文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。介绍了大众传媒的特点。

3 . Mass communication is a very broad field which includes advertising, mass promotion, political campaigns, public relations, mass education and even the way you interact with other people. It covers just about everything you do in your daily life. Some characteristics of mass communication are: communication, information overload, group effort and feedback. There are some more that are less often mentioned but are just as important as the ones that have been listed above.

The most basic feature of communication is interaction. Interaction takes the form of communication where you can interpret what someone is trying to say. For example, when a person says “How are you?” and you respond in a loud voice or in a concerned manner, it’s considered interaction.

Another characteristic of mass communication that you’ll come across is a large number of receivers. When communicating with a group of people, it is important to keep in mind that each receiver will bring different characteristics to the table when communicating. Different receivers will take up different topics and bring a different set of characteristics to the table. In some cases, you will need to communicate with many different types of receiver in order for your communication ideas to be fully expressed and taken into full effect. You should therefore consider the characteristics of your receivers when planning your communication strategies.

New media is also impacting communication. Each type of new medium has diverse different ways in which it can deliver messages. You can make use of several types of communication in many cases and reach a wide range of target audiences. For example, you can use the Internet in order to communicate with your audience. As a result, the amount of information also in turn becomes too much for the human mind to process in a timely and effective manner. This overload is not only unsound, but it also tends to make people impatient, which finally takes the form of arguments and other types of exchanges that are based on facts, assumptions or personal experiences. However, although you may have to deal with some constraints, the Internet is still a very powerful tool that should not be ignored.

1. What role does the example given by the author in the second paragraph play?
A.Explain the importance of politeness.
B.Explain the concept of interaction.
C.Explain the characteristics of communication.
D.Explain what body language is.
2. Why should we consider different receivers when planning communication?
A.Because communicators have many different characteristics on the dinner table.
B.So that your ideas can be accurately expressed and play a role.
C.In order to better improve your communication strategy.
D.Because the receivers have different views on different topics.
3. Why does communication often take the form of argument?
A.Because there are too many types of communication.
B.Because people have different experiences.
C.Because the new media is not perfect.
D.Because overloaded information is boring.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards mass communication?
A.Uncaring.B.Indifferent.
C.Objective.D.Subjective.

9 . As technology makes communication easier and quicker, handwritten letters are nearly a thing of the past.

But it is making a comeback on Feng Shengji’s desk. The 34-year-old from Chengdu started an online letter-writing business in February last year, writing and mailing hundreds of letters on behalf of others. She has written letters of appreciation, apologies for wrongdoings, love letters and breakup letters. Her story has spread on social media, triggering wide discussion on the lost art of letter writing. It has been viewed more than 14 million times on Sina Weibo.

The idea of writing letters for others came when Feng tried to draw and write on her iPad to beat boredom during COVID-19. Then, she opened an online store for letter writing. Up till last month, she worked for a local design company in the day, and worked on her online business as a letter writer at night.

In mid-March last year, a doctor from Sichuan became her first client. He was assigned to help fight COVID-19 in Wuhan during the 76-day lockdown. The doctor contacted Feng to help him write thank-you letters to the Wuhan Red Cross Hospital and the hotel he stayed in for their care and support during his time in Wuhan. As mailing services were stopped during the lockdown, Feng wrote the letters on her iPad and emailed the letters. “I told him that I wanted to write the letters free of charge, but he insisted on paying.” Feng recounts.

Since then, her business has taken off. As of January, she has written more than 700 letters , with each letter ranging from dozens of words to thousands. Depending on the length of the letters, each letter can cost from dozens of yuan to less than 100 yuan.

10 . Magazine sales have generally been falling since the day the inventor of the Internet said, “Hey, why don’t I invent the Internet?”

But the latest ABC figures, released this week, show that sales of certain titles are actually going up. News and current affairs magazines are becoming more popular—but celebrity (名人), gossip and fashion publications are still struggling.

“Gossip and celebrity news is rarely something that requires detailed analysis—so it’s best suited to bite-sized content on social media,” says Ian Burrell, media columnist for The Drum. “Once it’s out there, it’s quickly shared and readers move on to the next star. No one wants to wait a week to read about it in a print magazine.”

Fraser Nelson, editor of The Spectator, wrote this week: “There’s now too much writing online, and in an era of fake news, where you get your analysis from has never been more important. As newspapers and magazines are finding out, if you can publish writing that is consistently better than what can be found online, people will pay.”

But many editors are struggling to strike the right balance between physical and digital content. They are faced with the choice of either posting all their articles online for free so the magazine stays relevant, or charging readers money to protect the financial future of the brand.

As Burrell points out, most readers are hungry for a deeper understanding of the fast-moving changes in global news and politics rather than seeking to escape from it by burying their heads in celebrity gossip and entertainment stories.

Serious times call for serious journalism. While general-interest daily news has been turned into an almost universally available commodity (商品) by the Internet, specialist journalism is still a service people value and think they can’t get elsewhere.

1. What does Ian Burrell think of celebrity news?
A.It should be read carefully.B.It should appear on magazines.
C.It isn’t worth reading.D.It isn’t worth analyzing.
2. What did Fraser Nelson mainly stress?
A.The value of newspapers and magazines.
B.The significance of current affairs.
C.The importance of news sources.
D.The balance between physical and digital content.
3. What can be inferred from Burrell’s opinion in Paragraph 6?
A.Most readers are fond of rapid changes.
B.Most readers tend to escape from reality.
C.Most readers like entertainment news best.
D.Most readers show great interest in global news and politics.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.What Makes Some Magazines Disappear
B.Where Magazines Will Go in the Future
C.How Magazines Are Surviving the Digital Age
D.Why People Are Still Reading Fashion Publications
