6 . Public libraries are an excellent resource for research, literacy (读写能力) education, and reading-centered events. Most towns have one or share library services with other towns through a mobile library, and the use of a public library is free to people who are willing to apply for a library card.
There are several primary sources of library funding, starting with national funds which are distributed to states or provinces. These regions send the funds on to public libraries. Local governments also play an important role in providing funding for libraries, and most librarians apply for grants (拨款). Finally, private donations help to maintain libraries — most libraries have an association of Friends of the Library which organizes fund-raising sales and pays annual dues to help maintain the library.
Grants and private donations can also be used to provide a large amount of funding for public libraries, and some large libraries maintain a separate staff member to increase the amount of funding that they can obtain through these sources. Grants include technology grants which allow libraries to install and upgrade computer systems, grants which focus on a particular topic such as science, fiction, children’s books, or local history, and education grants which support locally-based community efforts such as after-school reading programs. Many private donors are pleased to support their local public libraries by donating funds or including some library in their wills, and libraries reward their donors with treats like after-hours visits or privileged access to special collections.
By combining multiple resources, creative librarians can keep their libraries useful, informative, and fun for browsers. When it comes to supporting public libraries, every little bit counts: if you cannot afford to donate to a local library, think about volunteering time to help shelve books, lead after-school programs, or organize fund-raisers. Being active with your public library is a very important way to contribute to your local community.

7 . New York City is a place full of surprises for many first—time visitors. Americans and foreigners alike experience a kind of culture shock when they first arrive. It is one of the most respected centers of higher education in the United States. Many young people like to live and work in America’s largest city. But if you do not know where to start, it helps to belong to a community.
The city has a place where students have a chance to meet and find their place in the world. It is a private, non—profit center called International House, which serves students from more than 100 countries.
Adjibola Amzat, who is from Nigeria, lives there. “Without the International House, New York would have been a very, very lonely place for many people,” he says. Amzat worked as a news reporter. He left his job to study at Columbia University. He registered for a graduate degree program in journalism. Amzat likes International House. He thinks it has helped to improve his experience at Columbia University.
International House welcomes graduate students from many universities. They have a chance to attend many cultural celebrations throughout the year. The students say their interaction with each other has led to new friendships and personal growth.
Akmyrat Tuyliyev is from Turkmenistan. He says he finds people from so many areas at International House. This, he says, makes him want to work to change the world. “I’d never seen a black person until I came to the United States. So seeing students from Russia, students from China, and all of these other countries, coming here to unite, is really inspiring.”
Many of the 700 people who live at International House say they want to continue the relationships they have begun when they return home.

8 . The Walt Disney Company wasn’t about to let COVID-19 stop the company from developing. In the past year, some Disney theme park innovation (革新) have been designed.
For example, Disney had always encouraged face-to-face interactions between cast members and customers. It made perfect sense since Disney spends so much time training its workers in providing good customer service. In fact, Disney is known for pleasing its guests, which explains why it scores so high in customer satisfaction surveys. Well, COVID-19 turned personal interactions into problematic exchanges, as they increased the risk of spreading COVID-19. So, quickly, Disney added cast member virtual chat to its app My Disney Experience. Now, you can rely on a cast member’s knowledge whenever you have a question about Disney visit. It's like having a tour guide on your phone!
There is also the Walk-Up Waitlist. Before 2020, Disney had made strict rules for its Table Service restaurants. Once something sold out, would-be diners had no means of booking a table. COVID-19 has affected park guests, though. Some of them booked tables but then decided not to eat there. This cost Disney money, and it prevented you from dining at your favorite places. So, restaurant managers felt unhappy about the poor business practice, and Disney’s IT department reached a solution. The Walk-Up Waitlist in My Disney Experience allows you to add your name at a restaurant. A previously booked restaurant will find a table for you to dine there. My Disney Experience shows the waiting time. You’ll know whether the wait will fit with your tour. For Disney, the Walk-Up Waitlist improves services and can make it earn more money while increasing customer satisfaction.
In the face of COVID-19, Disney somehow made its parks better and more modern. The company is really worth praising for such great innovations.

9 . Identify the best charities
There are so many ways to support the creatures that share this planet with us, and one of the simplest ways is to donate to charities.
We have done a roundup of some top organizations. These charities are committed to the only purpose of making our natural world a better place, and to supporting the animals that live within it.
Defenders of Wildlife
Defenders of Wildlife works tirelessly both on the ground and in the courts to protect and restore wildlife. Their work primarily focuses on North America, although it does have a fantastic worldwide reach. They work at a policy level to ensure that endangered animals are protected, but also offer practical advice to people who have to live alongside bears!
Jane Goodall Foundation
In 1960, Jane Goodall ventured into the forests of Africa to be able to see wild animals living without human disturbance. This decision led to the foundation of the Jane Goodall Foundation, and paved the way for some of the most illuminating research into chimpanzees which are at risk of extinction. The research continues to this day, focusing on the state of the forest and the chimpanzee populations which is shared with governments and other protection agencies.
David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is one of the most successful orphaned elephant rescue and rehabilitation projects in the world. Dr Dame Daphne Sheldrick started the organization in 1977 in memory of her late husband, the famous naturalist David Sheldrick. The organization focuses on anti-poaching and endangered species conservation, as well as rescuing and hand rearing elephant and rhino orphans.
World Wildlife Fund
The WWF is probably the best known of all the organizations. Its mission is to conserve nature and reduce the most pressing threats to biodiversity. The scope of their work is huge, covering oceans, forests, wildlife, fresh water, climate and food. They support some of the most endangered animals today – giant pandas, tigers, elephants, gorillas, sea turtles, polar bears, rhinos and whales.

10 . Bamboo, the fast-growing grass plant common to Africa, Asia and Latin America, has been used for thousands of years to build houses, bridges, and scaffolding(脚手架).
In recent years, concerns about the unsustainability of building materials have caused a fresh look at “natural”construction. Research by the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization, INBAR, shows that bamboo can provide a low-carbon, renewable alternative to timber, steel and cement.
Since 2015, Bamboo U has welcomed more than 400 people through its doors.
