Kite surfing is a sport that takes place on the surface of the water, on top of boards that are similar in design to wakeboards (尾波滑水板), with the surfer pulled by a kite. The popularity of kite surfing has grown, although it is rather difficult to master. Kite surfing uses the same equipment as kite boarding, but is generally given more to riding on top of waves, rather than on smaller lakes or other calm bodies of water.

Early experiments in kite transportation took place through the 19th century, and at the dawn of the 20th century Samuel Cody crossed the English Channel using kites and a small boat. Kite surfing itself, however, wasn’t really born until the late 1970s. Beginning in that decade, more people became involved in using kites for personal transport and sport. Kite technology itself advanced enormously during the 1970s, with kites becoming much more controllable.

The early kite surfing was rather accidental, but innovators continued to develop the technology to make it easier to control and safer. By the late 1990s, kite surfing was becoming popular off the coast of Maui, France and throughout the world. In 1997, a special kite system was built specifically for kite surfing, which helped kite surfing into the mainstream.

Because of the high speeds and the dangers, it is generally recommended that would-be kite surfers take at least a few basic classes to learn the fundamentals. The main attraction of kite surfing is the potential for amazing tricks. The kite allows the surfer to experience enormous jumps, flying through the air for large distances before hitting the water in a controlled fashion. Like skateboarding, kite surfing makes use of a number of board grabs, with complex tricks possible due to the long period of time the surfer can remain in the air.

1. What does the author mainly intend to tell us in Paragraph 1?
A.What is kite surfing.B.Where to go kite surfing.
C.How to enjoy kite surfing.D.Why people like kite surfing.
2. In the 19th century, people intended to use kite for ________.
A.sportB.experiment
C.entertainmentD.transportation
3. What can we know from the third paragraph?
A.Kite surfing often leads to accidents.
B.Maui is home to kite surfing.
C.Kite control is the key to kite surfing.
D.Kite surfing came into being in the 1990s.
4. What is most charming for people surfing?
A.Its potential for tricks.B.Its long time in the air.
C.Its speed across the water.D.Its big distance over the water.

9 . Clocking 16 hours, 46 minutes, nine seconds, the athlete Chris Nikic didn’t finish with the shortest time when he recently completed his first Iron Man Race, but he did quite well.

After swimming 2.4 miles, the 21-year-old Floridian cycled 112 miles. Even after suffering a fall from his bike during the second leg of the race, he called on his inner strength to get back up, keep going and get the job done. And then he ran a 26.2-mile marathon to become the first competitor with Down’s Syndrome (唐氏综合征) in the world to successfully cross the finish line in the history of the Iron Man Race. For his efforts, Nikic also earned himself a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

“To Nikic, this race was more than just a finish line and a celebration for the success,” his dad said. The race has served as a chance to become one step closer to his goal of living a normal life. It’s about being an example to other kids and families that face similar difficulties. Those with Down’s Syndrome will be prompted to live a life like normal persons.

Nikic trained between four and six hours a day to prepare for the event, and that training paid off.

Goal set and achieved, Nikic posted on Instagram, where he has 33,000 new followers. “Time to set a new and bigger goal for 2021.”

One of Nikic’s biggest fans, all-time tennis great Billie Jean King, tweeted the perfect response: “No limits. No boundaries. Keep dreaming big and going for it!”

As for that medal he won for completing the race, he gifted it to his loving mom. With hope of competing in the 2022 Special Olympics scheduled in Orlando, it looks as if Chris Nikic has plenty of big dreams yet to come true.

1. What did Nikic’s performance during Iron Man Race prove?
A.He is strong.B.He is confident.C.He is kind.D.He is careful.
2. What does the underlined word “prompted” in Paragraph 3 mean?

3. Why did Billie Jean King write those words?

One of the big reasons why people drop an exercise program are lack of interest. If that you’re doing isn’t fun, it’s hard to keep it up. When pick the right type of exercise, consider our workout personality. For an example, do you like to work out alone? If so, solo sports like running or biking could be for you. Or do you like the sharing motivation and companionship that comes for being part of a team? Then school sports and club teams are great ways to stay actively with others.

Do remember the great thing is that it’s never too late start.
